Even though the cameras weren’t rolling on her reality show, Kelly Bensimon was the star of a personal drama on Tuesday. The Real Housewives of New York player reported to a Big Apple courthouse to face a misdemeanor assault charge after she allegedly attacked her boyfriend, Nick Stefanov.

Bensimon, 40, was arrested March 5 for punching Stefanov in the face and entered a not guilty plea at the time.

"I’m really upset by the entire process," she told Extra after the Tuesday hearing. "My beautiful girls and I are being exposed to a horrible situation. I just think it just unsettling."

According to police reports, the former model gave her boyfriend a black eye and a gash on his left cheek. He fled the apartment after the altercation. At the time, a friend told PEOPLE that Bensimon was "upset and embarrassed" by the situation.

On Tuesday, her lawyer Ed Hayes told Extra that Stefanov, who did not appear in court, "just wants to make her life uncomfortable."

When asked by Extra if he thinks the situation could be described as a lovers’ quarrel, Hayes said: "I don’t even know if I qualify him as lover. How about a jilted moron?"
