Justified Season 6, Episode 6 recap

Well that escalated quickly. In that way that it has, just when you think you’ve figured out how Justified is zigging, it zags and the board changes. Following Ava’s attempt to run away, she, Raylan, and Boyd have a tense confrontation at her ho…

It’s too bad. Because if you’ve seen Fifty Shades Of Grey, you know he needs more finish. I’ll say it again: more come face, give us more come face! Four or five sex scenes and no climax? How is this allowed?!?

So anyway, about those rumours this week that he’s done wi…

People Magazine has another baby cover this week, but at least this time they didn’t Photoshop the baby into oblivion like they did with Christina Aguilera’s daughter Summer Rain. This cover features Kelly Clarkson and her first baby, daughter River Rose. River Rose is 8 months old, in case you’re thinking (as I did), “Whoa, that’s a big baby!” This isn’t a newborn! She’s 8 months old already. And this isn’t even River Rose’s public debut – Kelly has been posting baby photos on social media for months now. So why the cover? Because Kelly is ready to get back to work in a big way. She’s promoting her new album and the publicity seems very Motherhood Industrial Complex (no judgment, so many women do that these days). Some highlights from the People cover story:

Life changes after motherhood: “My whole life took a big 180. I never thought I was going to be a mom, so it’s very much changed my world in the most awesome way.”

She’s not just a pop star now: “I love what I do, but I feel like I relied on my career a lot for my self-worth. And now I’m more than that. I’m a mother and a wife and have this whole other thing going on.”

River is a happy girl: “[She is] the happiest baby on the planet.”

She’s at peace now: “I have a certain level of peace I didn’t know was going to come with it… My best friend always says, ‘You just want to create the family you never had.’ I might be doing that. In defense of my family, it happens. People fall out of love, and people go separate ways. People are human. I’ve accomplished a lot, but I guess the biggest success I want is that whenever I die people will say, ‘She was so successful as a mother, and as a wife.’ That’s kind of my big goal.”

[From People]

I don’t begrudge her the changes in her life and her happiness with motherhood and finding love and all that. I just wish some women would say, after having a baby, that while motherhod is great and everything, they really love their careers too. That their career is their baby too. But that’s not going to happen with a People Mag interview, is it? And I do think it’s good for Kelly that she’s spent the past eight months loving motherhood AND working on her new album.

Here are some pics of Kelly out in London last week:

Zendaya

Yesterday, I talked about how Giuliana Rancic mocked Zendaya’s Oscar dreadlocks. She said, “I feel like she … she smells like patchouli oils, or weed. Maybe weed.” This remark caused a huge backlash, and I wondered why no one called out the rest of the Fashion Police. The Vine video clip made it seem like everyone laughed heartily at Giuliana’s joke. So I tracked down the full episode. The relevant portion starts around 24:30.

After watching everyone’s full reactions, I see how Brad Goreski and Kathy Griffin enjoyed Giuliana’s ill-advised joke. The odd one out was Kelly Osbourne. She looked very annoyed and not amused at all. In the aftermath, Zendaya called Giuliana out in an eloquent letter for stereotyping locks. Guiliana tossed out an apology tweet, saying her remark had “NOTHING to do with race.” Kelly popped off on Twitter and threatened to quit the show.

I WILL NOT BE DRAGED INTO THIS! The situation is being rectified like ADULTS by both parties. I hope you can leave it to them & do the same!

Im giving everyone involved 24 hours to make it right or the world will hear how I really feel. contactually Im not allowed to speak!

— Kelly Osbourne (@KellyOsbourne) February 24, 2015

I DID NOT MAKE THE WEED COMENT. I DO NOT CONDONE RACISM SO AS A RSULT OF THIS IM SEREIOULSY QUESTIONONIG STAYING ON THE SHOW!

— Kelly Osbourne (@KellyOsbourne) February 24, 2015

Kelly and Zendaya are friends. They both modelled for Lourdes Leon’s Material Girl clothing line. Kelly gave fair criticism of Zendaya’s dress, but when Giuliana stepped in with the dreadlocks stuff, you could tell Kelly wasn’t happy. A source told Us Weekly, “he doesn’t condone Giuliana’s dumb comment.” I think Kelly was correct (even if she typed like Kanye), but threatening to quit seems extreme. She didn’t need to make herself look juvenile. Giuliana already cornered the market on that one.

Last night, Giuliana stepped up with a more substantial, televised apology:

“I’d really like to address something that is weighing very heavy on my heart. I want to apologize for a comment that I made on last night’s Fashion Police about Zendaya’s hair. Now, as you know, Fashion Police is a show that pokes fun at celebrities in good spirit, but I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line. I just want everyone to know, I didn’t intend to hurt anybody, but I’ve learned it is not my intent that matters — it’s the result, and the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya, and that is not OK. Therefore, I want to say to Zendaya, and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me — I’ve learned a lot today — and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes, how much damage they can do. And that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further. Thank you for listening.”

[From E! Entertainment on YouTube]

Giuliana seems somber and sincere and said all the right things. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and hope she truly learned something from this experience. Here’s the video of Giuliana’s extended apology.

Intro for February 25, 2015

Dear Gossips,

Madonna will be performing at the BRIT Awards tonight. She also covers the new issue of Rolling Stone which leaked online yesterday. That’s a great red lip. And a really great red nail with gold accent. And the eyeliner is perfect. So are the eyebrows.

Anyway, as you k…

Billy Corgan is either a delicious bitch or an unprofessional, whiny jackass. Your choice! Corgan is in the midst of some kind of comeback (he released a new album late last year), and he’s been performing more and giving more interviews lately, often to hilarious results. I covered an interview with Corgan in December – go here to read. He was throwing shade right and left, comparing himself to Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, John Lennon and Bob Dylan. He thinks highly of himself and he has a very low opinion about nearly everyone else in the music industry. So, when he was asked about the Kanye West-Beck thing at the Grammys, Corgan’s response was interesting.

“I’ve stood at that podium too and I’ll tell you what, if somebody got up on my stage, I would knock them out. I don’t care who it is, I would have knocked him out….[It is] inappropriate for any artist to take somebody else’s moment and make it their own…I don’t know Kanye, but I think he’s speaking from his heart…I think he really believes what he’s saying, I just think that’s the inappropriate venue to do it, because in essence that’s Beck’s moment.”

He simmered any tension that he may have an agenda against the rapper however, joking about what would happen if the two ever came to blows.

‘Between Kanye and I, it’d probably be a stand-off, but Kim would probably take me down!’ he teased.

[From The Daily Mail]

Eh, I think Shirley Manson’s response to Kanye was a lot better! People seem to be confused about the Kanye-vs.-Beck thing, in my opinion. I personally didn’t think it was any big controversy that Kanye pretended to stage-rush Beck at the actual Grammys. He was making a joke, people knew it was a joke, and everyone thought it was funny. Even Prince laughed, and Beck was into it, and he even wanted Kanye to come back up. The problem came after the show, when Kanye made some really awful statements about Beck to E! News, about how Beck didn’t respect artists and blah blah blah. That was when Kanye crossed a line.

As for Corgan… I kind of doubt that he could punch anyone out. Yeah, he’s a tall dude but he doesn’t seem scrappy at all.

Oh, and Corgan disrespected an entire Australian city this week too – he was performing at the Soundwave music festival in Adelaide, basically saying that the city was comparable to dilapidated Rust Belt cities in America, and “No disrespect to Adelaide, but people don’t think Adelaide is a cultural centre, much like they don’t think of the city I’m from, Chicago, as a cultural centre.”

I’m not a huge comic-book person or a comic-book movie person. I’m not judging those who are, but it’s not my cup of tea. I never even saw the third Iron Man movie. I saw The Avengers when it came out on DVD. I have no desire to see another GD Spider-man franchise reboot. I think Batman vs. Superman is going to be a gigantic mess (a mess that will earn a billion dollars, but a mess nonetheless). So, I’m okay with people involved in this year’s awards cycle throwing a little shade at comic-book movies. But you know who got a little bit prickly about it? James Gunn, director of the wildly successful Guardians of the Galaxy. He wrote a little essay on his Facebook:

I didn’t really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn’t seem to be all that well thought out.

As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a “tsunami of superhero films” – well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films – really, that seems like you’ve drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I’ve already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.

I’ve made B-movies, independent films, children’s movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they’ve taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.

If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we’re dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a “serious” filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.

[From Facebook]

I think he makes a good point – and let’s be fair, many of nominated actors have had parts in major comic-book franchises. Michael Keaton was Batman, Benedict Cumberbatch will be Doctor Strange, Bradley Cooper was a talking raccoon, Mark Ruffalo is The Hulk (Ed Norton too). And the reason the studios have the money to wage Oscar campaigns for their small, “important” films is because they have cash-cow franchises and comic-book movies. Variety has a write-up/analysis piece about whether people should lay off the comic book movie jokes. It does seem like it’s sort of biting the hand that feeds, you know?

Now, all that being said, there IS a tsunami of comic-book movies and I have to think that this too shall pass. This is a market trend, only it just happens to be a HUGE market trend that will probably last another decade. I came of age, as a film lover, during the heyday of the 1990s independent film movement. That was a trend too, as “indie” became profitable and commercialized and those films lost a lot of their street cred. With comic book movies, I just have to think that… all it takes is one major flop, one huge box office bomb, and then suddenly that particular model will be harshly reassessed.

Granted, I never watch any of the Real Housewife shows, but I thought the point of each franchise was to cause a lot of controversy, to manufacture drama, to get drunk and throw tables and punches in equal measure? Isn’t that the whole deal of the Real Housewife shows? To show off Botoxed trophy wives and their petty dramas and substance abuse? Well, it seems like Brandi Glanville was doing it a little too well, right? Brandi went from being a fun drama queen to the #1 villainess on RHOBH within a few seasons. And now, Us Weekly, says, Brandi is either going to get the boot or she’ll “quit” the show.

Final straw? Brandi Glanville might be getting the boot from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, sources reveal in the new issue of Us Weekly. That is, if the Bravo reality star doesn’t make an exit first. According to one show insider, Eddie Cibrian’s ex “has stirred s—t to get attention” and “it’s backfiring.”

In fact, even executive producer Andy Cohen is fed up with her antics. “He thinks her actions aren’t a good look for the show,” another source tells Us of her wine-throwing behavior.

Not to mention, the podcast host isn’t on good graces with cast members Kyle Richards, Lisa Vanderpump, or newcomer Lisa Rinna, either. Since joining season five of the hit reality show, the Days of Our Lives alum has labeled the mom of two an alcoholic. A third source close to the star, however, says, if anything, it’ll be Glanville who chooses to leave.

“She’s furious at how she’s been portrayed,” the insider tells Us. “She thinks they made her look like a train wreck.”

[From Us Weekly]

My take? This is all scripted nonsense and the producers obviously wanted to push Brandi as a villainess, so that’s what happened. The shows run on alcohol and drama and so does Brandi, so it’s a natural fit. I think it’s interesting that sources say Andy Cohen isn’t happy – that might be true. When Brandi was last on Watch What Happens Live, he did not seem pleased with her at all. But would she really leave a paying gig? What would she do instead? What could possibly further her branding more than RHOBH? But yeah, she might get fired. I doubt it though. Even if Cohen isn’t happy with her, wouldn’t the show be really boring without her?
