Yesterday, we discussed the offensive, misguided, ridiculous and stupid Pepsi commercial starring the one and only Kendall Jenner. The whole concept of the ad was pretty stupid: Kendall plays a ditzy model who sees protesters marching past her modeling shoot, she decides to take off her wig and saunter around the protesters and then she hands a Pepsi to a cop. Here’s the ad once again:

Obviously, people were like “this is some white nonsense.” For about 24 hours, Pepsi stuck with their decision and stood by the commercial, claiming that: “This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.” Turns out, not so much. Pepsi pulled the ad off YouTube after a day and issued an apology:

Pepsi has pulled an ad featuring Kendall Jenner a day after it debuted. The ad, which depicted the model joining a march and handing a can of Pepsi to a police officer, incited the wrath of the Twitterverse, with critics calling it tone-deaf and disrespectful to movements like #BlackLivesMatter. The beverage maker issued this statement on Tuesday morning, apologizing for the ad, which has been pulled from YouTube.

“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace, and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”

Yeah, they missed the mark. Big time. What I don’t understand is the hunker-down mentality of the first 24 hours after the commercial debuted. Did Pepsi’s advertising team sit around, reading Twitter and the overwhelmingly awful reviews of the commercial and think, “Eh, whatever”?

Meanwhile, People Magazine had a story in which Kendall Jenner was making this all about Kendall. A source told People that: “Kendall would have been absolutely mortified. Anything offensive is just not her. She means well, always. She would have called Kris SO upset and freaking out. And then Kris would go into mom mode and approach it like, ‘Let’s do something about this, NOW.’” So I guess Lucifer’s Homegirl called up Pepsi and was like “YOU NEED TO APOLOGIZE TO KENDALL!” And so that’s what Pepsi did? Ugh.
