43rd Toronto International Film Festival - The Death and Life of John F. Donovan - Premiere

Back in August, we learned that Paris Hilton’s wedding was being delayed. Originally, Paris’s wedding to Chris Zylka was supposed to happen next month, November 2018. But they pushed it back to May 2019. Considering Paris is sort of famously a “single girl” and she has had a string of relationships and engagements, I think many of us wondered if the wedding delay was a sign that this wedding probably won’t even take place. Not so, says Paris. She claims the wedding delay was because of her schedule. She also says she can’t wait to have babies.

Heiress and reality queen Paris Hilton says she can’t wait to start a family once she gets married – and confirmed her wedding to actor Chris Zylka has been delayed until next year. Speaking to DailyMailTV as she hosted the Rock The Runway charity event to support kids facing life threatening illnesses, she said: ‘I love kids, I feel I’m a kid at heart, I always will be and I love children. They just make me so happy. That’s why I always love supporting children’s causes and making a difference in their lives and just seeing their sweet smiles; they’re so innocent. I was just with my sister in New York and I was playing with my nieces every single day so I can’t wait to have my own kids.’

The fashion icon added that her busy work life means that her wedding originally lined up for this fall, will be pushed back until 2019. Admitting the change for the first time on TV, she confirmed: ‘Well my schedule is so insane. I just released my 24th fragrance, Platinum Rush. So I’m going on a promotional tour through Australia and Dubai and Mexico and Malaysia; basically flying all around the world over the next two months. So that’s stressful to plan while also having the most hectic schedule in life.’

[From The Daily Mail]

The DM also spoke to Kathy Hilton, who is apparently doing the most to plan this wedding with Paris. Kathy denied the story that Paris was going to sell the TV rights to her wedding, and Kathy said the wedding will be “beautiful, tasteful” and in a church. Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. First off, ten bucks says that the wedding gets delayed again. Either that or they just break off the engagement. Say what you will about Paris, but I’ve always sort of liked the fact that she consistently chooses her career instead of her boyfriend-of-the-moment. Deep down, I don’t think she wants to be married. Secondly, I think that if the wedding does happen, it will be a Kanye-level spectacle.

Nigella Lawson & guests on The Late Late

This interview with Nigella Lawson made me feel old! I remember when she first became a big thing in food/cooking TV programming, and I was startled to realize that it’s been 20 YEARS. This is the 20-year anniversary of the publication of her first “cookbook,” How To Eat. How To Eat made a global superstar and it ushered in an age of less-fussy home-cooking, in Britain and abroad. Nigella chatted with The Cut about the 20-year anniversary and how everything changed when she – GASP – encouraged average, everyday non-chefs to try simple recipes at home. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

What she did with How To Eat: She wanted “to own up to the fact that we can all feel stressed and overwhelmed by cooking at times… In a way, I know it sounds absolutely ludicrous, but saying something like, ‘You don’t have to make broth from scratch all the time’ was quite a big thing.”

The ‘90s chef-led cooking conversation: “I think what it was to, particularly for us in the U.K., it was meant to be the age of our great culinary renaissance, the ’90s. But it was very much taking place in restaurants. So, people started thinking they had to cook like that at home. And so really, in every single magazine article was really how to cook like a chef. It was very much the idea that people would come, and you would, as much as possible, try to copy the great restaurants, and do menus like that. And it was very unworkable…For me, I just thought, “This is ridiculous.” And what had propelled me was going to a dinner party at a friend’s house. We sat in her sitting room, at her table, and she was in the kitchen cooking quite elaborate food. And we could all hear her crying loudly in the kitchen. Everyone was getting quite awkward.”

Cooking is not about morality: “I feel that it does no one a service, male or female, to feel ill at ease in the kitchen. I don’t think it’s a moral good to cook, and I don’t think it matters whether you can cook or not. But, from my point of view, I feel it’s very much part of my independence, and it’s important for me not to think that I have to depend on anyone else for my subsistence in a way, and my survival, which food is. So, it was about encouraging people who are frightened of cooking, by showing how straightforward it can be.

Whether cooking & eating can be feminist: “I also was writing it very much from a point of view of saying to women — I mean obviously I wasn’t just writing for women — but was saying to women: “You are entitled to eat.” And I think that it’s so important, because women had been trained to be the providers of food but not the consumers of food. And that to me is a terrible thing…See, when I wrote How to Be a Domestic Goddess [2000], in a title ironic, and I was criticized for that… But I always felt it is essentially anti-feminist to disparage anything that has traditionally belonged to the female realm. Of course if it is expected of you and it’s drudgery, that is not a comfortable thing. But I certainly feel that, in a way, perhaps, it’s a space that we had to reclaim. And I think what made this easier for me as well is that my generation of friends, more men cooked than women. And so, I didn’t think I was being retrograde in some sense. And as I say, I didn’t feel it was my duty to cook. I’ve never implied that my ideal eater is a man.

Sexism & cooking: “I certainly think the way women are talked about rather than men … It’s like a capitalist thing — because men worked in restaurants, initially — that somehow if you earn money from it, it makes what you do of more value. So therefore, those who cook in their home, it wasn’t as important. And I think that in the end, men are talked about as these great creators, and women are talked about as cozy creatures, as if it’s a women’s job to provide a warm and twinkly domestic environment. And I don’t know that I think that’s true, but I think that men do command a different sort of respect from cooking generally.

[From The Cut]

I never realized that Nigella was so intellectual and socio-political about cooking, and I really appreciate everything she says here. “I don’t think it’s a moral good to cook, and I don’t think it matters whether you can cook or not.” This is a profound statement – so many chefs and cooks act like they are the truest benefactors of society because they “feed people,” like they’re morally superior to people who can’t boil an egg. “I think that men do command a different sort of respect from cooking generally.” That too is a profound statement – that somehow being a “chef” was only important when MEN did it, and if “weak” women could cook a bit at home, well tut-tut, isn’t that cute. Also: “You are entitled to eat.” That too was an important message, because it was always clear that Nigella ENJOYED eating as much as she enjoyed cooking.

Rose Byrne is an in-demand actress who works constantly and consistently. She had one low-key pregnancy and gave birth to son Rocco – with her partner Bobby Cannavale – and she even got jobs during her pregnancy. Throughout her career, she’s almost always had brown hair for almost all of her roles. I think she’s had a few jobs where she was a redhead, maybe. My point is that I’ve never seen her with blonde hair before, and I was so startled by the color change that I didn’t recognize her and I though Bobby was dating someone new.

Bobby and Rose attended last night’s opening-night party for the play Lifespan Of a Fact, which is (I think) Bobby’s new play. They live in New York and Rose has completely immersed herself in New York life with Bobby and Rocco, by the way. She’s basically Italian-American at this point, despite the fact that she’s really just an elegant-looking Aussie girl. It was at this opening night party that Rose debuted her blonde locks. Is this for a role? I don’t know – she has three films in post-production on her IMDB page, so maybe.

I’m obsessed with trying to figure out who she looks like, because she absolutely does not look like Rose Byrne. From some angles, she suddenly looks like Ellie Goulding, right? Also: her dress in these photos is Les Coyotes de Paris.

Melissa McCarthy is best known as a comedienne, but really she’s a good actress with a talent for playing cranks and borderline unpleasant, blunt characters. She excels when she’s playing someone who says and does as she pleases, so Can You Ever Forgive Me? is right up her alley. Marielle Heller’s s…

It’s Friday, so I’m covering my favorite subjects of diet and exercise. (I’m basic like that and also love hair, makeup, and fashion.) Ellie Kemper of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt recently did an interview with US in which she sort-of revealed how much money she sinks into SoulCycle classes. It costs $34 a class and while she’s cut back recently she used to go about four times a week. She won’t reveal her total Soulcycle spending per month but if you do the math that’s $544, which sounds outrageous. Ellie, 38, said she loves it because it makes her feel like an athlete. (She’s not representing them and is not getting paid for this endorsement.) Ellie has a new memoir she’s promoting called My Squirrel Days.

On the physical changes from SoulCycle
“My arms got more defined. Some people don’t like this, but my legs got bigger. I like that because I feel strong,” she says. “I feel like a beast, and I enjoy that feeling of being a strong beast.”

On the psychological changes
“I happen to love it because it makes me feel young again. It makes me feel like I’m at the club again, but also it makes me feel like an athlete. I played field hockey and I ran track, and I really like the idea that someone is coaching me,” she says. “It takes me back to a time in my youth when I was thriving. So that’s why I love it.” She continues, “And I don’t work for SoulCycle.”

She won’t reveal exactly how much she’s spent
“I am careful in my proselytizing because I think it’s not for everyone,” she says of the 45-minute, $34 sessions. And though she says she’s been hitting the bike since 2014 — at times, up to four classes a week — she won’t reveal how much money she’s spent on the trend over the years. “I’m not going to put a number out there,” she tells Us. “It’s so mortifying when you see that number!”

She’s embarrassed how long she raved to Tina Fey about it
“I felt like, Well she understands that this is the topic that I will enjoy talking about, and I felt so pathetic afterwards just for myself because I must go around talking about it a lot if I’ve made it that obvious. But excuse me, Tina Fey is an icon who does not need to be wasting time talking to me about SoulCycle.”

She cut back in 2016 after her son was born
“There are studios near me but I go to one specific instructor,” she says. “It takes me 40 minutes to get there. I don’t want to blame it on my son, James, because he is the treasure of my life — but having him makes it a little more difficult.”

“When I do have the energy, I do The Bar Method in my bedroom online because it saves a lot of time. Or I run.

[From US Magazine]

People covered this interview too, which is where I heard about it. They include the detail that Busy Philipps’ husband, Marc Silverstein, has taken over 1,000 SoulCycle classes. That means he’s spent arounds $30,000 on them no joke.

Spinning is one of my favorite exercises and I have a spin bike at home. It’s a used manual Schwinn that I got at Play It Again Sports for $199. I have bike shoes and do free spin classes from YouTube from Studio Sweat (I don’t subscribe) and Global Cycling Network. (If you want my favorite classes let me know and I’ll comment with them.) I used to go to RPM classes at the Y, but the timing didn’t work for me. I once went to one of those dark loud classes at a spin-only gym. It wasn’t SoulCycle but it kicked my ass. In terms of cost it’s free for me now or the local YMCA is about $70 a month for a family membership. I’m considering dropping it because I work out from home more. It’s so much cheaper living in the country. $34 a class is outrageous and the cost difference wouldn’t be worth it for me. SoulCycle is definitely for rich people.

Katy Perry attends The the amFAR Gala in Los Angeles

In the past, I feel like I’ve waged honest-to-God campaigns to get various celebrity women to change their hair. I truly feel like I did my part to get Jessica Biel to give up her shaggy, thick, awful bangs. So maybe I need to do the same with Katy Perry and her terrible pixie cut. It’s unflattering, it’s tired and she needs a change. Katy displayed her terrible blonde pixie at last night’s amfAR gala in LA. Katy was “the star” of the gala, and by far the biggest name there. She wore this custom Alexis Mabille gown which should be DRAMA. I guess it is drama, but I can’t stop looking at Katy’s sad hair. Okay, that’s it. The Campaign To Get Katy Perry A New Hairstyle has commenced.

Robert Pattinson also attended the amfAR gala. Rob and Katy are old friends, possibly friends with benefits. I would imagine he was there to hang out with Katy, and because amfAR is a great cause. He wore Dior.

Heidi Klum in Zac Posen – I have to laugh, she always wears the worst stuff. Or does she? Does Heidi just make everything look cheap these days? Would we like this Posen gown on someone else? Imagine this on Beyonce… I think I might like it so much more.

Beach Day, Take Two! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Bondi Beach

There are lots of new, smaller pieces of info about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they tour around Australia and make chit-chat with random people. This is quite common – a royal person will be at some event, they’ll say something to a regular person, and then the regular person is somehow authorized to repeat what the royal person said during their small-talk. During their trip to Bondi Beach on Friday, Meghan chatted with a woman about pregnancy and how Meghan is coping:

Charlotte Waverley, 35, met the couple and said she had discussed pregnancy with the duchess. She said: “Meghan told me that pregnancy was like having jet lag. She said she was up at 4.30am this morning doing yoga in her room as she couldn’t sleep.”

[From Sky News]

Is pregnancy like jet lag? Or does Meghan, you know, just have jet lag? It’s quite a time difference between Britain and Australia, and Meghan and Harry didn’t have the “mini-vacation” that Kate and William built into their Australian tour years ago. Do you remember that? William and Kate arrived in Australia, did a photo op and then disappeared for days to acclimate to the time zone change and, you know, because they love to go on vacation. As for doing yoga at 4:30 am… I mean, I’m not going to judge her for that. A few weeks ago, I was waking up at 3:30 am to watch tennis, we all do weird sh-t.

When Meghan and Harry visited the girls’ school in Sydney today, Meghan made a short speech and she and Harry spent a while chatting with the girls and giving them encouragement. Meghan told the girls:

“You guys all remind me so much of myself when I was growing up. I went to an all girls school which was incredibly diverse as well. I think being around such empowered young women, it becomes something that you all just grasp onto to understand your world. It’s made you confident, well-spoken. You have an intention set to really do something to change the world, and you have to keep it up.

[From The Daily Mail]

Every time Meghan has opened her mouth this year, I keep thinking “this is why she was fast-tracked.” Very few royal figures speak with any kind of authenticity and personal history about important subjects like diversity, empowering the historically disenfranchised or women’s rights. Meghan can handle all of this – the Queen knew it, Harry knew it, and Charles knew it.

Also: When Meghan was chatting with a young man about his part-time job, Meghan empathized with him, saying, “My first job when I was 14, I remember taking out the trash, all sorts. It give you a good work ethic, right?” Another reminder that Meghan has had jobs for more than 20 years. That gives her a different perspective too.

The Duchess of Cambridge made a surprise appearance on Wednesday! You’ll find all the details on the blog (link in bio). . ? Image sourced from HELLO Magazine

A post shared by Kate’s Closet (@katesclosetau) on Oct 18, 2018 at 4:54pm PDT

The general rule among the royal family is to avoid two competing major headlines about two royal figures at the same time. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge can make news and do events during Harry and Meghan’s tour, but they shouldn’t try to suck up attention or make any big announcements while Harry and Meg are in Australia. William and Kate are rule-followers. They did a very low-key event at Kensington Palace this week: they met with the finalists for the BBC Radio One’s Teen Hero Awards and posed for some low-key photos which seem to have only been published on social media, and through the palace (meaning the press wasn’t invited to this event).

For this low-key event in Kate and William’s home – basically? – Kate wore an off-the-rack polka-dotted dress from Whistles, which costs £149. The burgundy shade feels autumnal, and the style is very “Diana in the ‘80s.” At some point, we just have to acknowledge that Kate isn’t really doing tons of purposeful “throwbacks” to her late mother-in-law, it’s just that Kate’s style really is this ‘80s.

Anyway, this was Kate’s second “event” this week, coming after her “private meeting,” also at Kensington Palace. Reportedly, this is what Kate’s schedule is going to be like for the rest of 2018 – she’s let it be known that she’s not going to work “full time” until next year. I still wonder if Kate and William will try for one more baby, don’t you?

Some photos from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s engagement on Wednesday have emerged, they gave a Reception at Kensington Palace for the finalists of BBC Radio One’s Teen Hero Awards.
