Rosamund Pike has started to impress me with the sheer fact that she’s an utter style omnivore. She has not repeated a designer at any major event during the awards season, and she’s sprinkled in designers from America, Britain, Italy and France. At last night’s BAFTAs, she went with a simple Roland Mouret gown in black. While the gown isn’t “Look at me, look at me!!” I still like it. Mostly because it’s the prettiest and most flattering thing she’s worn in months.
Dame Kristin Scott Thomas (yes, she’s a Dame now!) wore this vintage 1948 Balmain haute couture gown. I mean, it’s a beautiful dress. And I love that she wore honest-to-God vintage. But this black dress doesn’t stand out at all.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Prada. This is the unfortunate “signature” of Prada gowns, and how I knew this was a Prada gown before I even saw the ID: terrible, horrible, borderline obscene darting on the bust. Remember Anne Hathaway’s Prada gown at the Oscars a few years ago? And all anyone could talk about was her #DartFail? Yeah. That happened with poor Gugu in this dress too. If Prada could design a dress bust worth a damn, this would actually be one of my favorite looks of the night.
Here’s Sam Claflin and his wife Laura Haddock. She’s wearing a princessy Ashi Couture gown. People on Twitter loved it, but I found it underwhelming. I’m sure I would have loved it on Lupita, but Lupita would have worn it differently, you know?
