In the early days of his career, Luke Evans was seen primarily as a music theater actor, and as such, he felt pretty open in coming out publicly in interviews. When Hollywood came calling, Luke seemingly jumped back into the closet, except… it was more nuanced than that. Luke never flat-out denied being gay, he just hired a publicist who tried to strong-arm journalists into not asking any questions about Luke’s sexuality. And when he was asked personal questions about what he was looking for in a partner, Luke was pointedly vague, refusing to use even gendered pronouns. My take is that part of it is legitimately “stay in the glass closet, dude” but another part of it is just discomfort with talking about any part of his personal life. I don’t know. Anyway, Luke has a piece in the latest issue of Mr. Porter where he’s once again keeping it vague about his personal life. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

He enjoys working on action movies: “Stabbing someone in the chest, tumbling to miss a bomb, or whatever it is, you have to hit your mark every single time. You have to remember a sequence of movements and have accuracy, consistency, and replication. Fight choreography is dance. And I can dance.”

Singing for the live-action Beauty And The Beast (he plays Gaston): “[My vocal cords are] made of well-used leather. They’ve never been out of use for long, in fact. It’s just that, as Gaston, I got to sing more often, and in front of people, instead of on my own in my living room.”

Talking about his sexuality: “If somebody talks to me about my personal life, well, the clue is in the title: it’s personal, it’s private. I’m protecting myself, not because it’s anything that I’m embarrassed about, but because it’s mine.”

The future: Five years from now, Mr Evans muses, he’d like to be living in a warmer climate. Somewhere by the sea, ideally, and wouldn’t it be nice to feel settled enough in one place to have a dog? “There’s this unconditional love, no questions asked,” he explains. He knows exactly which dog he wants. Not the breed – the individual. “I fell in love with someone’s dog once, and I sort of want that dog. Not another dog – that one,” he says.

He’s single, gentlemen: He is currently single, and while this lasts, he’s treating it as an opportunity for “finding contentment with myself, and not relying on anybody else to validate it”. He adds, “I think being an only child has hindered that slightly, because I’ve always wanted to be around other people.”

[From Mr. Porter]

Only children have such strange take-aways from their only-childness, I’ve found. I’m an only child too, and for me, it meant that even when I was very young, I was very comfortable around adults and being spoken to like an adult. It means that I’m happiest when I’m alone with my own thoughts too. But other only-children are like Luke: needy, almost? Needing to be surrounded by people, to fill that void. It’s strange to me. As for what he says about his private life… eh. I give him credit for not lying and not denying. He’s a 37 year old man and who he bangs is his business. He doesn’t owe us an explanation.

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has reportedly checked back into rehab in a facility in Tennessee to deal with her anxiety and depression. This is Selena’s second stay in rehab, having gone once before in 2104. At that time, numerous stories speculated of drug addiction. A year later, Selena corrected those rumors by divulging that she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus. Last month, Selena cancelled the remaining dates of her Revival tour to deal with her health. After a few cryptic tweets, concern for Selena grew. Multiple sources have confirmed that Selena is, in fact, back in rehab for her mental health and that she is improving little by little.

Selena Gomez is on the mend.

Multiple sources confirm in the new issue of Us Weekly that the pop star, 24, has been recovering at a Tennessee treatment facility since announcing August 30 that she was taking a break to manage “anxiety, panic attacks and depression.” The “Kill Em With Kindness” singer canceled 34 remaining dates on her Revival world tour as a result.

“Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,” a source close to the pop star tells Us. “She can go to a very dark place.” The insider describes the facility, just outside of Nashville, as a “private and quiet place,” but “super intense.”

The Disney Channel alum — who went to rehab in 2014, one year after being diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease — also stopped working on new music. “She was supposed to be recording, but she hasn’t told anyone when she’ll be back in studio,” a music industry source explains.

[From Us Weekly]

I don’t know why but I hold a real soft spot for Selena. I fell a little in love with her on Wizards of Waverly Place and it just never left me. Although, she doesn’t get any free passes from me, like when she convolutes shade thrown on Taylor Swift with BLM. However, I really feel for her. I feel bad that she is suffering, that her mental health is compounded by her physical health and that she has to broadcast every step of her process to avoid rumors of drug abuse.

I’m glad to hear this positive update because that phrase “she can go to a very dark place” is well-known to anyone who has or knows someone with mental health issues. Fans were so relieved to hear of her recent sightings around town, they started a #SelenaIsBackParty on Twitter. She received more good news on Monday in the form of five AMA nominations, including Artist of the Year. And Gossip Cop says she is in no way involved in the Brangelina divorce so she won’t have to face that pitchfork-wielding mob when she checks out. I wish Selena well and hope she is fully back up on her feet soon.

Here is Selena in Tennessee mingling with fans last week:

The wage gap is real. It exists in every industry, at every level of industry, but in the film industry the wage gap isn’t just a product of gender/racial bias, it’s also the result of a scaled compensation system that rewards stars more than anyone else. Professional sports, at least in the US, …

Zooey Deschanel’s thing is that she has those huge blue eyes, and a lot of magazines make the most of it by using some of her particularly “wide eyed” expressions in their editorials. But I have to think that the choice of this photo for Cosmopolitan’s cover was some kind of mistake? She doesn’t look “surprised,” she looks mad. Anyway, Zooey chats with Cosmo’s November issue because she’s promoting Trolls, the animated film. But the most interesting quotes are about humanity, social media and maternity leave.

On having to record a rap verse for a remix of Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out” for her new animated film, Trolls: “They were like, are you ready to rap? I was like, uhhh… Justin Timberlake was producing it. He was there, and obviously, I have great admiration for the man. I didn’t want to screw it up, but the one thing I can’t do is that. It was really scary, but Justin was a great coach.”

On her maternity leave from New Girl: “We live in a country that doesn’t give paid maternity leave. I felt very lucky to have an employer who was understanding and let me have, like, four months with my baby before I had to go back to work.”

On taking a break from social media: “A lot of very strange, tragic, sad, unfathomable things have happened… to the point where you’re like, no amount of thoughts and prayers can make this better. It makes me more reflective. I took a social-media break because everyone feels the need to comment on everything immediately. Sometimes, we need to be thoughtful about what we say.”

On humanity: “When I was growing up, I always thought the world would get less bigoted, less racist, and people would be more open-minded. For a while, I thought that was happening, but it’s been very scary the last few years. I really, truly believe that people are basically good in nature, and in the end, that prevails.”

[From Cosmopolitan]

“A lot of very strange, tragic, sad, unfathomable things have happened… to the point where you’re like, no amount of thoughts and prayers can make this better.” I think she’s talking about the inundation of violence, police shootings, mass shootings, etc? And I feel the same way – on social media, there’s the weird undercurrent of, like, grief-policing. You’re supposed to say “thoughts and prayers” to the victims and then people yell because you’re not being political enough and then if you are political, people yell at you for that. And I agree with her about the bigots and lunatics taking over the asylum – it has been “very scary” the past few years especially.

Amber Rose has been getting some really interesting brand-endorsements and modeling gigs lately. Her latest is a collaboration with Flirt Cosmetics, a very mainstream cosmetics company which, surprisingly, isn’t asking Amber to change whatsoever. Amber is actually a pretty good brand ambassador for whatever you want: she gives great interviews, she’s thoughtful, and she’s able to integrate her brand with whichever brand she’s representing. To promote this collaboration, Amber chatted with Allure to talk about makeup and… masturbation. Yay.

Her latest project: I still have no idea why [Flirt Cosmetics] even wanted me! I thought they were going to come in and say, “Hey, can you grow your hair out? Cover your tattoos up?” Instead it was “We love your buzz cut. We love all your tattoos. We love your feminism. We’re obsessed with your SlutWalk.” They embraced me for me. And that’s what makes them extra cool.

Her lash love: I have very small eyes, so lashes open them up. That’s always been my thing. I was super excited when I heard about the amazing eyelash applicator from Flirt.

Her lawbreaking beauty past: Back in Philly, all my friends were wearing dark brown lip liner and lighter brown lipstick. And everybody had their baby hairs, like, plastered down to their forehead. That was the move. We were really poor, and I couldn’t afford the lipstick. So I went into a drugstore and stole one because I had to have it. I stuck it up my sleeve, and I felt really bad—but I did it all in the name of beauty.

Her glowing-skin secret:
Masturbation. I wish I had the time to masturbate every day in reality, but I don’t. I say a lot of those things on [The Amber Rose Show] because I am very sex-positive. I do say those things in a way where I am very serious, but it’s also a joke.

Her go-to scent: I’ve worn Perry Ellis 360 forever. I was wearing that in Philly, and I still wear it now.

Her red carpet regrets: None. I just don’t give a sh-t. I do what I want. Then I put it out in the universe, and people talk. And then they get over it, you know?

[From Allure]

Wouldn’t you love it if other celebrities cited masturbation for their good looks and clear skin? Like, I read those celebrity interviews every day, where some starlet goes “oh, I just drink a lot of water” and “I use so-and-so fancy skin cream.” I want the next starlet to say “I pay a dermatologist thousands of dollars to look like this and I masturbate every day. Boom.” I wonder if there’s actual medical studies to back that up – I mean, I would assume that you would get that release of chemicals from a Big O and you would be happier in general, so… yeah, probably, you would have better skin. Amber is awesome.

One of the unexpected reactions to Donald Trump’s general deplorableness and his specific comments about grabbing women “by the p-ssy” is that a bunch of awesome dudes have been coming out and talking about how those kinds of comments and actions are despicable, offensive and wrong. While women don’t need the big, brave men to come and protect us from a radioactive dumpster fire, it’s nice that many men have wanted their ally-voices to be heard. Here’s LeBron James – who recently endorsed Hillary Clinton – speaking about what he thought about Trump’s comments:

LeBron on Donald Trump: “That’s not locker room talk. That’s trash talk.” pic.twitter.com/3optkXraM3

— Hayden Grove (@H_Grove) October 12, 2016

Can I just say? I really like LeBron. Truly. He’s growing into such a wonderful advocate and ally. It’s amazing to see.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden appeared on Seth Meyers’ show last night. Meyers has been ripping Trump apart on a daily basis, and this week, Meyers’ show is filming in Washington, so that’s how Biden came to appear on it. As many know, Biden was the author of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1990 and he has been a long-time advocate for women’s issues for decades. When asked about the tape, Biden said: “First of all, what I found astounding is that he would so publicly — no matter who he was talking to — that he would acknowledge that he engaged in the textbook definition of sexual assault. I mean, this is absolutely outrageous behavior. I’ve spent more of my career trying to figure out how to change the culture in this country so that we treat women with respect and with dignity…The cardinal sin of all is a man raising his hand and taking advantage of women. I can’t understand how anyone can justify the abuse of power.”

And Tom Hanks is currently promoting Inferno and he was asked about the Trump Tape and Hanks maybe had the best reaction because he didn’t default to the “I have a mother, I have a wife” explanation for his reaction. Hanks said: “I’m offended as a man. I’m not offended as a husband or a father, I’m offended as a guy. That’s just not right, I’m sorry. It’s not right at work. It’s not right in the locker room. It’s wrong. Period. The end. That’s all.”

E! Online has excerpts from Bryan Cranston’s new memoir, A Life in Parts, and I have to wonder when he even had the time to write it, or to get help writing it. He’s just so prolific an actor and I keep picturing him in the bathtub writing on a typewriter and smoking like his character in Trumbo. Reviewers on Amazon rave about the book and say that it’s not a tell-all so much as a series of revealing vignettes. Judging by the details on E!, they do get revealing. Cranston muses about murdering an ex whom he calls a stalker, he admits he lost his virginity to a prostitute (he’s said this before but I would presume he gets into more detail) and he says that he has an agreement with his wife that they will go to therapy whenever one of them sees the need. He’s been married to his second wife, Robin Dearden, since 1989 so it must be working. I’ll just include a few of these here, and you can read more on E! or in his book!

Dreaming of Death and Murder: Before meeting and falling in love with his wife Robin Dearden, Bryan dated an ex-girlfriend named “Ava” who he alleges was a stalker. In the book, the actor recounted a gruesome daydream where he imagined taking out his anger on Ava by slamming “her head against the wall with a metronomic consistency. Clumps of hair and bits of skin and brain matter stuck to the brick.”

“I remained calm. I was released from fear and anger. I wasn’t glad or relieved or filled with satisfaction. I felt nothing. I let go of her and the body slid to the floor,” Bryan continued. (page 120)

The Power of Therapy: While he may have played the tough and macho Walter White on Breaking Bad, Bryan has no hesitations about going to therapy. After his dad was gone, his sister Amy suggested all the siblings go to a professional. “I see a therapist from time to time when I’m feeling edgy or anxious, and Robin and I have been to a couples’ therapist periodically,” he admitted. “We have an agreement. If either of us feels like going, the other can’t object. I suggested this system to her before we were even married, and it’s worked for us over the years.” (page 255)

Saying Goodbye to Bryan’s Virginity: During his first trip abroad, Bryan and his buddies found themselves determined to lose their virginity. While two of his friends had no hesitation about paying for sex, Bryan was a bit more hesitant. It also didn’t help that he barely had any money on him. But once a woman was standing over him, all bets were off. “In the room, she indicated I should take off my clothes. This was happening,” he wrote. “There’d been no fireworks. No tenderness. No talking. We never exchanged names. I’d had no idea what I was doing. It was just this stranger and me at the particular moment in time. As uncomplicated as it should be.” (page 47)

[A Life in Parts via E! Online]

Have you dreamed of murdering an ex? I have but I’ve never admitted it before. It just seems so dark, but Cranston isn’t afraid to go there. Is it horribly misogynistic for a man to describe murdering an ex girlfriend in graphic detail or is it ok because it’s just a fantasy? I’m thinking of Eminem’s lyrics and I’m honestly asking because part of me is aghast and the other part realizes I’ve had those thoughts too. Also, it sounds rather practical to have an agreement with your partner to go to therapy whenever one of you feels like you need it. Relationships are work and getting outside help to reconnect can only be a positive thing, especially if you’re imagining scenarios where your partner ends up dead.
