The VMAs are on Sunday. It will be the one-year anniversary of Taylor Swift and Kanye West publicly burying their hatchet when she presented him with the MTV Video Vanguard Award. Think back to that night… Kanye actually felt remorse when he went up there and embraced Taylor. You could see it on his face and hear it in his voice. He was happy they made peace after all those years. Even though he thrives on controversy, he was glad that this controversy had been put to bed. Months later, everything blew up again. The song was “Famous” and Taylor insisted she had never been told about the lyrics, nor had she approved of anything on Kanye’s album. Kanye told everybody that Taylor had given her approval, and no one believed him (well, I believed him, and I felt like I was the only one). Months passed. Kim Kardashian dropped the receipts on Taylor’s verbal consent for the song. The backlash was immediate. Taylor became the Snake Emoji, overexposed, disbelieved and untrusted.

Now here we are. Kanye racked up several VMA nominations for The Life of Pablo, and Taylor didn’t get nominated for anything. Taylor tried to play it like she’s didn’t submit her three eligible videos for nomination, but considering she was exposed as a liar this year, can we really believe that? Isn’t it just as possible that MTV decided that they didn’t want Tay-Tay and the squad at the VMAs this year? That MTV decided to Mean Girl the Mean Girl? Taylor doesn’t want you to believe that. She wants you to believe that all of this is her choice. That she’s not attending this year because she doesn’t want to.

Don’t expect any seat-dancing from Taylor Swift at this weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards – the pop star won’t be in attendance. Although the singer is currently spending time in New York City, Swift will not be in the crowd when the VMAs return to the Big Apple, a source close to the VMAs and Swift exclusively confirms to PEOPLE.

“Taylor was never scheduled to attend the VMAs,” says the insider. Swift, whose last album dropped in November 2014, was not nominated for any awards this time around.

Taylor to MTV: I don’t care enough about the VMAs to attend. MTV to Taylor: You weren’t invited anyway, sweetheart. But it is nice to see some kind of confirmation that Taylor isn’t going to force the issue and roll up with the Snake Emoji Squad just for the hell of it. Because it would totally get awkward. Kim Kardashian is scheduled to attend with Kanye, and Kim is going to present as well. As for Kanye…

Kanye West will have free reign over the stage at this weekend’s MTV VMAs and show producers are expecting something big … they just have no idea WHAT it will be. A source close to production tells us MTV honchos are giving ‘Ye 4 minutes to do with as he pleases. He can rap, sing, dance or even just stay silent … and we’re told show producers are totally clueless which door he’ll pick.

You’ll remember … Kanye won last year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the show and took the stage for an 11 minute sermon that included talk of a presidential run in 2020. There have been rumors he and Taylor Swift might make nice during Sunday’s show … but sources close to Swift say she has no plans to attend.

I do wonder if Kanye would ever try to re-bury the hatchet with Taylor Swift. Like, is he totally over it at this point and even if MTV was like, “We’d really love to reunite you and Taylor on stage,” Kanye would decline? I think he would decline. Kim made sure of that – Kim didn’t start the war, but she surely ended it. And there’s no going back. As for Kanye’s gift of four minutes… God knows. I bet he will perform, but who even knows?
