I still have a love-hate relationship with Megyn Kelly. She’s capable of such witticism, intelligence and dare I say, good journalism. But she’s also a conservative shill with a complicated relationship with… most things. Especially feminism. Megyn is still shilling her book, Settle For More, all about the crap she’s been through in the past few years, with Roger Ailes (who sexually harassed her) and Donald Trump (who also harassed her and targeted her publicly as one of his enemies). But even though Megyn will stand up for women and some women’s issues, she still refuses to identify as a feminist because, in her words, that would “alienate half the women in the country.” I think that bothered me so much because I actually think she’s right – if she identified as a feminist, half the country would hate her. And that sucks. Anyway, Megyn has some other ideas about those mean ol’ feminists. She thinks feminists… did something to Melania Trump…?
Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly’s relationship with feminism is …complicated, to say the least. “My problem with the word feminist is that it’s exclusionary and alienating,” she wrote in her recently published memoir, Settle for More. But many of Kelly’s own beliefs could be considered “feminist:” She defended maternity leave on air, stood up to sexist attacks, and grilled Donald Trump’s campaign manager on his sexist comments. And, in an interview for Net-a-Porter’s Porter magazine scheduled to hit newsstands December 2, Kelly again played into her illusory identity of a feminist icon by defending Melania Trump.
“She’s been subjected to some really staunch feminism, and I’ve been really offended on her behalf,” Kelly told the magazine. (It’s unclear whether Kelly meant to say “staunch sexism,” or what “staunch feminism” means; we emailed the editors of Porter to ask for clarification and they confirmed the quote is correct.)
Kelly went on, “The New York Times called her a trophy wife and a mannequin, which is f-ed up and really offensive. Just because she’s gorgeous doesn’t mean you get to dismiss her. She speaks I think five languages. She’s a mother. She’s a supportive wife. She’s an entrepreneur. I don’t know how successful her businesses are, but she’s out there trying. Screw them for saying that.”
[From New York Magazine]
Here’s what’s wrong with this: everything. As a feminist, I wanted Melania and Ivanka Trump to show signs of life, signs that they understood that Donald Trump’s words and actions were and are unacceptable. And as a feminist, I was disappointed in what they said and did, not how they looked. The feminist critique of Melania isn’t based on her looks, it’s based on her words and actions, or her lack of words and actions. Every step of the way, she cosigned her husband’s politics and behavior, whether it was defending the “grab them by the p-ssy” tape, or justifying her husband’s fascist rhetoric and denying that he could and should be compared to Adolf Hitler. But there I go, subjecting Melania to my staunch feminism. WTF does that even mean?

Finally, some good news! Supernatural star Jensen Ackles and his actress wife Danneel Harris are the proud parents of twins – a boy and a girl. Jensen, 38 and Danneel, 37 announced their new bundles of joy on Friday via Instagram. Jensen posted an image of the “Thing 1? and Thing 2? characters from Dr. Seuss’ The Cat on the Hat, with the caption, “Danneel, JJ and I are excited to announce the birth of our twins Zeppelin Bram and Arrow Rhodes. They were born early yesterday morning. Everyone is doing great! #twinning”

You’ve got to give it to Jensen, he knows how to make a memorable and adorable social media announcement. Back in August, when he shared that he and his wife were expanding their family, Jensen posted a photo of five pairs of cowboy boots, featuring two very small ones in pink and blue. He captioned that picture, “Adding a couple of pairs of boots to the family later this year.” I’m no “kid person”, but damn if that isn’t cute.

Let’s talk about these names for a moment. Zeppelin and Arrow? I guess the latter is kind of cool, what with the superhero trend of late, but Zeppelin? Don’t these people ever take their kids’ futures into consideration? I can only assume the name Zeppelin is a nod to Robert Plant and company, but come on. I love the Who, but I wouldn’t name my kid after the band (although I can only imagine the hilarity that would ensue if I did). But, hey, at least they weren’t big fans of GWAR.
At least Zeppelin and Arrow won’t be the first in the Ackles family to have an unconventional name. They join the couple’s three-year-old daughter, new big sister Justice Jay, who goes by the nickname “JJ.” Let’s hope the playground ribbing is at a minimum for these kids… congrats to you, Jensen and Danneel!

Here are some photos of Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch at the Sky Women In Film and TV Awards over the weekend. Tom was on hand to present Amanda Nevill the Barclays Business Award, and Benedict was there to give Beryl Vertue the EON Productions Lifetime Achievement Award. Unfortunately for all of us, Bendy and Tommy did not pose for any photos together, although I’d like to think that they had a nice time together at the event. I don’t think Sophie Hunter was there? So it could have been a boys’ night out.
There’s not a lot to talk about with either man these days. Benedict has finished up his promotional work for Doctor Strange (which is a huge hit), and I guess he might do some promotion for Sherlock Season 4 ahead of its January premiere, although I’m not expecting much from Bendy. Tom is also a few months away from another big promotional tour with Kong: Skull Island, although I’m hopeful that we’ll be seeing him at the Golden Globes (as a nominee) and the Oscars (maybe as a presenter). My ideal gossip-dream would be for Tom to get a gig as an Oscar presenter and an invite to the Vanity Fair Oscar party, and that’s where Taylor Swift would show up with her girl squad. And then… I don’t know. An awkward confrontation? A dance-off? Tears and a shredded “I Heart T.S.” t-shirt? Speaking of, OK! Magazine has this (sort of dumb) story about Tiddles.
Tom Hiddleston must have been one amazing boyfriend. According to reports, Taylor Swift is letting her ex have a say in the songs she writes about him for her next album.
“Taylor sends him drafts and loops him in on how the process is going, and nothing will be recorded without Tom’s consent,” a source told OK! exclusively. Tom and Taylor dated briefly—but very publicly—over the summer. Before linking up with Tom, Taylor had been in a serious relationship with DJ Calvin Harris for over a year. The way she quickly moved on to Tom made some wonder if her relationship with the Thor actor was genuine.
According to the source, “This was their deal right from the start of their fauxmance…It’s a contractual situation and the result is to make them look good.”
Is Calvin giving Taylor that same approval? “Calvin is another story,” said the source.
[From OK Magazine]
Do you believe that Taylor is giving Tom a heads-up about anything involving her new album? Where would be the fun in that? No, of course not. She doesn’t give any of her exes a heads-up. She wants them to be surprised. She wants them to be asked questions – hopefully in the middle of a live-broadcast interview – about what they think of her new album. If Taylor is as savvy as I think she is (she is), then she’ll also keep her eye on the timing of Tom’s Kong promotional tour. What do you want to bet that her promotional work for her album falls right around the same time?

Katie looks STUNNING in Angeleno Magazine — she’s on the cover of Modern Luxury magazines across the U.S. WOW! https://t.co/tVkx4N8lcH pic.twitter.com/w4dOXX8Iti
— All We Had (@AllWeHadmovie) November 22, 2016
The photo above is from Katie Holmes Angeleno/Modern Luxury editorial. When she’s styled right, like she is here, she is stunning to see. Katie’s directorial debut, All We Had, comes out this Friday. We’ve been talking about this film for so long, I can’t believe it’s just now opening in theaters. The movie is about the relationship between a single mother and her teenage daughter so obviously, the go to talking point for the movie’s press is about Katie and her role as a mother. In two new interviews, one for Modern Luxury and one for the New York Times, Katie once again emphasized that she is a mother first and every thing else second. In addition, she explained that her main goal is to give Suri the same normal childhood she had growing up.
On creating normalcy for Suri
“When I’m not on set, I’m being a mom. I’m doing mom stuff. When I go to an event, I leave at 10pm because it’s really important to me to be a mom that is dependable.”
On giving Suri a normal childhood
“It’s important to me. We do a lot of cousin time with my nieces and nephews. I think the most important thing in my life is giving my child the childhood I want her to have. That comes first. That dictates where I work and when I work because it’s my main job right now.”
On dedicating her new film to her daughter
“It was my first film, and I want her to always know that she’s the inspiration behind everything, and so hopefully it means something as she gets older. Just to let her know how important she is.”
Her approach to being a mom
“Honestly I think that there are so many books and opinions about how to be a great mom, and you have good days and bad days, and sometimes you do great and sometimes you could have done better. But I have to say I’m really enjoying having a 10-year-old. She’s a remarkable person.”
Question from NY Times: “Are you still single, or is there a secret marriage we have to talk about?”
“Nooo, I’m not married. But thank you for asking.”
[From Modern Luxury and NY Times]
The quote getting the most headlines is the one about leaving an event by 10 to be dependable. I have to consider how many events Katie must attend because of her job when I read things like this. Rules such as these likely do provide structure for everyone in that case. One question though, aren’t 10-year olds in bed by 10? Would she even know when Katie came home if that’s the case? I know, I know – not the point. I don’t have any problem with how much Katie talks about her life as a mother. I do honestly think she loves it and as she is carrying the full parental load, she is entitled to all the credit she gets. I simply don’t relate. My children are fascinating and I could talk about them until I am blue in the face but my role of being their mother is one of the less exciting thing about me. Unless I’ve had a glass of wine and a bad day, it’s not something I discuss. One thing I can relate to is when Katie told ET of Suri, “I know myself better because of her.” Regardless of my mothering skills, my kids have changed me for the better, of that I am certain.
The quote I was most interested in was the secret marriage one, which, alas, is not answered to my satisfaction. Katie’s relationship status with Jamie Foxx has become one of the biggest mysteries of the modern age. (That might be a bit of an exaggeration.) Of course, it could be Katie’s work schedule keeping her from a romantic relationship of late. She appears next in her second turn as Jackie for the TV mini series The Kennedys: After Camelot, of which Katie also directed an episode. She also has three new films coming up, Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and a comedy titled Coup D’Etat with Michael Caine. In addition, Katie will appear in her friend Judy Greer’s directorial debut A Happening of Monumental Proportions, returning the favor as Judy supported Katie by appearing in All We Had.

Hilary Duff was a cohost on The Talk Thursday when they brought up Jennifer Aniston’s longstandingpoint that she shouldn’t be judged for not having children. The Talk mentioned Aniston’s essay for The Huffington Post, which came out in July, and her Marie Claire interview last month, where she said she shouldn’t be “whittled down to a sad childless human.” Aniston was asked again about this on a recent British talkshow, Lorraine, and she repeated her point that tabloids are unfair to women and that “we’re reduced down, if we don’t have a baby or a white picket fence or a husband then we’re useless.” Aisha Tyler posed the question to The Talk pane “have you ever been judged through a narrow lens?” and that’s when Duff said that she gets judged for being a mom.
“I see her point and she is such beautiful role model, and a smart woman to have the courage to say these things in Hollywood. But like I feel like I was judged for having a baby and now, I’m pigeonholed for being like a ‘mom,’ but then lots of women in the industry that don’t have a child yet are judged for like not having a child.
“It’s crazy that women we are the most in demand and the most desirable but the most judged and the hardest on one another. So much scrutiny. No one cares about men’s personal lives as much as women.”
Aisha Taylor: “No one says to like a 45 year-old man ‘You don’t have kids yet, oh so sad.’”
[From The Talk via People]
She was responding to a specific question so it wasn’t as bad as I initially assumed. Duff’s career now is all about pap walks and social media and trying to drum up interest in her personal life. Don’t get me wrong she seems harmless and superficially “nice,” albeit clueless, I just haven’t read one article about how she had kids too young or which reduces her to being a “mom.” Aniston played into the “childless” narrative by talking about it post-split with Pitt, but it was very much real and the tabloids harped on it. Duff may feel judged and that’s real to her, but she’s not dealing with anything like what Aniston went through.
