Prince Charles And Camilla visit Berlin To Attend National Mourning Day Events

The entire campaign against The Crown’s Season 4 has been nothing more than a taxpayer-subsidized self-own from Prince Charles. I still don’t really believe that Kensington Palace (Prince William) or Buckingham Palace (the Queen) really care one way or the other. But Clarence House launched a full-blown hate campaign against the series, against Peter Morgan and against anyone who enjoys the show. Even Margaret Thatcher’s family and friends haven’t been as upset as Charles. Charles spent decades carefully rehabilitating his image and Camilla’s image only to see it all destroyed in ten hours of streaming drama. LOL. That still cracks me up. Anyway, just in case you thought maybe Charles and his allies were giving up, they are not!

Oliver Dowden last night demanded that Netflix make clear The Crown is ‘fiction’. In a dramatic intervention, the Culture Secretary added his voice to mounting concern that fabricated scenes in the drama series were so damaging to the Royal Family that viewers should be warned at the start of each episode that it was not ‘fact’.

‘It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that,’ he told The Mail on Sunday. ‘Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.’

Mr Dowden is expected to write to the streaming giant to formally request that it adds what others have called a ‘health warning’ at the start of each episode.

It comes amid deepening concern that fabricated scenes written by screenwriter Peter Morgan are doing lasting damage to the monarchy and Prince Charles in particular. Last night, a friend of the Prince said: ‘It is quite sinister the way that Morgan is clearly using light entertainment to drive a very overt republican agenda and people just don’t see it. They have been lured in over the first few series until they can’t see how they are being manipulated. It is highly sophisticated propaganda.’

The Mail on Sunday has led calls for a disclaimer to be added to the series, amid claims it has already been watched by more people than tuned in for Charles’s real-life wedding to Princess Diana. It was reported last week that 29 million logged on to the streaming service to watch the drama in the week after its release earlier this month – 600,000 more than the British TV audience for the actual wedding in 1981.

[From The Daily Mail]

I can’t stop laughing. Again, literally no one has claimed that this is a documentary series. Netflix has made no secret of the fact that Peter Morgan is a screenwriter and showrunner. They have actors in bad wigs playing all of the characters. The reason why Charles is so upset is NOT because people think The Crown is 100% accurate. It’s because The Crown got enough of the broad strokes of history correct and Charles simply doesn’t like to be reminded of how poorly he treated Diana. How poorly they ALL treated her. It’s not republican propaganda, for christsake.

Also, in another dramatic self-own, it turns out that The Crown’s British production got £16 million worth of tax breaks from the government because of the show’s contribution to Britain’s “culture and heritage,” two things Charles cares about deeply. So, British taxpayers are subsidizing The Crown through tax breaks/incentives and British taxpayers are also paying the salaries of Charles’ staff, the same staff which orchestrated this ham-fisted hate campaign against The Crown. Perfect.

Did you know that George W. Bush had a cat? I have no memory of that whatsoever. The Bushes’ cat, India Bush, was the last cat in the White House. But we learned over the holiday that Dr. Jill Biden is apparently a big cat person, and Dr. Jill made a deal with her husband: if they got to move into the White House, she was getting a cat. The Bidens revealed that in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning. There is no word yet on whether they’ve already found a cat, but I would assume all of the shelter kitties in Delaware have been informed that one of them is about to become a Biden. Kitty Biden will join Major and Champ Biden, the two German Shepherds in the Biden fam. I guess Jill and Joe were already talking about the cat with their dogs, because Major Biden decided to have a word with his dad:

President-elect Joe Biden injured his right foot while playing with his dog and will probably require a walking boot for several weeks, his doctor said Sunday. Biden, 78, slipped Saturday while playing with his dog Major, one of his two German shepherds, his office said.

Late Sunday afternoon, Biden visited Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists in Newark, Del., about a half-hour from his home near Wilmington. After spending about two hours there, Biden traveled to a nearby imaging facility to have a CT scan. A cameraperson traveling with the press pool observed him walking with a limp. A follow-up scan confirmed hairline fractures in Biden’s lateral and intermediate cuneiform bones, in his right mid-foot, according to his physician, Kevin O’Connor.

“It is anticipated that he will likely require a walking boot for several weeks,” O’Connor said.

[From Washington Post]

Major is the younger dog, and he’s only, like, two-and-half years old, maybe three? So he’s still got a lot of puppy in him. My guess is that he was getting rowdy with his dad and the President-elect just lost his footing. It happens! An animal has never sent me to the hospital, but scratches, falls, etc are just part of pet ownership. My old dog Pogu liked to jump on me from behind and I would go down like a sack of potatoes every time. Wishing the president-elect well!

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE GIVES KEYNOTE SPEECH AT THE ROYAL FOUNDATION'S FORUM ON THE EARLY YEARS

The Duchess of Cambridge and Kensington Palace spent a lot of time putting together a glossy busy-work package with Kate’s Keen Early Years project. The “five big questions” survey was such a nothingburger, they had to steal data from other polling. The goalposts of Early Years keep shifting, and the data is purposefully vague and unrepresentative. Kate is out of her depth and she lacks the depth to do anything more than vaguely indicate to some basic-as-f–k “insights” from this giant, ridiculous scheme. As Kensington Palace releases more videos, I’m just left to wonder how much all of this actually cost, not only monetarily but also with people’s time. Wouldn’t Kate’s time be better spent actually doing real work? Wouldn’t her staff’s time be better spent rather than creating all of this whiz-bam-boom social media content?

Anyway, here’s Kate’s big speech, which clearly needed several takes as they set up various camera positions. In the close-up shots, she’s actually seething. Her accent is incomprehensible in places too.

She says “many mistakenly believe” that her interest in the early years stems from having children, which she denies. She’s basically pretending that she always cared about early childhood development, which is why she… did literally nothing about it before she had kids. In the past, I’ve often said that Kate uses the Early Years project as a cover for actually learning about childhood development and narrowly applying that knowledge to only her own children. I still think that. So… why even lie about that? Why do we need to believe that she’s always cared about early childhood development?

Plus, there are just so many fundamental flaws with what Kate is actually arguing. Sure, early childhood development is incredibly important… as is adolescence, tweenhood and teenhood. You can have issues in early childhood and grow out of it. You can grow up poor and still be a functioning member of society. You can grow up with all of the access, wealth, love and education in the world and still be a sadistic a–hole. And why *would* non-parents really give a sh-t about any of this? I’m childfree and I believe governments should subsidize childcare, pre-K, education, all of that. But I believe all of that without being some kind of self-styled “expert” on the Early Years.

Speaking of Kate’s expertise, KP posted this video of Kate answering questions about Early Years and the palace had to add clips of actual experts answering the “hard” questions, even when those questions had some really basic, common-knowledge answers. Her makeup is sooo distracting in this video.

Thank you so much to everyone who submitted a question throughout the week – we’ve seen such an incredible response, touching on so many different aspects of the early years.

This is just the start of the conversation. Thank you for being part of it. pic.twitter.com/jqqV3sMV2R

I got two cleaning products we featured recently, the Easy-Off Fume Free oven cleaner and the Cerama Bryte cooktop cleaner. Easy-Off was less noxious than typical oven cleaners but it did have a heavy smell. It cleaned pretty well and I will continue buying it as it’s not as perfumey as typical oven cleaner. The Cerama Bryte was just ok. I don’t think it’s any better than the Weiman glass cooktop cleaner, they’re about equal in terms of cleaning power. There are a ton of sales on Amazon for Cyber Monday! The Foreo Luna mini 2 is 40% off

On Friday we featured a heated massage silicone face cleanser that was on sale in a lightning deal. I bought it for myself! The Aevo is now $28 if you’re interested in that. If you’d like to splurge on a high end model, or if you buying one as a gift, the Foreo Luna mini 2 is now almost $48 off at $71.40. This has 4,000 ratings, 4.6 stars and a C on Fakespot. Women say it works great and gives a clean feeling and a smooth, glowy look. “I have used this in conjunction with a low ph gel cleanser for about a week and have not only noticed my skin getting noticeably better but also have received compliments about my now naturally glowy skin. I have acne prone combination skin and this is my new holy grail product.” “I have noticed a huge difference in the texture of my skin, it is so much smoother. The pores along my nose are also smaller and I have less blackheads.” If you order this as a gift check the package first as there are some negative reviews from people receiving returned products.

This is a set of 10 Sonicare-compatible replacement heads for under $17! They’re so much more affordable than the official toothbrush heads and work just as well. These have 4.6 stars, over 5,400 ratings and a B on Fakespot. Great sound quality and even has a cool simple design that looks good.” “I am happy with the battery life; it seems like we rarely need to charge it. Its a small speaker so it is handy to travel with or bring from room to room.”

Nicole Kidman films with Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland in NYC

SPOILERS for The Undoing’s finale.

The entire time I’ve been watching The Undoing, I’ve been severely irritated by how a professional therapist and doctor (Grace Fraser, played by Nicole Kidman) could be so thoroughly “fooled” by a pathological liar like her husband Jonathan Fraser, played by Hugh Grant. I get that he was apparently very good at keeping secrets, and that he was likely a sociopath. But once the house of cards began to come down, Grace was still wandering around New York, asking Jonathan’s friends and colleagues about what they thought, and then she ignored their answers when it wasn’t what she wanted to hear. For five episodes, we had to watch Grace fumble around emotionally, to the point where I thought the character was just a bad actor and Grace was actually the murderer.

But we got a spectacular payoff for all of that fumbling. I know we all had theories about who the killer was and why, but that payoff was unexpected and fascinating – turns out the cops had the right guy the whole time. Jonathan did it. When Grace promised her father that she would “take care of it” after the whole drama with the hammer found in their son’s violin case, I thought we were in for another episode of Grace wandering around New York in a boho coat. But no – she finally made up her mind to actually DO something. She got her friend, played by Lily Rabe, to act as a go-between, feeding information to the prosecution. Then Grace “fell apart” under cross-examination and revealed all of the sh-t about Jonathan’s dead sister, what his mom said about his coldness and sociopathy and all that. At first I was like “why are we centering all of this crap on the Grace character?” But Grace got justice for Elena in the end.

Then, Jonathan is sitting alone in the house he once shared with his family, having flashbacks about that night with Elena. We see it like it happened – he went over to her art studio, he f–ked her, Elena started talking about Grace and how they could, like, raise their kids as brothers and sister. Jonathan slams her head into the wall repeatedly. Elena comes after him with a hammer as he’s leaving, he grabs the hammer and brutally murders her. The twist was there was no twist – Jonathan was the man everyone said he was.

The whole thing with Jonathan taking their kid and Grace and her father in the helicopter and the bridge… I mean, it was a good ending. I appreciated that Grace didn’t say a thing to him as she took their son away.

Britain's Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle commemorate Anzac Day in London

Last Wednesday, the New York Times published the Duchess of Sussex’s op-ed about her miscarriage, and all of the pain and grief we’ve had this year in particular. I thought her essay had a hopeful tone, not upbeat, but just forward-looking, that there exists the possibility that we can really see each other and speak to each other and check in with one another. Many UK charities made positive statements about Meghan’s op-ed, and she was even credited with an increase in visibility for issues like miscarriage and child loss. Obviously, some people are always going to be racist, snide and hateful, but those people were generally drowned out by the sea of well-wishes for the Sussexes. Tom Sykes notes, at the Daily Beast, that this might even be a “royal reset” for the Sussexes’ strained relations with the Windsors.

Immediately after reading Meghan Markle’s brave and brilliant op-ed about her miscarriage in the New York Times this week, The Daily Beast reached out to the offices of Prince Charles, Prince William, and Queen Elizabeth to try and get a sense of the mood in their camps. While Charles and William more or less stuck to the usual “no comment”, the response that came from the queen’s office was rather unusual. While saying that they wouldn’t comment, they did, noting this was a “deeply personal” issue, a phrase which, while not exactly warm, encouraging or supportive, appeared to at least show a modicum of empathy and compassion for Meghan and Harry.

Empathy and compassion, as anyone who has been watching The Crown, Peter Morgan’s devastating portrait of the Windsors on Netflix, over the past few weeks, are not exactly the royal family’s stock in trade. What’s also important is what didn’t happen next. The palace didn’t get on the phone to friendly journalists and start decrying Meghan—as it did when Diana revealed her bulimia all those years ago—as an attention-seeker or self-publicist.

For those who have spent the past few years observing the ruthless but, simultaneously, bizarrely cack-handed way the royals have sought to censor and control Meghan, the absence of approved royal sources slamming her is a welcome development. (However, it should be said that had they even attempted any such heartless criticism it would have been met with rightful condemnation by the public.) For Meghan, it will be a relief; not because she needs anyone’s permission to speak her truth, but, more prosaically, because a “royal row” narrative would have distracted from the message of the article itself.

This is not to say, of course, that there won’t be petty quarrels and sniping at Meghan and Harry again. There will. But it seems that even the famously hard-hearted Windsors saw the wisdom of not responding to Meghan’s pain in a critical way. That in itself feels like it could herald a major reset in relations between the Sussexes and the Establishment.

The Daily Beast also exclusively revealed that Harry and Meghan had discussed with his family her decision to write her convention-shattering piece, which is being widely hailed—much as was Chrissy Teigen’s photographic account of her miscarriage—as an attitude-altering contribution to the conversation around this everyday tragedy. Friends of the couple told The Daily Beast that they had discussed the “very painful” experience with Harry’s family.

The royal family deserves no medals for showing themselves to be human, but its senior members do appear to have finally accepted that Meghan—who has complained of being deprived of her voice and silenced as a royal—has a right to be heard. That is progress.

On the bigger question of whether this traumatic event will repair any rifts in the royal family, or even put things into perspective a little, it is probably too early to say. Meghan’s camp have been guarded in their use of language, pointedly saying that the painful experience has been “discussed” with Harry’s family. That in itself is encouraging, but they have not, however, used words to suggest that the royals’ input has been a great source of solace or comfort for Harry and Meghan.

[From The Daily Beast]

Yeah, I noticed that too – for all of the negativity from the peanut gallery (commenters, tweets, etc), the palace didn’t actually send courtiers out to trash Meghan. But I think that’s more about those courtiers knowing that it would not end well if they tried to play the “we were blind-sided, how dare this impertinent American” game in this particular situation. Besides, there’s a limit to how many times the palace can reasonably claim to be blind-sided without looking completely out of touch. I also think that “not sending people out to trash and smear Meghan” isn’t quite enough for a “reset” in royal relations. If anything, this is a stalemate, and that might be the best anyone can hope for the future – the Sussexes are clearly building their future in California and the jealous, petty, hopeless Windsors don’t actually want them to come back. So a stalemate it is. Also: we’ll never find out for sure, but I would be interested in knowing when Harry and Meghan told the Windsors about her miscarriage and about the op-ed.

A post shared by Kamala Harris (@kamalaharris)

Over 267,000 Americans have died from the Coronavirus due to the incompetence of the Trump administration and Senate Republicans. Thanks to an overwhelming infection rate across the country, not only are PPE still in short supply, so are nurses. Many nurses are finding themselves overworked and under-protected as they battle on the frontlines of this pandemic. Nurses are getting hit the hardest with the highest infection rates amongst healthcare workers. As if this isn’t bad enough, there is also a COVID nursing shortage. In some parts of the U.S. COVID nurses are able to command upward of $8k a week in salary due to the nursing shortage as well.

Since we owe sincere gratitude to nurses who are the unsung heroes of the pandemic, VP elect Kamala Harris decided to call one on Thanksgiving to thank her for her hard work. Kamala posted a clip of her conversation with Talisa Hardin, a registered nurse at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Talisa testified in the House Oversight Committee in May against her employer because they were not supplying nurses and hospital staff with the proper PPE at the height of the pandemic. Below are a few excerpts via CNN:

“I know it’s personal for you, and I know that it requires mental and emotional and physical and spiritual energy and power that you give to it, so thank you,” Harris can be heard telling Talisa Hardin in a video Bonnie Castillo, executive director of National Nurses United (NNU), posted to Facebook.

Harris reportedly also spoke to Hardin about the Defense Production Act, a 1950 law that could expedite the process of giving more resources and supplies to medical staff on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic, Castillo said.

A NNU representative told CNN that the phone call lasted 15 minutes, during which Hardin spoke more about her time as a nurse.

“Talisa [Hardin] talked about how she and other nurses had to buy their own PPE because the hospital didn’t provide what they needed,” NNU wrote in a statement to CNN. “And Talisa [Hardin] said how this was disgraceful because you wouldn’t send a soldier into battle without gear.”

Hardin’s mother and uncle have both contracted Covid-19, with her uncle currently in the hospital.
Hardin, who is a registered nurse at the University of Chicago Medical Center, previously testified to the House Oversight Committee in May on behalf of the medical center and NNU, the union that she’s a part of.

“The percentage of patients under investigation who eventually test positive for the virus is very high, but our hospital management has consistently refused to give nurses in my unit the protections that we need to avoid exposure and infection,” Hardin said, according to written testimony.

[From CNN]

Talisa wasn’t Kamala’s only call. Kamala also called Tyler Gordon, the teen whose portraits of Kamala and Joe went viral on social media. Kamala’s husband, Doug Emhoff, also called Juan Anchondo, a registered nurse in El Paso, TX to thank him for his work as a frontline worker.

Kamala making this call makes these nurses and healthcare workers feel seen. Especially since Trump and the Republican Party have been so callous in their handling of the pandemic and their dismissal of the seriousness of this virus. Saying that I am angry that Iris Meda, the seventy year old nurse who came out of retirement to train nurses died from COVID, is an understatement. Knowing that the majority of the casualties of this pandemic could have been avoided if we had better leadership and people who actually cared is infuriating.

I am looking forward to a Biden/Harris presidency. I know that these small gestures will continue after they take office. I do hope that with help of scientists and infectious disease experts they will be able to get this virus under control. These nurses, other healthcare professionals and frontline workers deserve to have their contributions and lives taken seriously. I want to sincerely thank our healthcare and frontline workers for their service.

Amy Adams had a cute interview with Jimmy Kimmel to promote Hillbilly Elegy, costarring Glenn Close. It’s on Netflix but it’s getting trounced in reviews so I doubt I’ll watch more than clips. Amy and Glenn are two of the most-nominated and most overlooked by the Academy. That could change for one or both of them with this film. On Kimmel Amy was charming and down-to-earth. It’s been a while since I’ve seen her interviewed since she’s always been good-natured and sweet. I especially liked how she described her remote social life and I wanted to talk about that. She has movie nights once a week with a group of people online and she randomly Facetimes her friends. I guess most of them have iPhones then. That makes me wonder if the celebrity set are using iPhones more than the rest of us. Here’s some of what she told Kimmel and the video is below.

It takes some getting used to to be home this much. I’ve actually become.. Way more social. I have a zoom moms group we get together and sort of talk
About our concerns and cares and then I do something called a facetime people in my contact group to see who will answer.

I do a movie night once once a week. We watch a movie and then do a quiz. A group of friends invited me to it which I’m grateful for. Every week we watch a best picture nominee starting from 1960 we’re in the 80s now so it’s been a while.

I haven’t seen like movies I really should have seen so this has been great for me. I saw the deer hunter which I hadn’t seen and godfather one and godfather two.

I have a retroactive crush on Robert De Niro. I have a crush on him in the 70s. That’s what I’m getting out of movie nights not some sort of deep education about cinema but just that Robert De Niro is really hot.

Amy is one of us, lusting over young Robert De Niro. As for randomly videochatting people, I don’t even call anyone except my mom without asking first! All my Zoom calls are set up ahead of time. It’s wild that she Facetimes people without checking with them first, but they don’t have to answer I guess. I love that she’s watching all the Oscar-winning films with friends remotely. That’s a great way to structure your week. Just last week I started Zooming with people to watch a show together and I’m surprised how much I like it. All you do is queue up the show at the same time and as long as it’s not too loud you usually don’t hear an echo. I could also relate to her saying she’s more social now than before. I really listen to people more than I used to and we discuss more important things. That’s all we can do now (other than watching a show) since we’re not doing many activities together. There’s more depth to my conversations and friendships, which has been a silver lining. I enjoyed listening to Amy because she made me realize some things about my social life.

Here’s that interview! Amy says she wears wigs for Hillbilly Elegy, which she prefers because it’s easier. Jimmy makes her feel guilty about getting a smaller turkey for Thanksgiving, which is funny.
