Ava DuVernay’s latest is a Netflix “limited series” (miniseries) called When They See Us. It’s a deep dive into the story of the Central Park Five, the five teenage boys who were wrongly convicted and imprisoned for years for the rape and assault of a white female jogger in New York in 1989. The New York papers and NYPD turned the case into an absolute circus and it remains one of the ugliest moments and biggest travesties of justice of the past fifty years. DuVernay covers the latest issue of Town & Country to promote it – this is actually the “Philanthropy Issue,” and there are multiple covers and cover features. DuVernay’s cover story includes the Central Park Five backstory and interviews with some of the men. Here’s the trailer- this is difficult to watch:

In the T&C interview, DuVernay talks about how she came to direct this and develop it – one of the men contacted her and she met with him, and it went on from there. Some highlights from her interview:

On what she wanted to convey in ‘When They See Us’: “Often when you hear ‘criminal,’ they’re dehumanized. What we try to do in the series is show that these are living, breathing people with thoughts, memories, feelings families.”

On the injustices the exonerated Central Park Five suffered that others don’t: “All of them were picked up off the street that day for just being boys – boys will be boys. Just like Brett Kavanaugh, just like all the white boys or the women reading this magazine who go on spring break and do all kinds of things and are never considered a wolfpack or a gang, never given the full brunt of the criminal justice system. The hope is that people can watch this story and consider the evils of that system. The film is designed to inspire conversation and change.”

On her emotional reaction at the conclusion of filming: “At the end, getting their blessing and approval was one of my biggest career achievements. And I’ve had some pretty good ones.” She says she generally refuses to cry at her own work, “yet when I got to the end of episode four, I cried like a baby. The cumulative emotion broke me down in a way that was unlike anything I’ve done. It was just profoundly moving for me, personally, that these men allowed me to tell their story, and deeply resonant for me as a citizen of this country that this is something we allowed to happen. And it’s not just happening to them, it’s happening to so many people.”

Sometimes the weight of these everyday injustices just makes my heart hurt, like a weight that I can’t even lift. “…Boys will be boys. Just like Brett Kavanaugh, just like all the white boys or the women reading this magazine who go on spring break and do all kinds of things and are never considered a wolfpack or a gang.” It’s true. We see it over and over again – black children are treated as adults, as predators, as gangsters, all while 40-year-old white men committing treason are called “boys” and allowed “youthful mistakes.” I would argue that Brett Kavanaugh’s drunken sexual assault of Christine Blassey Ford was a million times worse than what the Central Park Five children were up to.

The Jonas Brothers have a new documentary called Chasing Happiness. It’s on Amazon Prime right now, and it’s about how they got the boy band back together after several years apart, and how their lives have changed, and it’s also a “making of” their new album. They also talk about purity rings and all of that, but honestly… after all this time, are people still interested in that subject? All three brothers are now married, and they all brought their wives to the premiere event last night.

I don’t have the IDs on any of the ladies’ dresses, but they all looked good and very individual. Priyanka Chopra wore this vampy black gown which seemed over the top, but she looked beautiful. The only negative thing I’ll say – and I know people always hate this, but they would comment with the exact same thing if I didn’t mention it – is that the way the fabric lays across her abdomen is giving me baby-bump vibes. A weird cut on the dress or is a Baby Chopra-Jonas coming?

Sophie Turner looked amazing. Love the too-dark lipstick with the silver dress. It appeals to me as a ‘90s Girl. And Danielle (Kevin’s wife) looked really nice too.

For months now, Richard Madden has been getting pap’d in LA and New York. He’s a good looking guy, he’s famous because of Game of Thrones and Bodyguard, and he won a Golden Globe this year. All of those are good reasons for “why Richard gets pap’d a lot.” But another reason is that for months now, Madden has been seen around with a young guy named Brandon Flynn. Flynn is best known to the casual gossiper as “Sam Smith’s ex-boyfriend.” Brandon and Richard have seemed inseparable for months, and there were even photos of Richard with his arm around Brandon, and his hand holding on to the back of Brandon’s neck. It was hot. Considering that Madden has had a few actress girlfriends before now, people were abuzz with the idea that Richard could be bisexual and “pulling a Kristen Stewart,” which is basically just announcing your sexuality by not hiding your relationships from the paps.

Anyway, Madden was interviewed by the New York Times to promote Rocketman, where he plays John Reid, Elton John’s first manager and lover. In the NYT piece, this happened:

Tabloid interest in his personal life has increased, too: Madden, who was in a relationship with the actress Jenna Coleman until last year, has recently been photographed several times with the actor Brandon Flynn, who used to date the singer Sam Smith. Are the two men an item?

Madden shrugged, unbothered by the question but in no hurry to answer it, either. “I just keep my personal life personal,” he said. “I’ve never talked about my relationships.” He’s working on a way to deter paparazzi interest in who he’s seen with: “I wear the same clothes days in a row, because if it looks like the same day, they can’t run the pictures,” he said. “There’s only so many photos you can have of me with a green juice walking down the street.”

He knows, though, that some actors court that kind of attention. “I’ll be at hotels and restaurants where they’ll tell you, ‘There’s paparazzi in the front, do you want to go out the front or go out the back?’” Madden said. “And you go, ‘Who wants to out the front?’ And they say, ‘Oh, quite a lot of people!’”

“I’ve never talked about my relationships.” A-HA! So he admits he’s in a relationship with Brandon Flynn? Seriously, I have no idea. There’s speculation that the LGBTQ community wants to claim Richard but I think there are some people who worry that Madden is merely “baiting” people to help sell his movie. I don’t know… I’ve seen a lot of those pap stroll photos of Madden and Flynn, and I think they’re happening.
