Britain's Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge stands alongside Dr John Tweddle as she hold a piece of meteorite at The Natural History Museum in London, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019. The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the Museum, visited the Natural History Museum'

Last year, the British tabloids latched onto this idea that the Duchess of Sussex was a “diva” and everyone hated her and the evidence used was a “high turnover” among staffers. It never made any sense, because there’s always a high turnover, no matter which royal figure you’re talking about. No one works for royalty to get rich or because it’s some great gig – people do it for the prestige of working for royalty, and the ability to parlay that prestige into a better paying gig after a few years. Prince Charles, Prince William, Duchess Kate, even the Queen – they all have high staff turnovers. I guess the Daily Mail is trying to make up to the Sussexes though, because they’re pointing out that Duchess Kate fired one of HER staffers rather suddenly:

The Duchess of Cambridge has made one of her most loyal aides redundant after the newlywed returned from her honeymoon. Sophie Agnew, 32, had worked for Kate for seven years and her role has been made redundant following the split of the Sussex and Cambridge households, Palace sources claim. Like Kate, Sophie is a St Andrews history of art graduate, and was put in charge of the Duchess’s personal assistants. She recently tied the knot to insurance company director Stuart Hill and the timing of the decision has created further unease.

‘Sophie worked so hard for Kate,’ one of her friends told the Daily Mail. ‘She loved her job and made a lot of sacrifices. The timing of the redundancy is said to have added to the disquiet. ‘Sophie has only just got married and returned from her honeymoon,’ the friend added.

The aide was spotted in 2016 carrying a Longchamp pilage bag and a suit cover, bearing William’s cipher, embroidered by British company The English Room, as the Cambridges arrived for their one-week tour of India and Bhutan. She also joined the couple on their 2014 trip to Australia and New Zealand and has regularly been spotted by Kate’s side.

The Duchess’s private secretary, Rebecca Deacon, quit in 2017. Often seen standing discreetly behind her royal boss during engagements, Miss Deacon played an important role during the Duke and Duchess’ wedding.

‘It is true that Sophie has left after seven years of service,’ a senior source confirmed. ‘Her role has been made redundant as a result of the split of the households. She will not be replaced.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Rebecca Deacon was super-loyal and I think she just genuinely left to get married and start a family. I would find Sophie Agnew’s dismissal very questionable if Kate had done it under the presumption that Sophie was going to get pregnant soon as well – that would be pregnancy discrimination, which absolutely still happens. But… was that what really happened? I don’t know. It feels like the Sussexes and Cambridges have been shuffling their separate offices so much this year, it’s possible that Kate fired Sophie because she truly didn’t need her anymore, and the timing (post-honeymoon) was a coincidence. What IS clear is that Sophie must be kind of pissed that she was let go, thus the unnamed sources dishing to the Daily Mail.

The ASPCA reports that every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals end up in shelters in the United States. Reading stories about people adopting from shelters always makes me happy. Here’s one more: A member of Lizzo’s crew just adopted a fur baby after the singer and her crew spent some time with rescue dogs while on tour in Wisconsin:

During a stop in Madison, the “Truth Hurts” singer and her team got together with adoptable puppies from Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsin ? a nonprofit that finds homes for dogs, cats and small animals like rabbits.

One especially lucky puppy not only got to meet Lizzo, she also got a new home out of the visit, the organization wrote in a Friday Facebook post.

“Some very lucky Underdog puppies had the opportunity to hang out with Lizzo before her show at The Sylvee yesterday,” the post read, alongside a photo of Lizzo and a puppy relaxing on a bed. “And we’re pleased to report that Saba, now Poke (pictured here) was adopted by a member of her crew!”

The group added, “Enjoy that Bling-Bling lifestyle Poke,” followed by a sparkly heart emoji.

Lizzo had reached out to the company that runs The Sylvee to see if “there were rescue/shelter puppies who could come do a puppy party” the afternoon before the show, Underdog founder Lauren Wojtasiak told HuffPost.

“So a few volunteers and myself brought six pups to the crew dressing room and everyone had fun and played with the adoptable pups,” said Wojtasiak in a Facebook message. “Her crew member fell in love with one of the chihuahua mix pups, and went through our regular adoption process to adopt her.”

Wojtasiak said that everyone ? including the woman who had been fostering the pup ? thought the crew member was a “great fit.”

[From HuffPost]

According to the shelter’s founder, Lizzo has done this in other cities as well, and HuffPost mentioned that she recently brought puppies that were up for adoption on stage during her Washington, D.C., show to encourage fans to adopt. Bringing the animals on stage, or even just talking about them, is a great way to raise awareness about the large numbers of pets in shelters and to encourage people who are considering adding to their family by adopting an animal to seriously consider adoption rather than buying from a breeder. I hope that Lizzo continues to do this. Plus, unless people are allergic, who doesn’t want to play with a bunch of adorable puppies and kittens for a little while? That’s a great way to reduce stress, too! Congrats to little Poke and their new family!

Kanye West and his family attend the Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York for his Sunday service

I’ve lived in the Bible belt for most of my life. There are a lot of truly good people who go to church and pray and really try to live a humble life devoted to their families and to their church. But there’s also a fair amount of people who wield their faith as a cudgel, people who monetize faith, people who twist religion into money-making schemes, misogyny and bigotry. I guess my point is that a lot of Christians are truly nice peeps and some Christians absolutely suck. My point is also that I couldn’t care less about anyone’s faith – I don’t think faith or lack of faith automatically makes someone a good or bad person. So, with all that being said, let’s get into this Kanye West sh-t.

For months now, Kanye has been doing this Sunday Service stuff. I think the goal is to take the Pentacostal approach (music, singing, preaching in a carnival-like atmosphere) and streamline it and simplify it with Kanye in the middle of the circus. CB and I talked about this on the Gossip with Celebitchy podcast #30 – CB thinks it’s more like a marketing/money-making scheme by Kanye, that he’s preaching the Gospel of Yeezy while trying to sell his music and his shoes. I think that the Sunday Service stuff is more like a symptom of his mental illness. Kanye has been so profoundly unwell for several years now, and I feel like mental health professionals could probably draw a straight line through Kanye’s mental illness to his political propaganda to his religious delusions of grandeur. It doesn’t help matters that Kanye is still just… an ignorant person. He’s too uneducated to really preach or have any meaningful thoughts on Christianity. But people still come to see him “preach.” Ugh. Kanye went to Howard University this weekend for a Sunday Service (on Saturday). He preached outside:

— ecstasy. (@JordanNoJump) October 12, 2019

And in case you thought this was about anything other than his ego:

Kanye really said “I was canceled, but as I stand on the lawn of Howard University, do I look canceled to you?”

— philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) October 12, 2019

Yeah. He’s still f–king canceled to me. To be fair, it looked like hundreds of Howard students enjoyed the Sunday Service. Also to be fair, there are still a lot of people canceling Kanye. It’s always tricky though – I’ve watched some of the videos from Howard and I’m not 100% sure that Kanye is actually THERE, you know? Physically, he’s present. But where is his mind?

Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum have handled their divorce with so much grace and kindness, it’s been nice to see. As a divorced person who did it relatively amicably, when I see celebrities handling things so well I feel like I know how hard it must have been behind the scenes. People don’t typically get divorced without trying so many times to make it work. It’s not happy, easy or pleasant and you don’t walk away from that without a lot of sadness and hurt. Jenna has so far been very positive about her divorce, as has Channing. Even in their official court documents you could tell they were striving to get along. Jenna did an interview with People where she hinted at how hard it was. She’s promoting her new wellness book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, which comes out next week. You can tell she walks the walk.

“It was a hard journey of growth and change,” Dewan tells PEOPLE in the latest issue. “Ultimately now I can honestly say that I’m living in a very joyful new place in my life, and I’m happy about it.”

“I always say no one gets married to hopefully get divorced,” she says of deciding to end her nearly nine-year marriage to Channing Tatum. They share daughter 6-year-old Everly together.

“People grow and they change and sometimes they don’t grow and change together. So it wasn’t a overnight thing that happened,” she says. “There was no one event. I think it was just a slow realization that we wanted different things.”

Their initial separation was hard for everyone involved.

“I was just gutted. It was so difficult for me,” she says. “It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life. What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24, I didn’t know life without Chan.”

Dewan says she leaned on her closest friends and family for support, but ultimately had to put in the work herself.

“You would never expect your life to take a turn the way it does,” she says. “But embracing it and starting fresh and figuring out what you want in life and what means a lot to you and what’s meaningful, what is going to make you happy,” she says. “I’m grateful that I now am at a place where I understand myself and what I want and I’m happy about this new chapter. I’m in a place of joy.”

“We’re all aware that it’s a new normal, we’re all getting used to it,” she says. “You can still have a relationship and just because the forms change as to who you are to each other, it doesn’t take away from the love that we had or that we shared all those years.”

Dewan hopes that sharing her journey might help others in similar situations.

“It wasn’t easy necessarily, to get here, which nothing is easy in life, right?” she says. “I had to put in the work. This doesn’t just happen overnight. But just to know that it’s possible, and your perspective on life can change. It can change for the better, and you’ll be fine.”

[From People]

That’s one of the nicest statements about a divorce that I’ve ever read! I’m really looking forward to reading her book. Both Jenna and Channing are coupled up with other people now, Channing is with Jesse J and Jenna is expecting her second child with Steve Kazee. I like how she told her story, by focusing on herself, on what she went through and how she’s moving forward. You can also hear the gratitude she has for Channing. She didn’t blame, get into specifics or even subtly shade him. That’s how both of them moved on so well. They were healed, focused on the future and ready for another relationship, not angry and trying to rub it in each other’s faces. (See Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth.)

Well…the news is out. I can’t even begin to describe the feelings that I have had since we first learned that Jenna was pregnant! I have waited my entire life for this moment and couldn’t have found a better person to build a family with. The past year and a half has brought so many things into my life that have filled me with the deepest of gratitude. A partner who radiates love, warmth, and kindness. A partner who has faced some of the hardest moments life can deal you with grace, humility, and a desire to learn from the ups and downs. A partner who is continuously growing from those lessons and who supports my growth as a person with love, unwavering support, and understanding. Jenna also brought with her one of the greatest gifts one could ever imagine…her beautiful daughter. Evie burst into my life like a supernova and has continued to burn so brightly in it. I have learned so much about parenting already from watching how amazing Jenna is with her and Evie has taught me so much about what it means to love and communicate with a child and I can’t wait to give her a sibling and make our little family a little bit bigger.

I was afraid that after the climate marches in September that attention to the threat of climate change would drop to some extent, but am surprised and grateful that that doesn’t appear to be the case. One of the stories that’s been showing up in my newsfeed all weekend is that Jane Fonda was arrested on Friday for protesting climate change at the Capitol:

Jane Fonda was arrested Friday on the steps of the U.S. Capitol while protesting against climate change, PEOPLE confirms.

WUSA9 posted video online showing the 81-year-old actress and longtime activist being taken into custody.

Fonda had announced her intentions ahead of the protest, telling the Washington Post she recently moved to D.C. so she could be more active on the issue of climate change.

She said that she plans to protest this same way for the next 14 Fridays.

“I’m going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the [Netflix] series [Grace and Frankie] and I’m going to go to D.C. and I’m going to have a rally every Friday,” Fonda said in an interview with the Post.

“It’ll be called ‘Fire Drill Friday.’ And we’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

16 people were arrested by the Capitol Police for “unlawfully demonstrating on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol” according to Communications Director Eva Malecki, and were “charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.” I love that Jane is wearing a bright red coat. She knows that she’s going to get arrested and that it’s going to be filmed, She doesn’t care about the former and wants to make sure that she’s seen. Her message is not “Look at me!” but, “Yes, I’m actually here, and yes, I’m going to get arrested, and I don’t care, because this is too important.”

Jane told The Washington Post that she was inspired by Great Thunberg:

“[Greta] realized what was happening and that this was barreling at us like an engine . . . . It so traumatized her that she stopped speaking and eating. And when I read that it rocked me, because I knew that Greta had seen the truth. And the urgency came into my DNA the way it hadn’t before.”

[From The Washington Post]

I’d not read or heard about Jane’s interview with the Post, so maybe her arrest will also draw more people on subsequent Fridays, which would be fantastic. I also love that she talked about being inspired by Greta. Given all of the nastiness being hurled at Greta from grown men who can’t handle her intelligence, her passion, and her common sense, it’s a nice change of pace to hear from someone like Jane, who is inspired by Greta’s actions. I hope the two get to meet eventually.

HRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Royal Visit Blackpool, Lancashire

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will begin their five-day royal tour of Pakistan tomorrow. The tour runs from October 14th through… October 18th. I mean, on one side, good for them for spending five days dedicated to one of Great Britain’s import diplomatic partners. But we’ve seen these kinds of tours from the Cambridges before, and the hype is always bigger than what they actually DO. This tour is already being hyped as “complex” because of the security, logistics, soft diplomacy and charitable issues they’ll be working on. Ten bucks says most of the tour simply involves parties at the British embassy and a few touristy photo-ops. I hope I’m wrong. Anyway, People Magazine had not one but TWO advance-hype pieces about the tour. Here’s part of one article:

“What happens in Pakistan matters on the streets of the U.K. It is one of the most important relationships that the U.K. has,” says a senior source.

Kate — who has developed a greater “regal” character as she prepares to be queen one day, several sources tell PEOPLE — will also be under the spotlight even more during the tour. The couple’s spokesman says they “will visit programs which empower young people and organizations that help ensure they have the best possible start in life.” Supporting children is a cause very much close to Kate’s heart. The royal’s interest in childhood development is right in line with officials’ hopes too, as access to quality education — particularly to girls and young women — is one of the U.K.’s top priorities in Pakistan.

William and Kate have also asked to meet a wide variety of people during their visit — from children to business people to “inspiring conservationists” and sports stars — as they cross the country (and cover 620 miles in the process!) next week. The week’s events will focus on showcasing Pakistan as “a dynamic, aspirational and forward-looking nation,” their spokesman says. “The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to spending time meeting young Pakistanis, and hearing more about their aspirations for the future.”

[From People]

Ah, after more than eight years of duchessing and multiple tours under her belt already, it’s only recently that Kate has developed a “regal” character. I guess that means that she won’t actively seek to flash everyone in Pakistan (like she did in India, Canada, etc). Speaking of flashing and the Embiggening, People’s second story was all about the clothes Kate will wear. Because, you know, the trip is all about the issues!

In just a few days, Kate Middleton and Prince William will begin their royal tour in Pakistan, but what will Kate, who is already an expert in the art of diplomatic dressing, be packing for such a culturally important trip? “I think this is a tour where the impact of her choices has the potential to be very significant,” Susan Kelley, editor and founder of fashion blog WhatKateWore.com, tells PEOPLE. “Textile manufacturing is an enormous part of Pakistan’s economy, so if Kate were to wear something manufactured locally, I think there would be a huge impact at a level not previously seen on tour before.”

“I think we will probably see at least one traditional shalwar kameez — the top and loose trousers look — from Kate on this trip,” says Kelley, who launched her blog that follows Kate’s fashion back in 2011. “Diana wore that look multiple times in Pakistan and I think she has on occasion looked to Diana for inspiration, while being careful not to copy her. I think we will see her branching out more and taking more risks — she has become so much more confident in her role, she’s willing to take more risks, wear new designers and she even wore a blouse backwards and it worked!”

While on tour in India and Bhutan in 2016, Kate stuck to several of her favorite British designers — Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, Temperley London and Emilia Wickstead — and while we will likely see a repeat of some of those names, there’s a high chance that Kate will also wear at least a few local labels. “There are some really tremendous designers either in Pakistan or with Pakistani roots. There’s one called Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (known as HSY) Asim Jofa, Osman, who is British-based but also has Pakistani roots and there’s a tremendous history of Pakistan fabrics with vibrant colors and patterns. I think we’ll see the color green incorporated [to represent the green flag of Pakistan], and I think we may see jasmine, the national flower, used somehow in her clothing choices,” predicts Kelley.

One thing we can be sure of, Kate’s wardrobe will be a powerful tool of communication, just like it has been for generations of royals before her. “Kate does diplomatic dressing very well and she doesn’t do a lot of public speaking, so I think she will use her clothing to send messages. It will be classic Kate: modest but modern with a newfound confidence.”

[From People]

I feel like we’re hoping for too much if we expect Kate to wear anything from a Pakistani designer. She’ll be more likely to wear a British designer’s take on Pakistani fashion. But yeah she’ll probably wear green. My guess is that even though Meghan got good reviews (not here!) for her more frugal African tour wardrobe, Kate will not want to copy that too obviously. I predict a few mass-market pieces thrown in, but let’s be real: we’re absolutely going to see Kate in a bespoke Alexander McQueen coatdress in green.

Gwyneth Paltrow is one of several covers for Elle Magazine’s Women In Hollywood issue. Of course she’s mostly promoting her work in her husband’s show, The Politician. But most of this (smaller) interview is actually about Goop, because that’s her main deal now. Sometimes I am sort of flabbergasted that this tiny vanity project she started in London out of boredom and elitism has turned into such a massively profitable pseudoscience emporium. You can read the full Elle piece here (the photos are actually quite nice too). Some highlights:

Goop may be full of bad science, but it’s been a huge financial success. As of 2018, it was worth $250 million, and Paltrow suggests it’s subsequently expanded beyond that. “That’s an old number,” she says. Is it higher or lower? “Of course it’s higher. Thank goodness. Oh my God.”

All of the jokes about how she doesn’t know what Marvel films she’s in. “I never read stuff. But it is confusing because there are so many Marvel movies, and to be honest, I haven’t seen very many of them. It’s really stupid and I’m sorry, but I’m a 47-year-old mother.”

Her character in The Politician seems like a parody of her actual life:
“The way [my character is] as a mother is most closely based on me. He was also borrowing from other aspects of my life.” One plot point, for example, involves wealthy parents paying for their children to get into the Ivy League (oddly enough, it was written before the college admissions scandal emerged this past March). “I’m familiar with that world,” she explains.

She was never ambitious when it came to her acting career: “In the ’90s, when I was coming up, it was a very male-dominated field. You used to hear, ‘That actress is so ambitious,’ like it was a dirty word.” But now, with Goop, “my ambition has been unleashed,” she admits.

Brad Falchuk on how everyone wants to see Gwyneth act more: “The reaction of most people in our lives who have seen the show is, ‘Screw you for not doing this more.”

[From Elle]

The “Gwyneth should act more” thing has been going around, notably in a think-piece column in the New York Times several weeks ago. I don’t know how I really feel about that – one one side, I enjoy ‘90s revival and Gwyneth is Peak ‘90s. On the other side, I think calling her one of the best actresses of her generation is a bit much. Gwyneth was and is fun for gossip. Gwyneth has been a major celebrity for 25 years. Gwyneth is a better actress than most people. But I feel like she’s happier doing her Goop sh-t.

As for the “I’m a 47-year-old mother” defense for why she doesn’t know which Marvel movies she’s in… eh, I kind of understand. What I don’t understand is how she can blank out on her COWORKER Sebastian Stan every time they meet!

Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe could conceivably be Oscar contenders for their weird little movie, The Lighthouse. They play 19th century lighthouse keepers who go completely bonkers in their isolation. Variety reported recently that the studio is going to put money behind Rob as lead actor and Willem as supporting actor for the awards season. They also cover the November issue of Esquire UK. I was expecting a joint interview with lots of give and take, but it’s not – they were interviewed separately, on different continents. Willem comes across as the well-adjusted artist who knows what he’s doing. Rob comes across as a bit neurotic and weird and try-hard, but charming. You can read the full piece here. Some of the highlights… just with Rob’s quotes.

Rob on playing someone bonkers: “Because you’re playing a mad person, it means you can sort of be mad the whole time. Well, not the whole time, but for like an hour before the scene. You can literally just be sitting on the floor growling and licking up puddles of mud.” This sounds figurative. He really means it. On The Lighthouse, in the scenes in which his character is meant to be drunk on kerosene (there are quite a few of them), he was “basically unconscious the whole time. It was crazy. I spent so much time making myself throw up. Pissing my pants. It’s the most revolting thing. I don’t know, maybe it’s really annoying.”

One scene in particular: “There’s a scene where Willem’s kind of sleeping on me and we’re really, really drunk and I felt like we’re completely lost in the scene and I’m sitting there trying to make myself gag and Robert [Eggers] told me off because Willem’s looking at him going: ‘If he throws up on me, I’m leaving the set.’ I had absolutely no idea this whole drama was unfolding.”

Getting cast as Batman: “It’s kind of insane. I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”

The reaction in Cannes to The Lighthouse: “I thought it was serious, and dark, and kind of sad. I was quite shocked by [people laughing].”

[From Esquire UK]

He licked puddles, tried to make himself throw up for real and truly pissed himself? Esquire UK notes Lawrence Olivier’s remark to Dustin Hoffman to “just try acting,” and it seems very appropriate here. It’s not that Rob’s method is so intense, I think he just doesn’t know how else to do it. He thinks it would be a cop-out to just pretend to be drunk or pretend to be bonkers. He thinks that would be inauthentic. Anyway… it will all be worth it if he gets an Oscar nomination!

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd celebrate her birthday at Laduree in New York City

We don’t talk about this enough: Bella Hadid and The Weeknd can’t quit each other. By my count, they’ve done at least three major breakup and makeup cycles over the past five years, right? The breakups are not some silly “we broke up for a weekend, heh” thing. They stay broken up for months, only to find their way back together, usually after the Weeknd has gone out with other women. Their last breakup happened in early August. I had my fingers crossed that Bella would have a Hot Girl Summer. She… mostly worked and hung out with friends and her sister. And now she’s back with the Weeknd. Seasonal relationship, maybe?

We felt it coming! Bella Hadid and The Weeknd are spending time together again. The Grammy winner made an appearance at the supermodel’s 23rd birthday party at Le Chalet, L’Avenue at Saks’ lower level cocktail lounge. On Thursday night, Bella celebrated her birthday at the New York City hot-spot with friends and family, including Yolanda Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Anwar Hadid and his girlfriend Dua Lipa. During the festivities, Bella was spotted taking tequila shots at the bar with The Weeknd (née Abel Tesfaye) and her pals.

“Abel met up with Bella last night for her third birthday celebration at L’Avenue,” a source confirms to E! News. “He was with her the entire night and they left together to go back to the apartment they both shared.” The insider adds, “You could tell that they were definitely in love and they both looked very happy being around each other.”

E! News exclusively revealed in August that the on-off couple had called it quits once again, with “distance” playing a role in the split.

We could roll our eyes at this constant make-up and break-up cycle but honestly… it seems pretty typical for her age. I knew so many couples like that when I was that age too – I would be so happy to see my friend finally wash her hands of some dudeface and she would be on her own for several months and she would date and have fun… then she would fall back into Dudeface’s web. Rinse and repeat. That being said, Abel truly does come back to Bella again and again. They both have plenty of other options but they seem to prefer this cycle. Whatever.
