My first thought when I looked through these photos of the Duchess of Cambridge? “She’s channeling Angelina Jolie.” That was my gut reaction and the Jolie vibe has dissipated a bit since I looked at all of the photos, but this isn’t even the first time that some people have wondered if Kate is taking her style cues from La Jolie. The gut-level similarities might simply be because Kate’s gown in these photos is Jenny Packham, one of her go-to designers… the same Jenny Packham whose gowns Angelina has worn several times as well.
Anyway, these are photos of the Cambridges at last night’s big royal premiere of Spectre, the new James Bond film. I’ll be covering the actors in another post. Unfortunately, there aren’t many photos of Prince Harry, who was also there. He walked behind William and Kate on the red carpet, and the photographers were mostly concerned with getting glamour shots of Kate.
As for her look beyond the Jolie vibes, I’m okay with it. I’m not in love with it, but it’s not terrible. I’m grateful it’s not a mullet dress, a minidress or a gown with a biscuit-grazing slit. I enjoy a good sleeve and this gown has great sleeves. The color – a pale blue, with sort of a grey-lilac tint in some photos – is good but not great on Kate. She loves pale colors when really she should wear brighter colors more often. I’m thankful it’s not lace and I like the sheer back revealing the fact that she’s going braless. Scandalous!
For me, the worst parts of this look are the cheap-looking sparkly belt and the hair. I know, I know, I’m a broken record with my bitching and moaning about her hair. She deserves praise (like, positive reinforcement for a child) for wearing her hair back, but I feel like her hair person f—ked up what could have been a really elegant up-do. I don’t get the “bump” above the bun.
What else? Great earrings! Truly. Oh, and if you look closely, you’ll see why she chose this dress in particular: BUTTONS. The buttons on the cuff/sleeve. All hail the Duchess of Buttons!
