Sailor Brinkley Cook is 21 years old, part of that youth generation which grew up entirely on the internet and in the middle of the social media revolution. But what strikes me, sometimes, is that the bullsh-t of life is the same for every generation. I’m two decades older than Sailor, but I can remember feeling exactly the way she described when I was a teenager – ashamed of my imperfect body, sick at the thought of not looking beautiful or perfect or whatever. I compared myself to the girls in magazines. Sailor compares her body to the Instagram models. It’s all the same. This is what she posted:

I’m so f–king sick and tired of the photoshop… I’ve been so down on myself recently. Crying about my cellulite, letting the fat on my body ruin my day, getting mad that i’m not as skinny as i once was. The body dysmorphia and left over eating disorder tendencies have been coming in strong. As i come into myself as a young woman my body shifts and changes by the month, the “control” i felt i once had over it has been completely stripped away from me. Hormones, emotions, growing pains.

I go on instagram and scroll through photos of girls that look “perfect”.. shiny skin with not a bump to be seen, tiny little waist and thighs that look like chopsticks. And i compare myself, as if how someone on an app on my phone looks should directly correlate to how I feel about my body? What I’ve learned is that I run every day. I go to the gym 6 times a week. I fuel my body with beautiful food.

I am so f–king LUCKY to have two legs and a healthy body that takes me through life. I’m so tired of thinking anything that makes up ME is something to be ashamed of. So as most 21st century girls would do, I’m putting this out there on instagram. Declaring that I have cellulite, and a stomach that doesn’t always look “pleasant” (whatever the f-ck that means) and I am 100% imperfect human. And I’m proud as hell of my body! If you’re out there hating on yourself, stop!! Appreciate yourself. You’re body is so magical. That’s all. Have a nice day.

[From Sailor’s Instagram]

It’s so hard to fight through body dysmorphia. It’s so hard to sit back and be self-aware of the shame spiral you’re on about your body. And there really is no answer other than doing the work in therapy and just learning to accept your body, flaws and all. Of course, I can’t help but notice that Sailor actually is the “ideal”: blonde, thin, tall, beautiful. Even young, beautiful women feel like their body isn’t enough. It just… sucks. The only thing I can say is that once your hormones calm down a bit in your 20s, you do stop comparing yourself to whatever impossible standard is being idealized at the moment. But even then, I still shame-spiral at my age too. Ladies, let’s give ourselves a break.

I was talking to some friends on Zoom Sunday about lockdown breakups we’re anticipating. Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher came up, particularly because we’ve heard for years that their marriage is strained, but also because Carrie just posted a bikini pic. When women who don’t typically post photos like that start doing it, my spidey sense goes up. Well Carrie might have actually been promoting something, because CMT just covered the fact that there’s a four part series with Carrie and Mike, premiering tomorrow, called God and Country. I really hope someone else does the highlights for me, but I’ll watch it if I have to. It’s going to be published on a site called I Am Second, which Wiki calls “a platform for Christian evangelism.” It’s a non-profit founded by Norm Miller, the CEO of Interstate Batteries. Anyway Carrie and Mike are being used to get the message out about Jesus, because he doesn’t have enough followers in ‘Merica. (I’m sorry for phrasing it that way! I respect Christianity’s core beliefs, just not the way they’re misinterpreted and weaponized by the right.)

In the series trailer, Underwood admits that she always swore she’d never marry a hunter before she met Fisher. “As a child, never, not in a million years. We just differ drastically,” Underwood admits.

And after their storybook wedding in 2010, when their first son Isaiah came along in 2015, she recalls thinking, “Oh my gosh. I’m in love,” she said. But after Isaiah’s birth came three miscarriages, and Underwood explains how that was when she chose to lean into her faith instead of away from it. “I just had an honest conversation with God. I was hurt,” she says through her tears, “and I told Him how I felt.”

According to a press release about the series, the show will giver viewers an up-close and unfiltered glimpse into Underwood and Fisher’s life together, their relationship and faith, along with some much-needed inspiration on how they continue to sustain their marriage and find purpose beyond their careers as a country singer and a retired NHL player.

“We wanted to do this to share some of our personal journey in hopes that viewers will be inspired by it, and maybe even take one more step in pursuing a relationship with God,” Underwood said of the new series.

“Since first filming with I Am Second six years ago, I have seen God continue to grow my faith as Carrie and I have together walked through the natural joys and struggles of life. This new series is not only a continuation of the 2014 White Chair film, but hopefully a reminder to individuals of God’s faithfulness in all situations,” Fisher added.

[From CMT]

I watched the trailer, below, and Mike seems kind of… how do I put this, pretty but dim. That could be because he’s got one of those faces that doesn’t look real. It’s telling that Carrie said “we just differ drastically” and “I was never good with other people’s kids” while Mike said that he’s always wanted “lots of kids.” Carrie and Mike got married in the summer of 2010. She said, later that year and as late as 2012, that she wasn’t planning on having children. She and Mike have son Isaiah, 5, and Jacob, 1. (She’s been open about her miscarriages, which were in 2017 and 2018.) So something changed for them to have kids, but I’ve always had the impression that it wasn’t Carrie’s idea at first.

Here’s the trailer.

I choose love… I do not choose fear… I will walk (and fly ? ?) in trust, faith, peace and knowing. If God is for us who can be against us… no one ? Grateful to be joining family on this beautiful day ? #InLoveWeTrust #flyingagain

A post shared by Marla Maples (@itsmarlamaples) on May 24, 2020 at 12:28pm PDT

Marla Maples is rarely discussed, right? Imagine if a Democratic president had two living ex-wives – they would be discussed constantly and “used” for political purposes. But Ivana Trump is *somewhere* on a beach with a man half her age, and Marla Maples is… flying. Marla posted this photo to her Instagram – she wore a cloth mask and she’s sitting on a plane. She says “I choose love… I do not choose fear… I will walk (and fly ? ?) in trust, faith, peace and knowing.”

The positive thing I’ll say is that at least Marla isn’t arguing “I do not choose fear” as a way to avoid wearing a mask. But that being said, it still seems way too early to fly commercially for non-essential business. Marla apparently spent a few months in lockdown in Manhattan (where she has an apartment), but is now in Georgia. Maybe. The Daily Beast also said that Marla was calling into the Covid-hotline the Trump administration set up:

In an effort to combat the coronavirus, the Trump administration has cast a wide net, soliciting ideas from industry leaders, family-connected doctors, foreign officials, TV personalities, and fresh-out-of-college consultants to help solve crises around testing and medical supplies. They also set up an email tipline, on the off chance that someone might send a proverbial silver bullet. Little did they expect that one of Donald Trump’s exes would use it.

During the pandemic, Marla Maples, an actress and the president’s second wife, has stayed in touch with a coterie of friends and informal advisers, with whom she has traded tidbits and medical advice on how to combat the deadly virus. In recent weeks, she has quietly transmitted some of those ideas to the Trump White House, in an effort to get them in front of the president—her ex-husband—and senior staffers, two Trump administration officials familiar with the outreach tell The Daily Beast.

It is unclear if any of these Maples-approved, pandemic-related tips have landed on President Trump’s desk. And it’s not clear which specific tips from her inner circle she has relayed to the Trump team. One of the officials said they first became aware of Maples’ leads after realizing her name had popped up on the “Covid Mail” tipline, an internal White House email account that is regularly accessed by a small group of Trump officials. “[Marla] is one of many Americans trying to be helpful in these tough times,” the second Trump administration official said. “Absolutely nothing wrong with that.”

The White House set up “Covid Mail” to field suggestions and questions from “friends and family,” as well as from American health professionals and private-sector envoys, who are trying to get information on supplies and treatments to the West Wing and federal agencies. According to The Washington Post, which first reported on the system last month, “some officials have privately worried that these [Covid Mail] missives receive priority and distract from more crucial scientific pursuits” regarding the coronavirus.

[From The Daily Beast]

Judging from Marla’s social media, she’s very much into “wellness,” holistic medicine and New Age spirituality. I would imagine that she’s leaving tips at the White House covid-hotline about that kind of stuff – “prayer can cure viruses” and “maybe this crystal will help.”

Mary-Kate Olsen Leaving Paris With Her Husband Olivier Sarkozy

Mary-Kate Olsen finally got to file her divorce papers this week, after trying and failing to file for an emergency divorce. So good for her. Meanwhile, Page Six had a lengthy piece this weekend about Mary-Kate and Olivier Sarkozy’s estranged marriage and chaotic divorce filing drama. MK apparently tried to file for divorce in April but the paperwork couldn’t go through because of the pandemic. She then petitioned for an emergency divorce filing and that was tossed out again a few weeks back. Everything we’ve heard about their marriage and estrangement has emphasized the simple fact that they were a bad match from the start. So what else? Page Six threw together some old stuff with some new, and here are some highlights:

Why this has been so public: Mary-Kate Olsen intended to keep her blockbuster divorce documents a secret, but the coronavirus shattered her privacy. The papers, filed on May 14 were meant to be sealed, as is usual in such sensitive matters, legal sources familiar with the situation told The Post. However, with New York State Supreme Courts closed, they went into an e-filing system — meaning they were not automatically sealed. For Mary-Kate, who cherishes privacy above everything, having her divorce go public has been “extremely difficult,” according to a fashion source who has worked with her.

Olivier cancelled the lease on their Gramercy Park apartment: Emails added to the court documents by Sarkozy reveal that Olivier has requested building management for permission to move his things out, but so far been denied because of the pandemic lockdown. “The apartment is just sitting there,” a source who knows Olivier said. MK is currently out east with her sister and friends, Olivier remains in Manhattan with family. “Mary-Kate is okay,” said the fashion source. “But it would not have been her decision to end a marriage and move during a pandemic.”

Why MK was with an older man: Michael Pagnotta, who was Mary-Kate and Ashley’s publicist for 10 years, told The Post: “I never found their relationship strange. The girls grew up around older, successful men from a very early age because they were so young when they started in [show] business. Both Ashley and Mary-Kate were used to dealing with older, decisive people who became very influential in their lives and careers and who they saw as peers. I can understand why Mary-Kate would be with a guy like him.”

Whether MK really wants kids: This past week, reports surfaced that Mary-Kate and Olivier split because of her desire to have children, but the fashion source is skeptical and said, “I’m not so sure about that. All I know is that Mary-Kate loves Olivier’s kids.”

The prenup & money: As with his marriage to Charlotte, Olivier also signed a prenup with Mary-Kate. According to the court documents, she has asked for a judge to uphold it and for Sarkozy to pay her medical and dental bills. But Mary-Kate is hardly hurting for money. “The Olsens have as much money as Sarkozy does, maybe more,” said the fashion source. “Both of the girls have a lot of confidence in themselves and in business. Mary-Kate is very strong, both she and Ashley are. These girls are nothing like you expect them to be. Mary-Kate will survive.”

Again, Olivier is very French: Even though Sarkozy hasn’t lived in France for decades and isn’t that close to his half-brother, he is still very much a Frenchman at heart. “He sees himself as the alpha male,” the Paris source said. “He will get even more French as he fights her. They can turn cold very fast on their wives once the relationship is over.”

[From Page Six]

I’ve seen some French peeps in the comments arguing that Not All French Men want stay-at-home wives, and I’m sure they will argue that not all French men “turn cold” on their estranged wives during a divorce. I don’t think entire nationalities can be painted with such a broad brush either, but I also think Olivier sounds like an a–hole and I don’t think he understands that the American media will completely take Mary-Kate’s side just out of patriotism. As for the rest of it… I can understand how MK has always been around older people throughout her life and career, and she probably saw Olivier as a very stabilizing and comforting force for a time. But then sh-t got real.

Happy belated Memorial Day. Memorial Day in the US, for anyone who doesn’t know, is a nationally observed holiday to honor those who have died while serving this country in the military. Many of those we honor died on the battlefield defending the rights and beliefs laid out in the Constitution of the United States of America. To honor those brave men and women this year, in the midst of a pandemic that has claimed the lives of almost 100,000 Americans, many flooded beaches, water parks and regular parks, without masks, not adhering to social distancing, and endangering everyone around them. The photos of the mass gatherings were met with disgust by many of us, including those currently risking their lives while serving their country: the frontline workers.

As states across the country begin reopening during the Memorial Day weekend, many are flocking to beaches, restaurants and bars in large numbers, despite pandemic warnings.

Beaches have seen an influx of visitors, as many people pack the beaches in Texas, Florida and more coasts while observing the summer holiday.

“I have never seen this many umbrellas,” Tiffany Mathers, 44, told the Tampa Bay Times after stopping by the Madeira Beach, which is located across the street from her home. “This is not social-distancing at all. There are way too many people.”

Mathers added that she felt awkward asking people to move further away from her to maintain social distancing when setting up towels and chairs nearby.

“I don’t want to be ugly to visitors,” she said, as many of the people she met on the beach appeared to have come in from out of town. “But I feel like we’ve been educated for too long about social-distancing for it to be this way.”

Similarly, a video shared by Scott Pasmore, an anchor for CNN affiliate KTVK, showed hundreds of people packing bars and pools while partying together at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.

“No covid concerns at the lake of the ozarks #loto,” Pasmore captioned the video, which was filmed at Backwater Jacks Bar & Grill in Osage Beach on Saturday.

The bar announced the launch of their summer party called “Zero Ducks Given Pool Party” on Facebook, sharing that they had “worked with and taken the advice of government officials and management teams and will be following social distancing guidelines.”

Dr. Stephen M. Hahn issued the warning on Twitter, writing that the deadly virus “is not yet contained.”

“With the country starting to open up this holiday weekend, I again remind everyone that the coronavirus is not yet contained,” he shared. “It is up to every individual to protect themselves and their community. Social distancing, hand washing and wearing masks protect us all.”

[From People]

I know how hard it is to figure all of this out. It would be terribly frustrating to head to a beach only to have to leave because there was no safe spot six feet from others in every direction. Nobody said reopening would be easy. But it will take cooperation and sacrifice from all of us. But, as witnessed in this article and by examples like this public ousting of a women in a Target who refused to wear a mask, people are starting to come together against those who think their indignation is enough to protect them against a virus that has killed close to 350,000 people worldwide.

Before my husband’s university locked down, his boss told the department to start preparing for COVID to get personal, meaning that eventually, we would all likely have a name we can put to a COVID death. Last week I was accused of Isolation Shaming because I didn’t think Amanda Stanton was setting the right example by bragging about driving from So Cal to Arizona for a haircut. Tomorrow, they will take a very dear friend off her ventilator to see if there is any hope of her breathing on her own, something she is not currently responding to. There is a Do Not Resuscitate order in place. She is unconscious and alone, unaware of the devoted hospital staff that surrounds her. So yeah, I might Isolation Shame on occasion. But I will also do my part of sticking to pandemic precautions so that I don’t ever again have to pray to a God I stopped believing in to save a good person from such a lonely death.
