Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leave St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle after their wedding

Of all People Magazine’s special issues, it feels like the “Best Dressed Issue” has waned in importance. Which is too bad, because I remember People’s “Best Dressed Issue” in the olden days, when they really did highlight some interesting women and their “year of” fashion. The Best Dressed Issue has now been downgraded to the point where it doesn’t even get a full cover. Which is too bad, because People named Meghan Markle/the Duchess of Sussex as their Best Dressed Woman of 2018.

The Meghan Markle effect is real. Since the American-born actress turned Duchess of Sussex became engaged to Prince Harry, Meghan quickly became one of the most influential style icons in the world — and she’s proven time and time again that everything she wears turns to sold.

From a $328 Club Monaco dress that sold out within hours of wearing it to a wedding or a $740 Strathberry handbag that flew off shelves just 11 minutes after she was photographed carrying it, Meghan’s choices have instant influence. And it’s easy to understand why; both when she’s dressed up in designer dresses and when she’s more casual in jeans, Meghan is a master at looking both regal and relatable.

“Her clothes are beautifully cut. There’s nothing bold or brash or too extreme. They are really just beautiful clothes on a beautiful woman,” says Hilary Alexander, former fashion director of The Telegraph.

[From People]

I mean… I agree with the choice, to a certain extent. It’s not like Meghan is lighting the fashion world on fire with her sartorial choices BUT whatever she wears will always make huge headlines. Even more so in the UK, where the British media’s new sport is clutching their pearls over everything Meghan does, says or wears.

Other women on People’s Best Dressed list: Lupita Nyong’o, Amal Clooney (hahaha), Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lopez (eh), Tracee Ellis Ross, Kim Kardashian (ORLY?), Sandra Bullock, Angela Bassett and Margot Robbie. You can see People’s slideshow here.

Selena Gomez covers the October issue of Elle, and yes, I did have the thought of “what in the world is she even promoting?” But I read the piece – go here for Elle’s cover story – and I get it. She’s taken a bit of a break from “Hollywood” and “the grind,” and she’s trying to refocus on other things beyond acting and singing. During the interview, she was interning at A21, a “global anti–human-trafficking nonprofit.” She chose to do the Elle cover to highlight their work, basically. And she’s also setting the record straight about some things… things that don’t involve Justin Bieber. Some highlights:

She moved to Orange County: “It’s been such a release. L.A.’s just gotten really claustrophobic for me. I can’t do any of the things I do here in L.A. It’s just impossible… I think everything in my life is being majorly downsized, in a very good way. I’m going back to simplicity. That’s always who I’ve been. It’s not me saying, ‘I feel the best I’ve ever felt.’ It’s me saying, ‘I’m exactly where I am. And I’m so happy I’m in this place.’ It’s a lot of self-discovery. From 20 to 26? Oh my gosh. I feel like a totally different person.”

On supporting Demi Lovato: “All I’m saying is, I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say.”

On turning 26: “It’s peaceful. It’s weird. The moment I turned 26, I felt 26. Right now, I feel very sure of where I am. I don’t feel erratic or emotionally unstable. Or like I can’t handle my emotions, like I used to. It’s kind of understanding myself a little more. By all means I don’t have myself figured out. But it feels good.”

On working with Woody Allen: “I think it’s best not to [comment].”

She doesn’t GAF anymore: “I’m not on the internet. I haven’t been on the internet in months. I don’t have my password for Instagram. I have no apps on my phone, no photo editing apps. I have Peak, a brain game.” (Gomez still updates Instagram from her friend’s phone, who has access to her account.) “The reason why is, it’s not real to me. I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective. As far as my personal life, someone sees me having a glass of wine? I could give two sh-ts. I’m not trying to hide. That’s my life. I’m living it the way I want to live it. But it’s about making a conscious effort—if I can have a moment to be with my friends, I’ll take that time. So I don’t have any of it. I had to make that decision.”

[From Elle]

I feel like Selena has been in a near-constant state of decompressing and simplifying her life for the past three years or so. There’s something weird about someone in her mid-20s with so much baggage and drama that she’s giving yearly interviews about how her goal is to keep things as simple as possible, unlike last year when she claimed she was simplifying but she was really full of drama. My point? I don’t know. Selena is drama. It’s who she is. She can move out of LA, she can delete Instagram from her phone, but she’s still drama. Case in point: she still can’t bring herself to say it was a bad idea to work with Woody Allen. She knows what she’s doing too.

Also: Selena got on Instagram to complain about how this interview was written, but I don’t even understand her complaint. Something about church? Blah.

felicity-jones-oct-2018-cover-02

Felicity Jones is covering this month’s Vanity Fair. She’s promoting her film about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, On the Basis of Sex. It doesn’t open until Christmas but they must be getting a jump on Oscar promotion. The movie starts in the 1950s, while RGB is in Harvard Law, and spans into the ‘70s, which explains the looks featured in the editorial. And I am here for it. Not only would I wear the cape-coat suit, I think I owned the outfit on the cover when I was in high school, including the brooch.

The trailer is below, I think it looks good. I know Justice Ginsberg’s work on the Supreme Court but I do not know her backstory, so I’m looking forward to this. Daniel Stieplemann, who is RGB’s nephew, wrote the screenplay so I assume it’s accurate and more importantly, is the story RGB wants told. Both Felicity and RGB are featured in the article, albeit not together. I’m focusing on Felicity’s quotes here, but you should read the article for a taste of RGB’s commitment to equality and how much she loved her late husband Marty. But the funniest part is that RGB was most concerned that Felicity nailed her Brooklyn accent.

On using wardrobe and props to become Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “I like to find things physically.”

On how RGB gave her confidence: ”I feel like sometimes there’s an emphasis now on instant gratification—fast, now or never and I really admire in Ruth the carefulness with which she has gone through her life and career. She’s taken her time, and that really gave me a lot of confidence. That it’s O.K. to think like that, and to be judicious.”

She likens her relationship with husband Charles Guard to the Ginsbergs: ”We’re both very, very passionate about what we do. Our work bonds us. The Ginsburgs’ marriage was how relationships, in my mind, should be. It was an incredibly modern dynamic. It was 50-50—that’s what was so unusual.”

On her confidence in her career: “It’s fantastic to feel like you’re in your stride and in your profession, and to be able to enjoy it. You’ve had so long trying to get there, and the next challenge is to then take pride in it, own up to it. To accept that it’s O.K. to feel proud of yourself.”

RGB after meeting Felicity the fist time: “(She’s) great, but can she do the Brooklyn accent?”

[From Vanity Fair]

RGB’s reaction after seeing the film was “Felicity Jones speaks the Queen’s English. Yet in the film, she managed to sound very much like me, a girl born and bred in Brooklyn, NYC.” That’s the only review I need on it. Felicity described how she practiced RGB’s walk by placing one foot in front of the other, ‘as if on a tightrope—like “a sort of ladylike dancer, steady and careful.” Later she admits, “I have studied the way (RGB) walks. I have watched hours of footage.” It occurs to me that capturing RGB physically might even be more important than sounding like her. Because that’s the thing about Justice Ginsburg, she is not bombastic in any way, but she is powerful in how she speaks and carries herself.

By the way, if anyone is wondering about the importance of this movie about Justice Ginsburg’s fight to make it in a man’s world: When I typed in the title of this movie to IMDB, the drop-down menu names listed are Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux. And in the cast list, Oscar-nominated and Star Wars headliner Felicity’s name is number three. Honestly, I think the person who would object to his name being first the most is Marty himself.

TRUMPFIFA_B284_321527_0050

When I wrote about Bob Woodward’s book, Fear, all about the shambolic nature of the Trump White House, I was filled with a sort of unpleasant apathy. It was clear that Woodward spoke to many people inside the White House (and executive branch) off the record, or under the condition of anonymity. It was clear that Woodward spoke to many people who once worked for the Trump White House but who left months ago. Very few of them would go on the record with Woodward, but as I wrote in that story: “No one in the White House wants to be there. But they want to get credit for not wanting to be there, I guess, as they carry out Trump’s unhinged orders.” That’s what I’m apathetic about: is there any moral courage to be found amongst the kind of people who would choose to work for a nutjob fascist, choose to follow his unhinged orders, and then choose to snipe about it all to Woodward? I Really Don’t Care DO U? Womp womp.

So here’s the new thing… everyone around Trump is panicking about Woodward’s book. Trump is trying to say it’s full of lies, and his henchmen are denying that they ever spoke to Woodward. I don’t care about any of that either – water is wet, and Trump is a liar who is also bats–t crazy and dangerously stupid. But the new thing is that the New York Times published an op-ed from an “Anonymous” White House “senior official.” You can read the piece here:

Wow. From a senior Trump official:

“Given the instability many witnessed, there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment … But no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis.” https://t.co/2IeV9p2nGo

— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) September 5, 2018

What does this senior official have to say?

A senior administration official confessed in an anonymous New York Times op-ed Wednesday to working to thwart President Donald Trump’s agenda out of the conviction that the president is damaging the nation.

“[W]e believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic,” the official wrote. “That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.”

n another remarkable admission, the official added that members of the president’s Cabinet briefly considered trying to push Trump out of office – but quickly dismissed the idea.

“Given the instability many witnessed, there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment, which would start a complex process for removing the president,” the official said. “But no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis. So we will do what we can to steer the administration in the right direction until — one way or another — it’s over.”

[From Politico]

Blah, receipts or it never happened. Do you work for Trump and think he’s a deranged fascist who is destroying America from within? Then stop putting children in cages. Then stop covering up for his white supremacy and racism. Stop allowing him to sit in a room alone with his handler, Vladimir Putin. Stop making excuses for all of it. Either quit or actually show us some signs of conscientious objection within the administration.

Trump and his people were freaking out about the editorial – Trump went on camera and called it an “anonymous, meaning gutless, gutless editorial…So when you tell me about some anonymous source within the administration, probably who’s failing and probably here for all the wrong reasons, now, and The New York Times’ is failing. If I weren’t here, I believe The New York Times probably wouldn’t even exist.” No, really. Politico transcribed those words coming out of this moron’s mouth. He’s just babbling incoherently: “failing, disaster, gutless, anonymous, grab her by the…”

I don’t know about you, but I can think of no one better to spend my Halloween with than a gun-toting Jamie Lee Curtis. On Wednesday, Universal and Blumhouse released a new trailer for the true sequel to the 1978 horror classic Halloween and it’s got me tingling with anticipation, even more than the one that debuted at San Diego Comic Con a few months ago.

Jamie returns to the role that made her an iconic “Scream Queen,” Laurie Strode. The new movie returns to the original movie’s timeline, ignoring the many sequels and the Rob Zombie reboot. Forty years after the events of the original film, murderous Michael Myers escapes from the institution that housed him and heads back to Haddonfield. Laurie eagerly awaits his return because, as you can see in the trailer, she’s ready with guns-a-blazin’ to confront him for one final showdown.

Halloween creator John Carpenter is serving as as an executive producer and consultant for the new project and, fortunately for horror fans everywhere, did the music as well. The script was co-written by director David Gordon Green and, surprisingly, actor Danny McBride from Eastbound and Down. Judy Greer plays Jamie’s daughter. You had me at Jamie Lee Curtis, you got an inescapable grip on me with Judy Greer.

In an interview earlier this year with Variety, Jamie said of the new movie, “We shed all of that other stuff and just went back to what made the original so great.” She added that “John [Carpenter] didn’t write most of those films, so it was just all these new people making up stories. But with this one, we just literally cut the line. Whether or not people loved or hated those stories has no relevance to this movie.”

I can’t wait to see this. If you’re already checking Fandango to get your tickets, you might want to leave your little ghosts and goblins at home, as this movie is a hard “R,” complete with violence, blood, drugs, nudity and…pulled teeth. Eek. The terror strikes on October 19, putting the “treat” in “trick or treat” for this horror flick buff.

Justin Bieber enjoys a morning out with his fiancee Hailey Baldwin and friends

For years now, dirtlipped Canadian songbird Justin Bieber has resided in America. I don’t know why. He’s had multiple homes in LA, and I would assume that he has some kind of special celebrity visa or “permanent alien resident” status. I’ve always assumed that he maintained his Canadian citizenship throughout it all. And I was right? It seems like Ol’ Dirtlip is looking to make a permanent move back to Canada soon.

Justin Bieber is following his compass. After living in the States since his rise to fame in 2008, the singer is ready to pack his bags and head north to his birthplace. “He wants to make his full-time home in Canada,” a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. “He needs to get out of the L.A., NYC scene.”

The constant attention and tremendous fame the 24-year-old has faced in the last decade has been “overwhelming for him,” explains the source. “He’s trying to climatize what a normal life should look like.” For now, that means getting away from the public eye. Adds the pal, “He feels most at peace at home.”

Joining him in the big move would be his fiancée, Hailey Baldwin. But wedding planning is still taking precedence. “They want to get married really soon,” a second insider says of the couple, who have been engaged for two months. Even a small roadblock such as the wedding venue they wanted being booked won’t stall them. “They didn’t hit pause,” the insider notes. They simply won’t settle for just anything. Adds the insider, “They want to make sure their day is perfect and exactly what they want….Justin is really in love with Hailey. He loves that she is super chill and down to do anything. Hailey has calmed Justin down a lot, and she has changed him as a man. He thinks she is his forever and considers her his best friend and soulmate.”

[From Us Weekly]

Wow, Canada will take Justin back AND they’ll take a nepotism model off our hands? Thank you, Canada. Who knew that all this time, all it would take for Justin to go back to Canada was a heavily drugged-out and drama-filled social scene in America. And do you think Hailey would really be that eager to move away from LA and her family? Well, it’s just Canada. It’s not like she’s moving to Bhutan. Also: if it meant getting the hell away from the orange fascist, would you marry Justin Bieber just to move to Canada? I would not. That’s a bridge too far.

Is anyone else reminded of the 2014 Olympics when the American and Canadian hockey teams made a bet that the losing country gets Bieber?

It’s still a few weeks until This is Us returns to make us laugh and ugly cry, but if you need a Chrissy Metz fix, the actress shows up in Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, starring Shannon Purser (#justiceforbarb) which debuts on Netflix on Friday. Chrissy plays the mother to a popular cheerleader Veronica, who helps Shannon’s character win the heart of the boy of her dreams, played by Noah Centineo. It looks cute.

US Magazine recently got the 37 year-old actress to share some fun facts about herself and I feel like she and I would get along famously. She admitted that she goes to bed too late and when she hits the hay, that “I’m a crazy sleeper. Feet at the head, head at the feet and sometimes sideways. Never the traditional way!” She says she’s a hopeless romantic and cried at “My Heart Will Go On” after seeing Titanic. Her high school voted her “class clown” and, in keeping with her “silly” personality, confessed that, “I miss building forts in my living room with sheets and dining room chairs.” I would definitely like to hang out with her.

In other This is Us news, new photos of cast members Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Sullivan taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz were released this week and they are (not surprisingly) stunning. Sterling said of the shoot, “It’s nice to be working with someone who is at the height of their craft and has been so forever,” and Mandy noted, “It was a bucket list thing, for sure. It’s pretty humbling to think she’s watched every episode of our show.”

This is Us racked up an impressive seven nominations for this year’s People’s Choice Awards, which will air for the first time on E! on November 11. This is Us was nominated for “The Show of 2018? and “The Drama Show of 2018.” Mandy was nominated for “The Female TV Star of 2018? and Chrissy was nominated as “The Drama TV Star of 2018? along with Justin. Sterling and Milo are up for “The Male TV Star of 2018.” I don’t get the distinction and, with the number of awards they’re giving out on this show, the ceremony looks like it will last half a day. Sheesh. (But hey, RuPaul also got lots of love.)

The third season premieres on Tuesday, September 25 and promises “tons of surprises.” We already know that this season will delve into the early days of both Jack and Rebecca and Randall and Beth’s relationship, and introduce Jack’s brother, who died in Vietnam. I’m sure the Pearson clan still have lots of tales, both happy and sad to tell, and I am so ready for them to return.

I was the epitome of a “child of the 80s.” I had crimped, scrunched, Aqua Net-covered hair, wore neon everything and loved the music of Journey. Steve Perry was my everything. I can’t even tell you how many times I watched the video for “Oh Sherrie,” replacing the words “Oh Sherrie” with “Steve Perry” when I would sing along with the song on the radio. (It totally works, by the way.) And, like many Journey fans, I was devastated when Steve left the band in 1987. It was even worse when he completely disappeared from the music scene in 1998.

Now, two decades later, Steve Perry has returned. He was at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame when Journey was inducted in 2017, but left singing duties to the band’s current lead singer (and Steve sound-alike) Arnel Pineda. On August 14, he released his first single since 1998, “No Erasin’,” off of his upcoming album Traces, to be released October 25. On Wednesday, he dropped his second single, “No More Crying” and somehow, it feels like 1987 all over again. On his website, Steve explained why he disappeared, writing:

“Years ago, I disappeared. There were many reasons, but mainly…my love for music had suddenly left me. I knew that simply stopping was what I had to do. If music was ever to return to my heart, then and only then I would figure out what to do,” he begins. “If not… so be it, for I had already lived the dream of dreams.”

Steve was also the subject of a recent New York Times interview where he went into more detail about his career and his return. It seems the constant performing and other demands of being a rock god got to him. As he told the NYT, when you’re a vocalist, “your instrument is you. It’s not just your throat, it’s you. If you’re burnt out, if you’re depressed, if you’re feeling weary and lost and paranoid, you’re a mess.”

If there’s anyone we should thank for bring Steve back into our lives, it’s Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. She introduced Steve to Eels lead singer Mark Oliver Everett. The band invited Steve to join them for a few songs during a 2014 concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, which kicked his return into high gear. As he recalled, “I walked out with no anticipation and they knew me and they responded, and it was really a thrill. I missed it so much. I couldn’t believe it’d been so long.”

Patty also introduced Steve to girlfriend Kellie Nash, whom he calls the greatest thing that ever happened to him. Unfortunately, after a year and a half together, she passed away from cancer at the age of 40. Before she died, she made Steve promise to keep making music. He told the Times, “She said, ‘If something were to happen to me, promise me you won’t go back into isolation, because that would make this all for naught.’”

Fortunately, Steve heeded Kellie’s words and is back, better than ever. But in the words of LL Cool J, don’t call it a comeback. As Steve put it:

“I don’t even know if ‘coming back’ is a good word. I’m in touch with the honest emotion, the love of the music I’ve just made. And all the neurosis that used to come with it, too. All the fears and joys. I had to put my arms around all of it. And walking back into it has been an experience, of all of the above.”

[From The New York Times]

Call it what you want, I’m just delighted that Steve is back. I am getting ready to dust off my crimping iron and jelly shoes for when he (hopefully) goes on tour.

Jeremy Vuolo of Counting On is speaking out and sharing that his family is now a family of four. Jinger and Jeremy are doing great, but they just added a new little one to their household. In Touch Weekly shared the details about what Jeremy had to say. The fans were wondering if they adopted a child or were expecting, but that isn’t the case at all.

Jeremy actually shared the news about it on Instagram. It turns out that Jinger Duggar Vuolo and her husband decided to add a kitten to their house. They didn’t have another child just yet, but it could happen in the future. They got a boy kitten named Jacob. They already have a young daughter named Felicity at home.

View this post on Instagram

Welp, we’re now a family of four. Welcome to the family, Jacob.

A post shared by Jeremy Vuolo (@jeremy_vuolo) on Sep 1, 2018 at 8:18pm PDT

Jim Bob Duggar actually shared in the past that during his first year of marriage with Michelle they didn’t have a pet or television so they could focus on their relationship with each other. It looks like Jeremy and Jinger are doing just fine though. Here is what Jim Bob had to say about it all.

“I grew up watching TV, but when we got married, a doctor friend of ours encouraged us not to have a pet or a TV the first year of marriage. So we did that. For the first year we lived on love. And after that, someone gave us a TV and for the first three weeks we were both glued to it. Communications dropped off, we weren’t talking as much, and we couldn’t believe the content on TV we didn’t think was appropriate. This is detrimental to our marriage. We prayed about it and felt we had to pull it out of our house, which we did. And I would say that is one of the best things we have done for our family.”

Since then, the Duggar family has been known to have pets. It looks like once Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar got past the honeymoon stage they decided having pets would be fine. Their children probably make up their own minds about when they want to add pets to the family.

Do you feel like Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo will be having more children soon? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and don’t miss watching Counting On when new episodes air on Monday nights on TLC. Maybe Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo will end up sharing their new kitten on the show eventually.
