Macron meets Trump

A few days ago, the New York Times did a *very* bitchy story about Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, aka Javanka. It’s part of the whole Schadenfreude Transition, where various media elites (or just plain elites) are dunking on the Trump family and spilling petty tea about them, mostly Ivanka. Personally, I would have enjoyed all of this energy more if it was happening consistently in the past four years. But I won’t begrudge anyone their fun – Javanka sucks and they’re both criminals. I hope they both rot. Anyway, the Times says that Javanka’s post-White House future is in New Jersey:

Javanka’s New Jersey cottage: Town officials in Bedminster, N.J., have the plans for a possible Trump family future, or at least the blueprints: a major addition to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s “cottage” on the grounds of the Trump National Golf Club, four new pickleball courts, a relocated heliport, and a spa and yoga complex. The couple had already expanded their “cottage” in New Jersey by 2,500 square feet in 2016, adding a basement and a fireplace sitting room, all documented by Ms. Trump on Instagram. The new plans before Bedminster Township call for an expanded master bedroom, bath and dressing room, two new bedrooms, a study and a ground floor veranda.

New York will be inhospitable: “In an odd way, they will even have a harder time than Trump himself” in New York, said Donny Deutsch, a brand management mogul in Manhattan and no-holds-barred critic of Mr. Trump on cable TV. “He’s despicable but larger than life. Those two are the hapless minions who went along.”

They were a–holes at their kids’ school: Once in, Ms. Trump and Mr. Kushner tended to violate the unspoken rule of the Washington private-school world, that parents with heavy security details keep disruption to a minimum, four parents said. At schoolwide events, the family and its entourage often occupied the front two rows, standing to greet administration well-wishers, said one irritated parent. Three people, including two who were present, spoke about a birthday party Mr. Kushner decided to attend with his children. He then requested the hosts’ Wi-Fi password so he could work in the living room.

Ivanka might be a GOP “kingmaker” though: “If I’m trying to keep my Senate seat or I’m running in the governor’s races in Michigan, Wisconsin or Pennsylvania, not only do I want President Trump, I want all the Trumps there,” Mr. Nunberg said. “I think Ivanka is able to live in two worlds: Trump-conservative populist and — I don’t say this in a derogatory way — Nikki Haley-country club-Jeb Bush Republican,” he said.

[From The NY Times]

Yeah, the point of the Times’ piece was to underline that Jared and Ivanka are not welcome back in New York, and that they seem to know it too. Javanka will spend their post-White House years in New Jersey or Florida or both, so as to avoid the awkwardness in New York, where the social scene is completely against them. That being said, while all of the elites are gleefully making plans to snub Javanka, I keep thinking about how Ivanka was still invited to Misha Nonoo’s Roman wedding last year. Ivanka, Jared, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the York princesses, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom and tons of other A-listers were there. I worry that despite the glee at the thought of snubbing these a–holes, Ivanka and Jared will figure out some way to land on their feet, financially and socially.

I bought this bookcase earlier in the week to upgrade my office. I want to set up my room to look fancy in Zoom calls. I also got this food chopper that we featured in August. My old one broke finally so it was time. It works so much better, I used it to chop potatoes for Thanksgiving, and I’m mad that I didn’t buy it sooner. I did nick my thumb on it putting it together. It’s super sharp and you need to be careful.

Some people have asked me why we don’t partner with more companies. I joined an affiliate program and researched the companies, but found that most had too many negative reviews. I like to research the individual products also and that’s harder to do on other sites. What’s more is that established companies, like Sephora and Nordstrom, rejected us. I think we’re too controversial or they see the site name and don’t give us a chance. So we’re sticking with Amazon for now. Please support your local businesses, now more than ever, and consider shopping local first.

Petsafe self cleaning cat litter boxes are 50% off
Amazon_SelfCleaningLitterBox
The PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box is on sale for under $80, making it $80 off! This is the less expensive model, there’s also a $100 covered model that’s on sale for $90 off. The one featured in the photo above has almost 6,000 ratings, 4.2 stars and a B on Fakespot. It comes with disposable trays that need to be replaced, so be aware that the price can add up. Cat owners say the boxes are much lower maintenance than standard litter boxes and that their cats don’t mind using them. “The litter area is way less messy as our cats used to scoop litter out onto the floor but with this machine they don’t. The smell is also much better and it’s so nice to see the litter always clean. The litter doesn’t stick to their paws so they aren’t tracking it upstairs. It’s quiet and easy to set up and change.” “Maintenance is minimal I scoop out waste once a week for two 11 pound cats and change litter once a month.”

Rocketbook, a reusable cloud backup notebook, is on sale for 40% off
Amazon_RocketBook
I take a lot of handwritten notes and prefer it to taking notes on my phone, especially when I’m on Zoom calls. It’s just hard to go back and look at my notes because I have to review so many pages. The Rocketbook is a reusable notebook that doesn’t smudge, but that wipes off easily with a damp cloth. It has an app to take photos and send them to the cloud service of your choice. You can even designate different folders and services based on the icon you check on the page. This would make a great gift for a student or friend. The black letter size Rocketbook is now on sale for $20, which is over $13 off! It comes in seven other colors at different price points. There’s a smaller “executive” size too. This has over 29,000 ratings, 4.5 stars and a C on Fakespot. Reviewers say it’s easy to set up and use and that it really helped them organize their notes. “I am so glad I purchased this product because it is perfect for school. I have seven classes and so I assigned each symbol in the notebook to my respective Google Drive folders.” “The Rocketbook is simple, inexpensive and fits my work style.” “it does what it says! It allows you to scan handwritten notes with your phone and then send them where you direct, to be stored, retrieved, and reviewed.”

They’re also half off now and are usually priced at $13. People love using them in the shower and say it’s like getting a head massage at the hairdresser. It’s also said to help reduce the itching from dandruff. “My daughter… has dandruff which causes alot of itching. Ever since using this, we have not had one problem. Her head doesnt itch anymore, and she’s able to get her hair really clean on her own.” “I love how this brush makes my hair feel more full and my scalp more clean. My scalp does not itch anymore, which is a great relief.”

It’s said to heat up fast, to be very easy to use, to not damage hair and to give great results. “I’ve used it for weeks and it worked perfectly with my long curly hair! Straightens my hair fast yet keeps the volume. Love it!” “Usually it takes 1 hr to do my hair, I was done with it in 30 mins and I did it all by myself. I’m very happy and pleased with this straightening comb.” “My hair is incredibly shiny and frizz-free, as well as being so soft. This didn’t take much longer than using a regular flat iron, but I love the results way better!”

A rechargeable sonic facial cleansing brush for under $20
Amazon_FacialCleansingBrush
The AEVO Facial Cleansing Brush has both heat and massage. It has almost 1,600 ratings, 4.2 stars and a B on Fakespot. Women say it’s a great alternative for the much more expensive Foreo, that it gives such a deep clean and that they can see and feel the difference in their skin. “The blackheads that I’ve had for my entire life on my nose are gone. I never thought this was something that could even be possible but they have disappeared.” ” I received this product yesterday and used it this morning and holy cow let me just tell you my face has not felt that clean and soft in years. I feel like years of build up and junk came out of my pores!” “After using the brush the acne has significantly disappeared and my non problematic areas look and feel smooth and healthy.”

Barack Obama didn’t do a ton of *advanced* promotion for his book, A Promised Land, but now that it’s out, he’s been on magazine covers and giving interviews with more regularity. Maybe he avoided the advanced hype because he didn’t want to distract from the election. Perhaps. Anyway, Barry covers the latest issue of People Magazine, and they conducted an exclusive interview with him, mostly focusing on his family and his marriage to Michelle Obama.

Talking to Michelle about wanting to run for president: “She gave me a hard look and got up from the couch. ‘God, Barack…When is it going to be enough?’ Before I could answer, she’d gone into the bedroom and closed the door.”

He writes about how their marriage wasn’t great during the presidency: Once in the White House, he sensed an “undercurrent of tension in her, subtle but constant” and a “loneliness” so worrisome that it could keep him awake. “There were nights when, lying next to Michelle in the dark, I’d think about those days when everything between us felt lighter, when her smile was more constant and our love less encumbered and my heart would suddenly tighten at the thought that those days might not return.”

Marital tension: “That was the truth of our time in the White House. Michelle very much believed in the work I did but was less optimistic about what I could get done. … She’s more skeptical about politics and more mindful of the sacrifices to the family.” Nonetheless, “I think we came out of it whole. There were great joys in the White House. There was never a time where we didn’t recognize what an extraordinary privilege it was to be there. Most importantly, our children emerged intact and they are wonderful, kind, thoughtful, creative — and not entitled — young women. So that’s a big sigh of relief. But, during the time we were there, Michelle felt this underlying tension. The pressure, stress, of needing to get everything right, to be ‘on’ at every moment.”

Michelle is a worrier: “I tend to be ‘uh, that’ll be fine,’ and I worry a little bit less, just temperamentally…There were times where I think she was frustrated or sad or angry but knew that I had Afghanistan or the financial crisis to worry about, so she would tamp it down.”

They exhaled after they left the White House: “We did. It was like a big exhale right after we left office.” For both of them. “It took some time to talk about how she had felt. Once [the presidency] was done, there was possibility of her opening up … but more importantly just her being able to let out a breath and relax. You know the old adage, ‘if mom’s happy, everybody’s happy’? It very much applies in our household.” Mrs. Obama “has been more relaxed and more joyful since we left office. That allowed us to just enjoy the deep love that comes with a marriage this long. But also to be friends again.”

[From People]

I appreciate that they’ve both always talked about how their marriage has never been easy, and how they’ve had their struggles and bad phases like everybody else. They are so temperamentally different, it’s kind of a wonder that they have been able to stick together for so long. I think Michelle is so grounded and yes, such a worrier, and that helps Barack from floating off. And maybe he helps her worry less. I always felt like Michelle became a much happier person, in her marriage and in life, when she became First Lady. Yes, it was an enormous spotlight, but she also got to keep her family all in one place at one time.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia visit Kulinarika at Aplungen

As an American, I have no place to judge how other countries are handling or mishandling their pandemics. America, as a country, is riddled with coronavirus. The selfishness, the short-sightedness and the absolute dumbf–kery of Americans has been revealed during the pandemic. All that being said, Sweden knows that their strategy sucked too. Sweden kind of stood alone in Europe as adopting a more hands-off approach to shutdowns and quarantines, and I’ve heard that very few Swedes were wearing masks, and there was no national mask mandate for months. There was some talk of Sweden aiming for herd immunity. But after eight months, Swedes now completely regret their coronavirus strategy. And now the two most attractive Swedish royals have the virus:

Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip and his wife Princess Sofia have tested positive for coronavirus. The pair, aged 41 and 35, are suffering ‘light flu symptoms’ and are isolating at their home in Stockholm with sons Prince Alexander, four, and Prince Gabriel, three. King Carl XVI Gustaf, 74, and Queen Silvia, 76, will now be tested as a precaution, a royal spokesman said, along with Crown Princess Victoria, 43, and her husband Prince Daniel, 47.

Prince Philip and Princess Sofia’s diagnosis was first reported on Thursday, a week after the royals gathered for the funeral of Walther Sommerlath, the queen’s brother. The funeral was attended by fewer than 10 people, a royal spokesman revealed, and precautions were in place throughout the ceremony. Tests were also carried out on all attendees before the gathering took place and all came back negative, tabloid Aftonbladet reported. Contact tracing is now underway within the royal household to find the source of the infection, and test anyone they came into contact with. The royal family doctor has recommended that all royals be tested as part of the contact tracing.

It is unclear exactly when the royal pair tested positive, but a spokesman said Sofia is swabbed as part of her work at Sophiahemmet – a private hospital in Stockholm. She has been pictured donning scrubs while treating coronavirus patients at the hospital amid Sweden’s outbreak.

Sweden is currently in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus that is among the fastest-growing outbreaks in Europe. The country, which until now has taken a soft-touch approach to fighting the disease, has been forced to rush in lockdown measures as cases have spiralled. Sweden’s seven-day average case figure now stands at 4,867. That figure is more than four times what it was at the height of the first wave, when a lack of testing led to cases being under-reported.

[From The Daily Mail]

I mean… I would think that Sofia caught the virus from her work in the hospital, then gave it to her husband and who knows who else. Swabbing every day will not catch every positive case (neither will taking temperatures to enter a building). There are false positives and false negatives, especially with rapid testing. Anyway, I feel sorry for Sofia and Carl-Philip. At least Sofia was *trying* to do some good pandemic work, unlike most royals throughout Europe.

The Duchess of Cambridge takes her landmark survey to London during a breakfast visit to LEYF (London Early Years Foundation) at Stockwell Gardens Nursery & Pre-school.

The Duchess of Cambridge created a survey so vague that the data compiled from it is utterly useless. Which leads me to wonder… what the hell was Kate’s staff doing this entire time? Kate allegedly spent YEARS working on the “Five Big Questions” survey, then she launched it in January… and then ignored everything about the survey for most of the year. Now that it’s time to pump up her work numbers for 2020 and end the year on an embiggening high note, suddenly she’s got pie charts and videos of herself posting “insights” from the survey. What makes it even worse (and yet more hilarious) is that Kensington Palace staffers are falling all over themselves to declare this Early Years project to be the greatest thing ever, and crediting Kate with developing “unrivaled insight.” It reminds me of Prince William declaring that his Earthshot Prize is suddenly “the most prestigious” award out there. The exact same energy.

After launching what Kensington Palace called a “milestone” moment in her charitable work, Duchess Kate is ready to reveal the results of her “5 Big Questions” survey after almost one million people responded to her call for action. The findings reveal what the palace is calling “unrivaled insight” which will help shape key areas of focus in the Duchess of Cambridge’s focus on early childhood development and how it shapes the rest of our lives.

On Tuesday, November 24, Kate received details of the results during a virtual briefing at Kensington Palace with Kelly Beaver, an executive at research company Ipsos MORI, which she partnered with for the surveys. In photos shared by her team, a keen duchess can be seen in an ivory blazer studiously taking notes alongside detailed printouts she is keeping in a binder.

The announcement of these insights follow nine years of work by Kate which has included dozens of engagements across the U.K., convening a group of experts, as well as privately studying the effects of difficult childhood experiences in early childhood years and how they are often the root cause for issues such as poor mental health, family breakdown, addiction, and homelessness.

With the results now collected, a Kensington Palace spokesperson tells BAZAAR.com that “next year, The Duchess will announce ambitious plans to help elevate the importance of early childhood.” Her goal being to bring positive change to the lives of children under five across the country and to also reduce the need for late intervention, which in England and Wales alone amounts to around $22.7 billion in government funding.

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

Kate is expected to give a speech today where she says, in part: “I have seen that experiences such as homelessness, addiction, and poor mental health are often grounded in a difficult childhood. But I have also seen, how positive protective factors in the early years can play a crucial role in shaping our futures.” Again, I find it incredibly problematic and simplistic to say that someone is homeless or mentally ill because they had a bad childhood. Kate will also say this: “The early years are not simply about how we raise our children. They are in fact about how we raise the next generation of adults.” Keen Kate with the absolutely bold position that children grow up to become adults. As for Kate’s plans, next year, to “announce ambitious plans to help elevate the importance of early childhood.” She’s going to keep moving goalposts until she’s in her 70s. In the year 2050, she’ll announce that she’s still very keen about early childhood development and in the coming year, she’ll announce plans to be even more keen.

Bazaar also summarized some of the findings or “insights” from Kate’s Keen Early Years work:

Exactly 98% of survey participants believe that a child’s future is not pre-determined at birth and that nurture is essential to lifelong outcomes. However, only one in four recognized the importance of the first five years of a child’s life.

The reality of life makes it difficult for parents to prioritize their wellbeing (90% of people see parental mental health and wellbeing as critical to a child’s development but only 10% of parents mentioned taking the time to look after their own mental wellbeing when asked how they had prepared for the arrival of a baby). “Worryingly,” the survey results shared by Kensington Palace reveal, “Over a third of all parents (37%) expect the COVID-19 pandemic to have a negative impact on their long-term mental wellbeing.”

Seventy percent of parents feel judged by others and half of those admit that it negatively impacts their mental health.

Parental loneliness has increased during the pandemic from 38% to 63% due to being cut off from friends and family. The increase in loneliness for parents is more apparent in deprived areas.

Across the U.K., 40% of parents feel that community support has grown substantially during the pandemic (although this is 7% lower in the most deprived areas).

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

You might say “whoa, the survey happened before the pandemic!” This is true, so why is all of this covid data in there? Apparently, Kate’s staff drew from “a ‘nationally representative’ face-to-face survey of over 3,700 people, a survey on the impact of COVID-19, in-depth research on the importance of the early years, and ethnographic research with 12 families.” So Kate couldn’t even get data from her own stupid survey, she had to copy data from another survey and take credit for the findings. As for the findings… what struck me was that “Seventy percent of parents feel judged by others”, but it sounds like Kate is judging and blaming parents for not being rich and healthy and for not having access to her resources.

Harry Styles covers the December issue of Vogue, the first man to cover Vogue solo. He’s generally promoting an album which should be coming out at some point – I take him at his word that he’s been working on new stuff, and that it will be out soon-ish, maybe. His 2019 album, Fine Line, was a big success financially and culturally. People really think that he’s the next great rock star or pop star. He has the love and acceptance of all the older rock legends too. Harry also seems to have grown into just a lovely guy who likes to play with fashion and he wants everyone to feel loved and respected. There’s a real gentleness around him, not because he’s fragile (he’s not), but because he’s just so positive and joyful. You can read the full Vogue piece here (it’s pretty long) and here are some highlights:

He loves author Alain de Botton. “I love his writing. I just think he’s brilliant. I saw him give a talk about the keys to happiness, and how one of the keys is living among friends, and how real friendship stems from being vulnerable with someone.” De Botton’s 2016 novel The Course of Love taught Styles that “when it comes to relationships, you just expect yourself to be good at it…[but] being in a real relationship with someone is a skill.”

He meditates & practices Pilates: “I’ve got very tight hamstrings—trying to get those open” and meditates twice a day. “It has changed my life but it’s so subtle. It’s helped me just be more present. I feel like I’m able to enjoy the things that are happening right in front of me, even if it’s food or it’s coffee or it’s being with a friend—or a swim in a really cold pond! Meditation just brings a stillness that has been really beneficial, I think, for my mental health.”

Lockdown for months in LA: After a few days on his own, however, he moved in with a pod of three friends. They “would put names in a hat and plan the week out. If you were Monday, you would choose the movie, dinner, and the activity for that day. I like to make soups, and there was a big array of movies; we went all over the board,” from Goodfellas to Clueless. The experience, says Styles, “has been a really good lesson in what makes me happy now. It’s such a good example of living in the moment. I honestly just like being around my friends. That’s been my biggest takeaway. Just being on my own the whole time, I would have been miserable.”

On BLM & social change: “I think it’s a time for opening up and learning and listening. I’ve been trying to read and educate myself so that in 20 years I’m still doing the right things and taking the right steps. I believe in karma, and I think it’s just a time right now where we could use a little more kindness and empathy and patience with people, be a little more prepared to listen and grow.”

He drives a Primrose Yellow ’73 Jaguar. “Me and my dad have always bonded over cars. I never thought I’d be someone who just went out for a leisurely drive, purely for enjoyment.”

His love of fashion: “You can never be overdressed. There’s no such thing. The people that I looked up to in music—Prince and David Bowie and Elvis and Freddie Mercury and Elton John—they’re such showmen. As a kid it was completely mind-blowing. Now I’ll put on something that feels really flamboyant, and I don’t feel crazy wearing it. I think if you get something that you feel amazing in, it’s like a superhero outfit. Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away. When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play. I’ll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing. It’s like anything—anytime you’re putting barriers up in your own life, you’re just limiting yourself. There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never really thought too much about what it means—it just becomes this extended part of creating something.”

[From Vogue]

I love what he says about looking at amazing women’s clothing, and if you go to the Vogue editorial, you can see that the magazine had so much fun dressing him up in dresses, skirts, pretty blouses, bold menswear looks and everything else. And all of it works on him. In Dunkirk, he also showed that he has a perfect look for period clothes too – you can easily put him in WWII gear, and I would imagine he would look perfectly at home in Edwardian or Victorian gear too. Now, that being said, there’s a nagging part of me that wants to point out that of course he looks good in high-style women’s fashion – he has the body type for women’s clothes. Haute couture is made for thin women with narrow hips and small breasts, i.e. men built like Harry Styles.

Dressing up, making music, living in the moment: This is what matters to @harry_styles. Boundaries and labels? Not so much. Read the full December cover story: https://t.co/XpEzTsnQY9 pic.twitter.com/sbVeXgtZee
