Yesterday, Sasha sent me a video of George Lopez berating a female fan after he tells a racist joke and asked me to write about it. Sasha never does this so I know it really pissed her off. I also know this because she called him George F-cking Lopez. Here’s the video TMZ posted of George F-cking…

In case you’re wondering, I am absolutely still enjoying Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement and her pregnancy photoshoot. I maintain that Beyonce understood that we were having a really difficult time with Emperor Baby Fists, and she wanted to give us something joyful, silly and Bey-tastic. That’s why so many of the photos are made of WTFery. They’re supposed to be entertaining. Plus, Beyonce REALLY wants us to know that her bump is real this time. No pillowy bumps. No collapsing bumps. No weird size-changing bumps depending on the day.

Obviously, Beyonce will likely not say much about her pregnancy in any interviews. She’s not going to be on the cover of People Magazine, talking about her cravings. But she will allow someone to inform People Magazine that she and Jay-Z had been trying to get pregnant for “a few years.”

Beyoncé‘s always talked about giving her daughter Blue Ivy siblings to play with, and now with two babies on the way, the super star is on cloud nine.

“They wanted another child and after a few years of trying, it’s a great feeling,” a source close to the “Formation” singer and her husband Jay Z tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Beyoncé’s very happy.”

And though the release of her last album Lemonade sparked rumors of marital strife, the source says the couple are stronger than ever.

“They are a power couple and they make a great team,” says the source. “They know they are more interesting together than apart.”

[From People]

“They know they are more interesting together than apart” isn’t a reason to stay married!!! Couples that stay together forever never say “well, we did what was best for our couple-brand.” As for Bey and Jay trying for years… I believe that. I believe they probably had some help with this pregnancy too and there’s zero shame in that.

Meanwhile, Beyonce is set to perform at the Grammys on Sunday, but sources tell TMZ that she’s not going to be dancing all over the place. Sources say she’s “very pregnant” and she’s looking to slow down the pace, although “there will be an elaborate digital screen onstage, which we’re told will create movement that will cover the slower pace onstage.” And she’s bringing in some guest stars too! Maybe the Dixie Chicks? Or Nicki Minaj? Or Jack White? Or The Weeknd? Oooh, I hope it’s The Weeknd. I need Bey singing “6 Inch” at the Grammys.

What else? Bey is being sued by the estate of the late Anthony Barre (aka Messy Mya) for sampling a line from his video for “Formation.” You can read about it here.

Intro for February 8, 2017

Feb 8, 2017 Author: | Filed under: Celebrities

Dear Gossips,

How many times since Saturday night have you watched Melissa McCarthy in the Sean Spicer sketch? I watched it twice that night, another 3 times the next day, and at least once a day this week. There’s something new that’s funny to me with every viewing. Yesterday it was the size…

Over the past few years especially, it feels like comedians are advocating for a more relaxed and a less “politically correct” view of their humor. As in, many comedians want to be given the freedom to work out material about race on stage without any worries that the material will go viral and everyone will call them racists. Many of the comedians on this campaign are white, although I’ve heard a few non-white comedians make similar arguments. I don’t really know how I feel about the issue in general – I think it depends on the joke, it depends on the circumstance and it depends on the comedian.

Personally, I don’t really like George Lopez. I find him messy and I think his comedy is really hacky. So I was already coming into this conversation with an attitude. Anyway, Lopez was doing a set in Phoenix, Arizona when he made a race-related joke. This is what happened:

George Lopez went nuclear on a woman in his audience … calling her a bitch and booting her from his show because she reacted poorly to one of his jokes. It went down Saturday night at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. George quipped, “There are only 2 rules in the Latino family — don’t marry somebody black and don’t park in front of our house.”

Most people in the crowd burst into laughter except a woman in the front row, who flipped Lopez the bird. And that’s all she wrote.

[From TMZ]

You can see the video here at TMZ. What happened after the woman flipped him the bird is that he lost his mind, telling her to sit her f–king ass down and calling her a “bitch” repeatedly. See? That’s what offends me. The joke about Latinos marrying a black person is just meh/whatever, but I’m disturbed by Lopez’s reaction to one woman flipping him off after she didn’t care for the joke. As for the joke… is it racist? Or does it just feel like a lukewarm version of a much better Chris Rock joke? Twitter is really divided about this. ¯_(?)_/¯

Hasty Pudding Names Octavia Spencer 2017 Woman of the Year

I love Octavia Spencer, I really appreciate her ambition and the fact that she’s unapologetic about it. If you’re inclined to just read the title and rag on her for being sure of herself please just take her quotes in context, think about what she’s trying to achieve and realize that we want her to succeed. When Octavia succeeds it will be by creating great entertainment for us telling stories which would otherwise go untold. That’s a win-win. Anyway Octavia was at the 5th annual Makers Conference on a panel along with Gloria Steinem. She was discussing her next career move and her projects include producing a show for HBO about the Jonestown massacre along with a limited series about Madam C.J. Walker, a haircare entrepreneur and the first African American millionaire. She will both produce and star in that series.

“The role I’m destined to play is to be one of the greatest producers in Hollywood,” Spencer told the audience at the 2017 Makers Conference in Terranea in Palos Verdes, California.

“I’m really drawn to stories that haven’t real been told. But I also want the movies I produce to show a broader spectrum of the people in the world. I want to see all shapes and sizes, all ages, all religions because that’s what our society is comprised of.”

“It’s terrifying because it’s a huge undertaking,” Spencer admitted. “But I want to be a conduit for storytellers. Men, women, gay, straight, black, white, Asian, Latino, Indian, native, all of those stories deserve to be told, especially if they’re compelling.”

“I choose things that touch me or resonate within my heart, and that’s what I want to put out into the world — things that will inspire, things that will educate but also allow for some escapism because God knows we need some right now.”

“I never thought that I wouldn’t make it. To me, making it is just being paid to do what you love to do. Now that could have been dinner theater and I would be happy with that,” she said. “I think we have to change the scope of how we dream. If you can dream big, crazy, wild dreams, it’s what I want every child to do. But at the same time, it should be something for you to aspire to and be able to work towards.”

[From People with additional quotes via Fox News]

I appreciate how confident she is and I really love her advice that making it “is just being paid to do what you love” (yay I’m there) and that you should dream big. The massive success of Hidden Figures should help greenlight more shows which tell diverse stories and Octavia is going to bring us some. I’m there.

As you know Octavia probably isn’t going to get her second Oscar for Hidden Figures, the supporting actress category will hopefully go to Viola Spencer this year for Fences and she has some competition from Michelle Williams. I’m glad Octavia continues to get nominated though and maybe she’ll create some Oscar vehicles for herself.

Here’s Octavia at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on Monday.

Good news, peeps! John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight is coming back this weekend! The show has been on hiatus since last November, I think. He only had to do one show in the wake of Donald Trump’s electoral victory, so… I’m looking forward to the new shows. To promote the new season, Oliver has done a slew of new interviews, even speaking to outlets like the New York Times and Politico. He also covers the new issue of Rolling Stone, and I’m just going to excerpt from the RS interview here, because it’s really long and detailed and John can talk and talk (bless him). You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

His “F–k 2016” segment: “We’d already planned the demolition, because it had already been a really bad year in many ways. It had been a f–king awful election campaign, humanity at its worst. And Prince died, and everything else. It was supposed to be a separate story after whatever we did at the top of the show, but it turned out to have direct connective tissue, so we did one story for 30 minutes, and then blew it up and walked away….We did the actual explosion the day after the election. I was so dead inside emotionally that I didn’t flinch – because I didn’t really care [laughs]. “Hmm, maybe a piece of something smashes into me and kills me. Would that be the worst thing?” I mean, he’d been elected less than 12 hours ago, so you’d think, “Yeah, I’d like to blow something up and see if I feel anything.” So it wasn’t bravado, it was total nihilism.

He was really upset about Brexit: “Yeah. I was furious. So I was not that surprised. At the moment when those first election returns came in, it was like muscle memory of watching the Brexit results all night thinking, “I know how this story ends. I think I know where we end up.”

Xenophobia in small-town Britain: “That’s why calling a referendum was such a myopic decision. That was an incredibly reckless, arrogant, self-serving move, to call a referendum and then not to energetically campaign to find a way to avoid what you’ve just set in motion. Not to have any sense of the depth of either xenophobia or resentment for European bureaucracy. It was a terrible idea from the get-go, as is proved by the fact that [David Cameron] is not prime minister anymore… I had my producers and researchers trying to find any argument to the contrary, to work against my prejudice of going into this thinking, “This is a terrible f–king idea.” And the researchers – who are incredibly nuanced in their thinking; very rarely does anything come back in black and white from them – returned saying, “There’s really nothing there. This is jumping off a cliff blind.” It was clear it would be a catastrophic decision for Britain and anyone in its immediate vicinity. To have that knowledge, and then to watch six hours of electoral returns come in through the night, just watching your country set fire to itself – it was pretty bad.”

On Kellyanne Conway’s “alternative facts”: “It’s just a framing device, an ear-catching phrase, but it’s nothing new. The content of what she’s wrapping a bow on is something that everyone has been bearing witness to. We’ve had 18 months of feelings over facts. The only thing that’s remotely new about it is the location that it’s coming from.

Whether news shows should interview Conway: “In general, it’s very dangerous to keep the old campaign architecture around with this presidency, to have an eight-person panel on CNN debating whether or not he said something. “Did he or did he not do this thing we watched him do?” There’s actually serious harm in that discussion. And, yeah. I really don’t see the point of talking to Kellyanne Conway because her language jujitsu is so strong. You know she can look you in the eyes and tell you the opposite of what you just saw happen, and she will be more confident in her answer than you are in your question.

He’s not a citizen, he’s here on a green card: “Again, normally, you would think, “I’m probably not going to get deported, presidents have big jobs, they’re not that petty.”…So, believe me, that is something that is wrapped around my head…It’s amazing, yeah, and, again, normally you could curtail the paranoid part of your brain with logic. And you can’t do that with the same ferocity because that logical part of your brain now tells you the chance is nonzero.”

[From Rolling Stone]

There’s a ton of other stuff, about becoming a father and his wife’s difficult pregnancy and how he’s too British to consider early retirement and a lot more. He sounds like he doesn’t want to even talk about Emperor Baby Fists on his show, but he knows he has to, so that’s what he’s going to do, at least partially. This is one of the ways that Oliver seems to be lacking, versus someone like Jon Stewart in the heyday of The Daily Show: Jon Stewart appreciated the nuances of the daily news cycle, and as much as he served as a critics of our political system, he also served as one of the greatest media critics around. John Oliver doesn’t really do that. Again, his show is weekly, not daily, and that’s not really the format. But still, I would love to see him devote a long-form segment to media criticism in the age of Baby Fists.
