As we discussed last week, people were worried about Ghost in the Shell. Some box-office predictors claimed that the film could open big, and that it could potentially dethrone Beauty and the Beast. It did not dethrone anything. Ghost in the Shell opened with $19 million, and it’s being called a “disappointing” debut by The Hollywood Reporter. You know it’s a lot more than “disappointing” because THR actually devoted a huge analysis piece to figuring out just what went wrong. You know what went wrong? They hired Scarlett Johansson to play a Japanese character. Bam! Analysis done. I would also say that once the critics went to screenings and the reviews started coming out, people figured out that Scarlett had been lying about the whitewashing of her character for months. Here are some other highlights from THR’s analysis:

Bad reviews: “Ghost in the Shell suffered from tough reviews, an unfamiliarity of North American audiences with the source material, a so-called ‘whitewashing’ controversy that may have had an effect — though it’s almost impossible to quantify that effect empirically — and a very crowded and competitive marketplace that has taken down almost as many films as it has boosted to unprecedented heights,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for ComScore.

The film did better internationally. The movie made $40.1 million overseas, and it hasn’t even opened in Japan and China. So… they’re looking to break even in the foreign markets.

People in Japan never objected to the whitewashing: Sam Yoshiba, director of the international business division of Kodansha, the manga’s publisher, told The Hollywood Reporter, “Looking at her career so far, I think Scarlett Johansson is well cast. She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place.” He added, “This is a chance for a Japanese property to be seen around the world.” Mamoru Oshii, director of the original 1995 Japanese animated film, also endorsed the choice. But Guy Aoki, MANAA founding president, responded, “Many in Japan have been so brainwashed by Western culture that they’ve developed an inferiority complex about their own. They assume that in order for an American film to be successful, it has to star a white actor. Tell that to Zhang Yimou, who spent $150 million directing The Great Wall starring Matt Damon only to see it flop worldwide and receive terrible reviews. He’s not going to make his money back.”

Guy Aoki says more: “What Hollywood needs to understand,” Aoki tells THR, “this is not like when Hollywood announces Michael Keaton is the new Batman or Daniel Craig is the new Bond. There was a big uproar, but the actors were able to turn them around with their approaches to the roles. But you can’t change the ethnicity of an actor, and when a white actor is cast in a role that should have gone to an Asian or Asian-American, it’s not just Asian-Americans who have a vested interest who are upset, but other fair-minded people as well as fans of the original anime. You can’t get away with casting a white actor and think people will eventually warm up. There was a lot of social media talk, after the Super Bowl ad, for example, and a lot of it was negative. People whose first impression was, ‘I love Scarlett Johansson, she kicks ass,’ may have started looking at it and thinking, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t support this.’”

[From THR]

I agree with Guy Aoki 100% – I think studios are stuck in this strange universe where they honestly don’t believe that anyone will see a movie if there’s not a white lead, despite all of this f–king evidence to the contrary. Later in this article, a Paramount person says that Ghost in the Shell was “very Rotten Tomatoes-sensitive. Lots of people were seeking out information about the film. And we got hit pretty hard by the print journalists.” Again, Rotten Tomatoes is not the problem and why are you blaming people for doing a few minutes of research before they spend $30-50 on movie tickets, popcorn, etc?

Kirsten Bell is still dutifully promoting The CHiPs movie her husband Dax Shepard made, even though it’s pretty much DOA. It could break even with international and DVD sales but it doesn’t look likely. Plus it just got skewered by critics and stands at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, which also explains its bad box office – poor word of mouth. It seems like she’s everywhere lately though. I’m only going to cover a couple of her recent interviews because, like many other people, I’m a little burnt out on her and her husband. First off, here’s an interview she did with Bustle where she addressed, in a roundabout way, the criticism she gets in the media. She talked about herself in the third person. I’ve never done this and I can’t remember the last time I heard someone do it in person, but I guess referring to themselves in the third person is a thing for celebrities.

On not caring what people think of her
“You can see me however you want to see me. I try not to look too often to how I’m perceived. I think it messes with your head… my life motto is that I like being an actress, but I love being Kristen.”

On persuading her husband, Dax Shepard, to give her a role in CHiPs
“I was just a d*ck to him at home for awhile. No, I did threaten to do that. But we actually just had a long talk about it, and I said, ‘whatever you decide, I totally get it.’”

On working to ensure that their real-life chemistry didn’t affect the less-than-stellar relationship between their characters
“He made a very good point, which is why he’s a good director — he said, ‘I don’t want anyone even subconsciously to be rooting for us, during this movie.”

[From Bustle]

I understand why famous people try not to focus on how they’re perceived or how they try to separate themselves from their public persona, which is sounds like Kristen is doing. Maybe that’s why she’s calling herself by her own name – that’s someone she keeps separate and private.

Kristen also has a new interview with Parents magazine which was posted on Facebook Live. She’s promoting her relationship with Tide detergent in this case. She talked about telling her children, she has daughters Lincoln, 4, and Delta, 2, with Dax, about race. I don’t know if I get what she’s saying here.

Bell referenced a chapter in the book Nurture Shock, titled, “Why White Parents Don’t Talk About Race.”

“You think, ‘Oh they’re going to see that I have a black friend, and they’ll know it’s OK.’ That’s not the way humans work. We evolved and 200 years ago if we met in a field we would have killed each other if we were from different tribes because the ‘other’ is meant to protect you evolutionarily.”

“Kids will notice differences,” Bell explained. “So we talk to them about it ? like, our best friend is Indian, and we’re always like, ‘Look at this, isn’t this cool? The difference between Monica’s skin and Mommy’s skin? And they’re different colors. Did you know everybody is a different color? We had our first black president’”

She added, “You talk to them about it, so the idea of ‘the other’ is never left alone in their brain.” Bell believes that if parents don’t acknowledge other cultures or the differences between individual human beings, kids may draw their own conclusions based on fear.

“Differences are also important, cultures are important, and it’s important to acknowledge those because if you ignore them, your kids are seeing them, [and] they’re coming to their own conclusions. The topic needs to be open,” she said.

[From Huffington Post, some quotes added]

Her daughters are young so maybe this makes sense in this context but something about this isn’t rubbing me the right way. It’s like they’re pointing out to their kids that people are different and making a big deal about it. She’s so extra though it’s hard to know exactly what she means. Here’s a clue though. Dax once said Kristen had a “fetish” for Indian men as if being attracted to anyone but a white guy was a “fetish.”

IF ONLY, THIS HOMOPHOBIC, REPUBLICAN KNEW……… ????

A post shared by Bianca Del Rio (@thebiancadelrio) on Mar 30, 2017 at 8:56pm PDT

I vaguely remembered writing a few stories about Candace Cameron Bure several years back, but I couldn’t remember exactly what the stories were about. Something about how she’s super-churchy and Republican? As it turns out, I wrote about her when she was discussing how she’s “submissive” to her husband because that’s the way she interprets the Bible. She let’s her husband make all of the decisions, and he gets the last word on everything, you get the idea. She also has a history of being politically conservative and anti-LGBTQ rights. Like, she doesn’t believe gay people should be allowed to marry. And she believes businesses have the right to discriminate against gay people if those businesses are run by people who can use their faith as a shield.

So, funny story. Candace Instagrammed a photo of herself wearing a “Not Today Satan” t-shirt. That’s a quote from Bianca Del Rio, a contestant on and winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Bianca regrammed the IG with this message: “IF ONLY, THIS HOMOPHOBIC, REPUBLICAN KNEW……….” Bianca’s fans then flooded Candace’s IG with comments about how she’s a terrible person, a hypocrite and more. So Candace responded to Bianca:

HER RESPONSE…… ???????? @candacecbure #liveyourlife #lovejesus #republicanpride ?

A post shared by Bianca Del Rio (@thebiancadelrio) on Mar 30, 2017 at 10:21pm PDT

She wrote: “Why do you have to be nasty to me? You don’t know me or my heart. I’m not homophobic and [it’s] always sad when people think otherwise. Loving Jesus doesn’t mean I hate gay people or anyone. You sent a bunch of hateful people to my page writing horrible things. I hope next time you’ll spread love and kindness, even when you disagree with people. Sending you love and wish you all the best. Truly.”

I agree that loving Jesus doesn’t mean that a person is homophobic. It’s Candace’s history of saying homophobic sh-t that makes her homophobic. And the fact that a white, cisgendered, heterosexual woman who spreads her bigoted Republican crap is now telling Bianca to be more tolerant and kind? That’s just icing on top of the hypocrisy cake. That being said, I actually believe that Candace has potential as someone who could begin to tilt towards a more LGBTQ-friendly stance, especially given some more recent interviews. I’m not excusing her, I’m just leaving room for the idea that maybe she should be allowed to grow as a person.

The headlines on this story are sort of unfair overall. Huffington Post went with “Tina Fey Drags White Women Who Regret Voting for Trump.” But Tina Fey wasn’t exactly dragging anyone, I don’t think. Fey took part in a big benefit event for the ACLU in New York on Friday. As part of the benefit, Fey did a discussion with two ACLU people and that’s where she “dragged” white ladies. Except that she was basically telling white women to check out MSNBC instead of HGTV. Like, the subtext of this is “acknowledge your privilege, white ladies who voted for Trump.” But it that “dragging”?

White women love Tina Fey, but Tina Fey isn’t too happy with white women, especially the ones who voted for Donald Trump. During “Stand for Rights: A Benefit for the ACLU” on Friday night, Fey sat down with New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman and ACLU deputy legal director Louise Melling for a conversation about the battle for women’s rights and the responsibility each of us have to fight for protections that might not directly impact our lives.

After the election, exit polls revealed that a majority of white women ? 53 percent, to be exact ? supported Trump in the election, compared to the 43 percent who voted for Hillary Clinton.

“A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would maybe like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV,” Fey said. “I would want to urge them to like, ‘You can’t look away’ because it doesn’t affect you this minute, but it’s going to affect you eventually. Again, open two windows. Do watch HGTV. [Don’t] turn our attention away from what is happening.”

After questioning Lieberman and Melling about the current state of reproductive rights, Fey expanded her plea to all white women, including herself, to exercise compassion and empathy in Trump’s America.

“I personally will make my own pledge as a college-educated white woman to not look away,” she said, “to not pretend that things are happening now won’t eventually affect me if we don’t put a stop to it.”

[From HuffPo]

I don’t want to write some huge diatribe against Tina Fey and how she represents Peak White Feminism, mostly because I don’t believe that. I think Tina has said some bad sh-t and I think she has a history of practicing respectability politics on women in general, i.e., if you’re not a sexually repressed, college-educated, heterosexual and married white woman, then you’re not as important as the women who do “play by the rules.” But I also think that she’s trying to be a more productive ally – as evidenced by this ACLU benefit and discussion – and that she has the power to speak to a lot of those white women who did vote for Trump.

Of course, if you were being ungenerous towards Fey and those white women who voted for Trump, you could argue that they were fine with voting for Bigly and/or staying silent on important issues as long as it didn’t affect them personally. Now that the sh-t is hitting the proverbial fan and the political realities are affecting them, then suddenly we’re all in this together and we need to stop watching HGTV and pay attention because somewhere in this country a white lady is being oppressed!

I chose not to write about Emperor Bigly this weekend, not that there was a lack of articles about him. I just needed a break from Bigly Updates. But it’s Monday and another fresh hell is upon us, so let’s get to some of the stories going around.

Bigly went golfing again this weekend. He’s spent more time on weekend vacations and on the links than any previous president has in their first few months. This was actually his 14th golf outing in his 10 weeks in office. This weekend, Bigly went golfing with Rand Paul and they talked about healthcare, because why not?

Bigly’s new interview with the Financial Times. He says he’s still working on healthcare. He says “I don’t lose. I don’t like to lose.” He still blames Democrats for the Trumpcare failure.

Bigly tried to bully NBC’s Chuck Todd. Todd is the moderator of Meet the Press. Todd is also – just my opinion – one of the most trustworthy journalists on NBC, or any network. Baby Fists tweeted Saturday morning: “When will Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd and @NBCNews start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL and stop with the Fake Trump/Russia story… It is the same Fake News Media that said there is ‘no path to victory for Trump’ that is now pushing the phony Russia story. A total scam!” Yes, the Russia story is so fake that the FBI has been investigating it for a year. Also: Bigly is such a moron.

Bigly admires the Pence marriage. Bigly must read the blogs, because he was aware of the story last week that VP Mike Pence refuses to eat meals alone with any woman who is not his wife. Bigly told reporters: “I will tell you, he has one hell of a good marriage going.”

Susan Rice & the “unmasking.” Allegedly, Obama’s NSA Susan Rice was the Obama official who requested the “unmasking” of several people who were in communication with Trump officials. Which is sort of what I suspected – Obama did not “wiretap” Bigly Trump, but Trump and his people were at times caught in a larger NSA dragnet in which foreign nationals’ communications were being monitored. And Dr. Rice was one of the Obama people who knew who was talking to whom. Of course, now the Deplorables are like “PROOF!!1!!”

Mike Flynn is super-forgetful. He forgot to include all of his shady Russian speaking fees from his financial disclosure forms. So forgetful!

April is National Sexual Assault and Prevention Month. Bigly, an alleged sexual assailant of more than a dozen women, made a statement.

Last thing: this came out last week and I just never got around to posting it. Here’s a short video of Bigly compulsively organizing and reorganizing stuff in front of him. People wonder if he’s slightly OCD.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attend a reception in Paris

Prince William and Kate didn’t have any royal events this weekend, which sucks because gossip is so dead and I really need some new photos of Kate-in-a-hat or William’s moose knuckle. Will and Kate did go out this weekend though – they attended a private get-together at Pippa’s new home in South Kensington. And when I say Pippa’s home, I mean Terribly Rich James Matthews’ home, which is where Pippa lives. Pippa moved in with Terribly Rich James last year. They will be married in a little more than a month, and so Terribly Rich and Pippa hosted a little get-together for their families to meet. James’ parents and siblings were there, and the whole Middleton clan was there too: Carole, Michael, James Middleton, Kate and William (Bill Middleton!). William wore jeans (how informal!) and Kate wore a new Alice Temperley dress.

ICYMI: “Kate and Prince William meet Pippa Middleton’s future in-laws” https://t.co/zim0GvU3dE via @MailOnline pic.twitter.com/isqQguQ2fA

— WhatKateWore.com (@WhatKateWore) April 2, 2017

Speaking of Terribly Rich James and Pippa’s May wedding, did you know that Pippa has already done her “hen party”? That’s Brit-speak for bachelorette party. According to the Sun, Pippa slipped away to Meribel, France for a long ski weekend. Kate was there too. Guess when it happened? The SAME weekend that William was in Verbier, Switzerland with his “lads.” And thus ends the mystery of what Kate was up to that weekend.

The Duchess of Cambridge went on sister Pippa’s secret skiing hen do — on the same weekend husband Wills was away partying with his pals in the Alps. The two groups even shared the same private jet as they hit the slopes last month. But while the Duke’s gang headed for Verbier in Switzerland, Kate and Pippa were around 100 miles away in Meribel, France.

A friend told The Sun: “Pippa loves skiing so it was her first choice for a hen weekend. They stayed in a really exclusive catered chalet with maids and chef, who ensured that they were totally spoilt. The owners also wanted to impress their royal guests so the girls were showered with gifts. They were given Swatch watches, Ugg slippers, leather-bound notebooks and bespoke fragrances. It was a very small, private party and they had an amazing time.”

The private jet was paid for by the Middletons ahead of 33-year-old Pippa’s wedding next month to tycoon James Matthews, 41. Prince William, 34, was heavily criticised for missing the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on March 13.

[From The Sun]

Surely we should criticize Kate the same way too? I mean, she wasn’t even stuck at home with the kids! I assume Grandma Carole watched the kids while William and Kate flew off for their separate holidays. I assume it would have been too much to ask for William to spend a weekend alone with his children rather than use his sister-in-law’s hen party as an excuse to jet off and party with the “lads”? While I’m more understanding of Kate’s reasoning – Pippa is her only sister and presumably this will be Pippa’s only hen party – the fact is that both Will and Kate probably should have made the effort to come back for Commonwealth Day. Although I guess I have to give some props to Kate – she kept this information locked down while William’s trip because public and messy almost immediately afterwards.

At this point, can I just say outright that Susan Sarandon’s politics are a flaming pile of garbage and just leave it at that? Or will someone say, “You need to provide receipts”? Fine, here are the receipts: over the past year, she has said some profoundly ignorant things about Hillary Clinton, Jill Stein and Donald Trump. She’s a purity-test progressive and Bernie-or-Buster who honestly believed that Trump was a more palatable candidate than Hillary Clinton. When she was rightfully criticized after the election, she spewed a bunch of bulls–t about how at least people are “awake” now.

So, Sarandon appeared on Friday night’s episode of Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert is no longer doing celebrity fluff and stupid skits. He’s leaning into politics in a big way, and his ratings have gone up as a consequence. So when Sarandon sat down, he started in on her about her politics.

I like the fact that Colbert didn’t even give her a chance at the beginning to talk about Feud, he just went IN on politics straight away. He asked her, “You said, ‘Some people feel that Trump might bring about the revolution immediately.’ A) How’s that going? What’s your assessment of how ‘the revolution’ is going?” This is what she said:

“Well, I’m so happy that you asked — not really, but OK, we’ll get into it. Well, have you seen this many town hall meetings of people from all parties storming and knocking on the doors of their representatives and complaining and screaming and yelling?” Sarandon asked. Colbert replied, “Not since 2010.”

Sarandon wasn’t having it. “No. Not since the ‘70s, I think. This is really out of control. Now there are town hall meetings everywhere. I saw one in California where they were screaming about ICE coming in and taking people. I mean, people are really awake now because ‘the cracks let the light in,’ as Leonard Cohen would say. You need that ‘crack’…Like, Goldman Sachs has been in our politics since forever and now we’re noticing because this guy is such a bozo, he’s doing everything so badly, that he’s not slick like everybody else. All the fracking that’s been going on… Now everybody’s awake, they’re energized… They’re calling their senators; they’re donating to all of these groups. You’re funnier, don’t you think? It’s doing great things for comedy.”

[From NY Magazine]

She goes on to say that, basically, everything is going to plan and the next step – I guess? – is “identifying real progressives” who will promise to get us healthcare, etc, and I’m sure that in Sarandon’s delusional little 5-year-old mind, what we really need now are more progressive purity tests. Here’s what I don’t get though, Susan: did we really NEED Emperor Bigly Fists in office to do all of this? I get her point about Bigly being such a shock to the system and how he’s spurred all of this activism, etc. But I still don’t understand how our current reality is somehow preferable to the alternate reality wherein Democrats, progressives and moderates all came together to vote Hillary Clinton into office and then set about dragging her to the left during her presidency. That somehow being “awake” now suddenly justifies the enormous sh-tshow that is our country under Emperor Bigly.

And I absolutely loathe this concept that people only became f–king AWAKE right now. Millions of people were plenty awake before Bigly. Those are the people who voted for Hillary Clinton because we took this sh-t seriously. We were already awake and we decided that a moderate Dem would always be a better ally than Bigly.

Naya Rivera & David Spade were alllll over each other in Hawaii — here’s what’s really going on with them… https://t.co/MDrG0Nx4uN pic.twitter.com/ogXe6NNOQQ

— EntertainmentTonight (@etnow) April 1, 2017

I have been gossiping professionally long enough to remember some of the beautiful famous women whom David Spade has date over the years. He’s a bit like Adam Duritz, the lead singer of Counting Crows, in that people see the women he dates and wonder what it is about him that’s attractive to them. I would guess Spade is funny, although if that’s the case his roles really haven’t shown that. He’s been with Heather Locklear, Lara Flynn Boyle, Pamela Anderson, Nicolette Sheridan and most recently Charlotte McKinney. That’s not even a comprehensive list. So there’s plenty of precedence for Spade pulling gorgeous women and now he’s with Naya Rivera, 30. Spade is 52 years old. The two were photographed cuddling in a pool in Hawaii. Spade is on vacation with Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider because they’re all on some comedy tour together. Rivera has a one year-old son with her ex, Ryan Dorsey, whom she split with late last year after two years of marriage. Spade has an eight year-old daughter with ex Jillian Grace, a 31 year-old Playboy model. Here’s more on their romantic jaunt in Hawaii. Apparently they met up there randomly and didn’t go together, but I side eye that account. Rivera and Spade seems to have been working together last year.

Aside from sharing a kiss, the eyewitness says Spade and Rivera were discreet. “The pair went for a short swim, hugged and had lots of body contact in the pool. They kept to one side of the pool where there was the most covering from prying eyes,” the eyewitness recalls. “Outside of the pool, they sat on lounge chairs and talked animatedly. They spent about an hour poolside together.”

“They were very happy,” the onlooker adds. “They looked pretty comfortable together.”

The eyewitness also tells ET that the two were spotted eating at Duke’s restaurant in Waikiki. “They were definitely out and about together,” the eyewitness notes.

Another source tells ET that Spade and Rivera’s relationship is “very casual and they had a fun time together.”

“Naya was in Hawaii with a friend and met up with David,” the source explains. “They have known each other for a little bit through friends.”

In addition to spending time with Spade, Rivera has been sharing selfies on Instagram this week of her posing in a sexy black bikini. “Cuz why not!” she captioned one of the pics.

In response to this story, Naya Instagrammed some stupid video about how the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are dating. We have photos of her getting up on David Spade in a pool at a resort where there normally would not be paparazzi. Of course they want us to know that they’re a thing and this isn’t just a weird rumor. For whatever reason, they’re either together or want us to think they are. I give it a couple of months. I don’t think this is a joke but a lot of other people are understandably wondering about it.

As many are aware by now, we are in full Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez relationship rollout. A J.Lo rollout always has an accelerated timeline so she’s right on track. The News Leak happened last month, followed by photographic evidence and then a romantic, childless getaway. Friday saw A-Rod’s confirmation of the relationship while appearing on The View so we only have J.Lo’s confirmation and then ring speculation to go!

Rodriguez publicly confirmed their relationship on The View Friday, and the former Yankees player couldn’t hold back his praise for the pop superstar.

“It’s obvious. We’ve been having a great time,” he said when asked directly about whether or not he and Lopez are officially an item. “We’re having a great time. She’s an amazing, amazing girl. One of the smartest human beings I’ve ever met and also an incredible mother.”

Rodriguez added that the Shades of Blue actress is also down-to-earth, despite her megastar status, something that he very much appreciates. “She just likes simple things,” he said. “I mean, she’s a very, very simple person. Loves family. Is a great sister. Is a great daughter.”

As far as facts most people don’t know about Lopez, Rodriguez shared that she ran track in high school and is actually very athletic, before divulging her guilty-pleasure snacks.

“She would kill me if I said too much,” he said, before spilling that she indulges on “chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.”

[From US Magazine and USA Today]

You can watch the clip here. When I read these quotes, I was ready to pull out my feminist soapbox and trounce this guy. But if you watch it, the nonsense is on The View’s panel, not A0Rod. For instance, as I mentioned in the Mayim Bialik post, I’m not crazy about people publicly referring to women as “girls.” (I am not crazy about it in private but I understand that could fall under ‘friend-speak’ preferences.) But Sara Haines introduces the subject of J.Lo by saying, “Supposedly – you have a new lady boo?” So A-Rod’s answer wasn’t bad. And his checklist of her ‘accomplishments’ being to whom she is related is an attempt to bridge the idiocy of the panels’ questions and his admiration of a very accomplished woman. The bit about J.Lo being a track star was in answer to being asked for some deep secret about J.Lo. I’m not surprised that she’s athletic but I didn’t know she was a track star so it was a good, non-invasive secret to spill. I came away from the clip feeling better about Rodriguez… and distaste for everyone on The View save for Joy who basically gives up trying to ask anything relevant a quarter of the way into the inane grilling.

J.Lo and A-Rod were spotted (and photographed – you can see the pics here) on two separate dates this weekend. They make a striking pair, not that that counts for anything but does make for great photo-viewing. And, of course, we already know, “They definitely see a future together.” I wish them both well. This relationship comes with more baggage than a socialite on a cruise but they are both adults, accomplished and protected financially by good teams so God bless.

Oh sweet jay-sus. This shot is from two weeks ago – what is that on her third finger? Guess they decided to skip ahead just to spice things up?

Just yesterday my kid and I were trying to decide if we were desperate enough to see Boss Baby (we weren’t, but a lot of other people were). He saw the trailer and asked if that was Alec Baldwin, whom he knows from SNL. I said it was and then remembered that Alec, who now is the lead voice in a kid’s movie, once chewed his 12 year-old daughter out in a voicemail message. I showed my kid the Dora the Explorer remix of Alec’s message and he thought it was hilarious. My point is that if you told me Alec hasn’t had a drink for over 30 years I wouldn’t believe you. He’s allegedly been sober since 1985 though. Alec told his story to George Stephanopoulos of ABC News:

What if you hadn’t stopped drinking in February, 1985?
I think that I was one of the people who was lucky that it stuck. Therefore therif I didn’t get it then I would have gotten it eventually. I know that at that time and what I described, overdosing on drugs, which I kept private for years, I think that I would have gotten it eventually but I’m glad I got it when I did.

Not many people get sober when they’re young. I got sober when I was about to turn 27. Those two years that I lived in that white hot period as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker to my misery, that was a tough time. There was really a lot of pain in there.

[From ABC News]

Good for him for getting sober and sticking with it if that’s what he did. I’m still questioning whether he was sober that entire time, but I guess sober people can be rageaholics too, people in the throes of their addictions don’t have a monopoly on anger. Alec seems to be sharing this story now because he has a new memoir out this week, called Nevertheless. It sounds like he’s co-opting the women’s movement motto “Nevertheless, she persisted” doesn’t it? He has another interview with CBS News where he explains how he got into drugs when he first moved to LA in the 80s. He said “that’s the way it was back then, everyone was drinking and drugging.” It’s still that way, it just depends on the people you spend time with on a daily basis.

Also, Alec talked about his encounters with the paparazzi, he’s has several run-ins with them, and he said they were after “a picture of my wife and her fit little body running down the street.” He claimed that one photographer tripped and fell on top of a baby in a stroller in front of his building and that “if I decide to take the law into my own hands in some of those cases that’s just want I’ve got to do. I don’t really worry about it that much.” He’s assaulted paparazzi several times and he never hesitates to put people on blast and tell his side of the story. If a photographer fell on a baby in front of his building, don’t you think he would have told the press at the time?
