As everyone knew ahead of time, Coldplay did not perform the Super Bowl Half-time show alone. Beyonce and Bruno Mars joined the Coldplay guys, only I think most people were way more excited for Bey and Bruno than they ever were for Coldplay. Which is the point: why did the NFL ever choose Coldplay in the first place? Anyway, Beyonce dropped her first single in a year ahead of the Super Bowl and that’s what she performed – “Formation.” Bruno did his big hit of 2015, “Uptown Funk,” with a great cameo by Mark Ronson. Coldplay didn’t even have time to do a proper medley of their greatest hits, which is kind of funny. They did a few lines of “Yellow,” some short versions of “Vida la Vida,” “Paradise” and “Fix You.”

I know I’ve given Chris Martin and Coldplay a lot of crap, but I don’t think they went out there and embarrassed themselves. Sort of. I think they sort of misjudged the Halftime show though – it’s supposed to be epic, it’s supposed to involve dancing and visual craziness, and they just seemed to think it was going to be another stadium show. And does it make a difference if I say that I was not alone in being somewhat disappointed? Almost all of the professional critics were like “Thank God for Beyonce and Bruno, they saved what could have been a tepid Halftime show.” A word about Bruno: what a pro. What an entertainer. What a cutie. I love him.

A word about Beyonce’s performance of “Formation”… good choice. Great choice for a moment like the Halftime show. She really brought it. And NO SHE DID NOT FALL. She just sort of lost her footing for a split second.

Also: Jay-Z apparently sent Beyonce 10,000 roses ahead of her performance. She earned it. And she’ll take him to Red Lobster tonight.

PS… Chris Martin’s ex-wife and Beyonce’s BFF Gwyneth Paltrow was at the game, and she seemed to be watching Blue Ivy Carter. Goop Instagramed this:
