I’ve covered the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal tours from the beginning of their marriage, and I think their second Canadian tour (which began in late September) was probably their least controversial, their most “on message” and… their least notable. I’m sure Canadians loved hosting them, of course, but did they really make any news? We covered Kate’s clothes, because of course we did. But there were only a few speeches – made entirely by William – and their didn’t seem to be any real message to the trip other than “the young royals are in Canada and they’re wearing fancy clothes.” Some argue that we shouldn’t spend so much time talking about royal fashion, but if we stop covering that, what else is there to cover? The fact that William doesn’t even bother reading his briefing memos? So, we’re talking about fashion again, but this time it’s William’s fashion. Apparently, Kate’s “stylist” has taken over William’s wardrobe too.

His wife may rightly be lauded for her elegant outfits but Prince William’s own fashion choices have been so drab, one style magazine cruelly accused him of dressing like an estate agent. So now Kate has ordered her stylist Natasha Archer to give William a much-needed wardrobe makeover – and she has started by throwing out his ubiquitous brown loafers and his tatty trainers. William’s cords and chinos have also been bagged up ready for the charity shop, replaced by tighter- fitting tapered trousers that show off a bit of ankle and which are worn with a pair of desert boots from L.K. Bennett.

For the tour of Canada, the 29-year-old stylist – known to friends as Tash – added linen jackets, and sweaters from J Crew, Jaeger and Reiss, her favourite high street label. Sources tell me the makeover process was done tactfully, with Tash assuring the Prince, 34, that she was merely helping him to ‘edit’ and ‘freshen’ his wardrobe.

For more formal occasions, William will now been seen in suits by Savile Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes, and never double-breasted – a style favoured by his father, the Prince of Wales.

Kate will no doubt be thrilled that William’s ultimate style crime – white Asics trainers that he has worn for the best part of a decade – are finally out. As a source says: ‘You won’t be seeing him in those again any time soon.’

Tash has no training as a stylist at all, by the way. While she did improve Kate’s wardrobe since joining the “team” in 2014, that’s setting the bar way too low. Kate is famous for what she wears, but that’s not the same as saying she’s famously fashionable. Tash managed to get Kate to spend more of Charles’ money on clothes and that’s about it. As long as those damn wedges exist, I say Tash is a failure! As for Tash taking over William’s wardrobe… yes, I did notice that he has some new clothes and they weren’t notably horrible. But just like his wife, William loves some tight-ass trousers. Every time Kate’s skirt blows up, William’s moose knuckle gets more pronounced. Tash needs to take care of that too. Maybe “tactfully” suggest that a snug fit is doing him no favors?
