car seat guidelines

If you are a parent, you know just how important it is to keep your child safe. From the moment they were born, parents have done everything to make sure they are not harmed. This is not just done inside the home, where many parents take a lot of safety measure to make sure that their homes are baby proofed.

The same measures are taken when the child is inside the car and traveling with his or per parents. Just recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their policy statement on “Child Passenger Safety” and have given new recommendations regarding the car seats of children.

While the full report including the technical report will be published in Pediatrics; November 2018 issue, here are some things that parents should know about the new policies.

1.Most of the old policies still stand – most of what you know about car seats still stands. First, of course, you need to make sure that the car seats you choose will be utilized properly.

Car Seat Guidelines Developed by AAP | Photo Credit: Pixabay (KateCox)

Many parents think that they do not need to read the manual anymore. Also, check to see that you are using the proper one. If your child has already exceeded the weight and height of the limits of your car seat, it is wise to invest in a convertible car seat.

2. All children under 13 must be seated at the back – one of the biggest changes is that the AAP is now saying that anyone below 13 should always be seated at the back. It’s not only the AAP who has stated this, as this is also backed up with an agreement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As the statistics show, the back seat is the safest place if ever a collision will happen, so better tell your tweens that they can only call shotgun when they turn 13.

3. Children should be seated in the car seat for as long as possible – another thing that has changed is the length of time the child should be on a car seat.

For many parents, as soon as they have outgrown the rear-facing car seats, they already allow their kids to use boosters and not the car seats anymore. this can be as early as 3 or even 4 years old. But now, the AAP has said that it is safer to keep them in the car seat for as long as you can. When they have outgrown the rear-facing seats, just use forward-facing car seats instead.

4. Children should be rear-facing as long as possible – in the past, having the children be seated rear-facing was recommended until about 2 years old. But now, after years of research, the AAP recommends that parents should only switch to forward-facing car seats once the children have reached the limits of the rear-facing car seats when it comes to height and weight. Most car seats have a limit of 50 pounds and up, so until the child weighs more than that, it is still safer to keep them in the rear-facing car seat.

John McCain’s funeral was just as he planned it: an epic spectacle of melancholy and mourning, with militaristic flourishes and good shady politics. You can tell it was a great funeral because people – Deplorables – were actually quite mad about it. Those poor, dumb, sensitive souls got “triggered” by the very idea that Republicans and Democrats came together to honor an American senator and bash the hell out of the traitor in the White House. I’m not going to talk about those disgruntled snowflakes though. This post is just the highlight reel, which – quite honestly – was what McCain intended. HE planned his funeral. He wanted it to be a rebuke of Trump from top to bottom.

Here’s Meghan McCain’s eulogy, which included these lines: “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great.”

Here’s George W. Bush’s eulogy, which included these words: “Perhaps above all John detested the abuse of power, could not abide bigots and swaggering. He spoke up for the little guy, forgotten people in forgotten places.”

And here’s Barack Obama’s eulogy, which was almost entirely a huge subtweet of the orange traitor.

All of these eulogies were widely praised, as they should be. Oddly, my favorite was George W. Bush’s eulogy. I think Bush in particular was surprised that McCain wanted him there, given their shady history.

One of the best moments of the funeral didn’t involve a eulogy though – George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Barack Obama were all seated together. Of course Laura and Barack let Michelle and George sit beside each other, because those two adore each other and have formed some kind of bond or friendship. Well, I guess Laura Bush also carries candy (or mints?) in her purse and she gave one to George. Michelle was like “I want one” and so George discreetly passed a piece of candy to Michelle:

— Roland Scahill (@rolandscahill) September 1, 2018

This was honestly one of the best little moments of the week. Just a small act of sweetness, bipartisanship, whatever you want to call it. It was lovely. I love how Michelle quietly says “thank you” and how both Laura and Barack look over at their spouses, like, “we can’t keep these two apart.”

This is just a reminder: we’ll be seeing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex twice this week at events. We’ll see them on Tuesday, September 4th, at the WellChild Awards, because Harry is the royal patron of WellChild and he attends the awards every year. We’ll also see them on Thursday when they attend the charity gala for 100 Days to Peace, which will benefit Heads Together. If it’s about Heads Together, I kind of wonder if Kate and William might attend as well? That would be interesting.

Meanwhile, as we learned last week, Prince Harry and Meghan have added to their family: they adopted a dog (or puppy?) at some point this summer, in between their travels to Canada, Scotland and Italy. And now we know what kind of dog and what they named him:

And, according to Sally Bedell Smith, the American writer whose biographies of the royals are best-sellers, they’ve adopted a new dog – a black Labrador named Oz – who joins her rescue beagle Guy as part of the Sussex family. With a much-anticipated international tour Down Under coming up in the fall, it looks like the future is gold for Their Royal Highnesses.

[From USA Today]

I LOVE that they got a black dog. I had a black dog for years (may he rest in peace) and people always thought he was going to be so fearsome because of his coloring. Too many people overlook black dogs and black cats in shelters too, they’re seen as “difficult to adopt” and there are superstitions about black cats too (I have a black kitten!). I don’t know if Oz was a rescue or if they got him from a breeder or what. But Oz Sussex is a lucky puppy. I hope he gets along with his big brother Guy.

kylie jenner vogue aust

Kylie Jenner covers the September issue of Vogue Australia, and I honestly can’t tell if they CGI’d her face, or if her face just looks like CGI all the time now. Which is it? A little of column A, a little of column B? I think I might be getting thrown off because Kylie has stopped with the lip injections, so she no longer looks so cartoonish in that one aspect, but it’s still going to take some getting used to. As for the interview… guess who interviewed Kylie? Why, her sister Kendall, of course. Because I guess no celebrity will agree to an interview anymore unless it can be conducted by their friend or sister. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

How her life changed when she became a mom: “I don’t think my life has changed since becoming a mum: I think the way I look at life has changed since becoming a mum. I think more of the future. I used to live each day as it came, and now I look at the future more. I actually feel like I love myself more after I had Stormi. And I’m trying to be … I mean, I’m already a positive person, but just having fun, being positive.”

How Kylie Cosmetics started: “My Lip Kits started with number one, my obsession with make-up and lips specifically and just how I took my insecurity with my lips and turned it into my business model. Something I just became obsessed with was lips and lipstick, and how wearing lipstick made me feel. I just loved bigger lips, and I just got obsessed. To this day, I can’t leave the house without lipstick. So, I just think I’m obsessed with doing my make-up and watching tutorials and that’s kind of how Kylie Cosmetics started.”

Whether her insecurity about her lips drove her to start the company: “I think I would’ve done the same thing, because my insecurity with my lips didn’t stem from people saying anything. I don’t even think anyone commented on my lips. We all have insecurities, right? Nobody’s perfect, and that’s my thing.”

How she thinks about beauty now that she has a daughter: “I feel like having a daughter, and thinking about beauty in the future, has definitely changed me, and I feel like it has made me love myself more and accept everything about me. Even my ears, I always felt like they stuck out too far, and she [Stormi] has the same ears as me and so now I love my ears. It’s just having a different outlook on life so I can pass that on to her. I want to be an example for her. What kind of example would I be if she said she didn’t like her ears, and then I didn’t like them either? I just want to teach her that. I’m trying to love myself more.”

Is there some things that money can’t buy? “I bought myself my dream car, the LaFerrari, and the excitement and the happiness lasted not that long. I have my dream house and the car I want, and I just realised early that those aren’t the things that make me happy. It’s a different kind of happiness. I just feel like some people get lost, and strive their whole life for materialistic things and then you realise that it’s not everything. I want to appreciate and be comfortable in the place that I am, and just find happiness in my friends and my family.”

[From Vogue Australia]

“I just feel like some people get lost, and strive their whole life for materialistic things and then you realise that it’s not everything.” Don’t get me wrong, the message is fine. But the messenger? YIKES. Kylie is one part of the most materialistic and fame-hungry family on the planet. Their entire brand is built on materialism and superficiality. Kylie caters to that too with her overpriced “lip kits” and how she implicitly encourages young girls to alter their faces and bodies. Plus, I just get exhausted with rich people telling us that money really doesn’t matter all that much. Kylie’s got some Goop to her, right?

I’ll always have affection for Melanie Griffith because of Working Girl, which is one of my favorite movies. I can’t help it, I just *like* her and want her to do well and find happiness. Melanie turns 61 years old this month, and she sat down with InStyle to talk about ageing, motherhood, dating and divorce. I don’t think I’ve actually sat down and thought about this before, but Melanie has been divorced four times! Two of those divorces were to the same man, Don Johnson, but still. She’s lived a lot of life, and I was mostly charmed by this InStyle interview, except for some somewhat problematic comments about abuse and harassment:

Whether Working Girl was the proto-film for the #MeToo era. “That’s f–ked up. I didn’t even think about that. But it was one of those amazing, amazing experiences in my life. And people still love it so much. They tell me how much it meant to them and how it changed their lives. And a lot of women my age and younger say, ‘I saw that movie, and it gave me encouragement to do what I wanted to do.’ ”

Her mother, Tippi Hedren, was abused & harassed by Alfred Hitchcock. “She was mentally abused and tortured by him, so I knew not to ever let somebody take advantage of me. And I wasn’t stupid. I’m not saying any of those girls are stupid, but I was aware of what was possible. I’m sure that I had the suggestion of ‘I want to sleep with you, come over,’ but I knew better. If I think back, there were things that were asked, and I would just say, ‘No, I’m not doing it that way,’ but you had to be strong and know what you wanted. I think I always had that. I was a tough chick. I wouldn’t do something if I didn’t want to do it.”

All of her ex-husbands: “All of my husbands, my three husbands — I love them all so much, and we’re all very close.”

She doesn’t want to get married again: “I really don’t think it’s relevant for anyone anymore. But especially if you’re 60 and you have four kids and you’re living the life you’ve always wanted. Then why get married? It’s, like, I would love to fall in love and have a romance, a relationship, but I haven’t. I keep looking. I’ve had a couple of lovers but not a relationship.”

Would she try dating apps? “No, Jesus. Tinder or something would just be so tacky, I think.”

[From InStyle]

“She was mentally abused and tortured by him, so I knew not to ever let somebody take advantage of me…” Yeah, but that’s the thing: it’s not your choice, it’s not something you can claim agency about. You can’t say “but if I do this or that or if I’m simply tough enough, then men won’t harass me or abuse me.” Tons of strong, tough women are abused, and Melanie should know that because her mom was one of them. Tippi didn’t “let” Hitchcock harass her. He was the pervert, the abuser, the harasser, and she was his victim. As for the rest of it – she sounds like she’s in a good place in her life now. I’m happy for her.

Whether you are planning a gender reveal party for your first child or the third one, it is still an exciting event to plan. Gender reveal parties are becoming as popular as baby showers, with many parents to be choosing to invite friends and of course family members to their gender reveal party.

While there are some parents who already know the gender of their baby and are the ones who reveal it to their guests, others choose to entrust the gender to someone they know who will then plan how it will be revealed.

Whatever way you choose to do it, you will never run out of creative ideas on how to do the gender reveal party. Here are some tips and Gender Reveal Party Ideas on how you can plan a successful and stress-free party!

1. Pick a theme for the whole event – the first thing you should do is to choose the theme for the event. Any party, whether it is a birthday, a wedding, etc is easier to plan when it centers on a theme. The theme can be as simple as a color motif, or it can be something personal for the future parents, such as nautical if one parent is in the Navy, or perhaps an autumn party if the party will happen during that season. There are many themes to choose from. If you are having a hard time choosing, you can talk to your partner or, if you are a friend of the parents, ask them if they have any preference on what theme they would like to see for their party.

2. Involve your guests in the party – an interactive party is always fun, and there are many ways to get your guests more involved in the party. As soon as the guests arrive, you can have them take a guest on what the gender could be. You can make this creative, for example, have them choose the color of balloons, pink if they think it’s a girl, or blue if it’s a boy. Then, anyone who guesses correctly will be able to take home a prize.

3. Get creative when doing the gender reveal! – the most important part of this type of party is, of course, the gender reveals, and this is where you can really get creative. There are so many ideas you can see on the internet. The most common is having a cake and the parents would cut it to reveal the inside of the cake that will indicate pink or blue.

First of all I want to say thank you to the whole @dailyblastlive crew for participating!! I love y’all. If y’all missed it, we are having a BOY!!?? Lawson’s going to be a great Big brother!!

Another idea that is getting more popular is the Egg Russian Roulette, which always elicits a laugh from the guests. In this game. you will prepare a dozen eggs, six colored blue and six colored pink, with 11 being hard-boiled and one raw egg. The raw egg will be the gender of the baby. It’s always fun to see the parents trying not to pick the raw egg, but also being happy to find out which one will be the raw egg because it will be the gender of the baby.

75th Venice International Film Festival - 'A Star Is Born' - Premiere

Here are some photos of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at the Venice Film Festival premiere of A Star Is Born, which Bradley directed. I was waiting to see if Gaga and Bradley would do a reenactment, on the carpet, of her screen test, the same one where Bradley wiped all of the makeup off her face. It would have been an epic way to promote the movie. Instead, Gaga decided to promote the movie by wearing an absolutely enormous Valentino gown. This gown is so big and dramatic… which totally fits the venue. Venice is for drama, and this gown wouldn’t have worked in Toronto. Gaga accessorized with 9.5 carat Chopard earrings.

During the big premiere of A Star Is Born at the Sala Grande theater, lightning struck. Literally, lightning struck the theater and the projector’s bulb was blown out in the middle of the film. It took fifteen minutes to fix it, and after the film was completed, Gaga and Bradley got an eight-minute standing ovation. So… it looks like we’re going to have to weather a major awards-season campaign for this one. How does that make you feel?

75th Venice International Film Festival - 'A Star Is Born' - Premiere

Also: Irina Shayk was in Venice, as I said previously. She and Bradley were happily pap’d together when they arrived in Venice, but Irina didn’t walk the premiere red carpet with him. She wore a vintage Versace gown, and she walked the carpet with Donatella Versace. Does anyone else feel a little bit like… maybe Irina perhaps *should NOT* be seen that much during the Oscar campaign? She’s a beautiful model, and Bradley is trying to sell a movie where his character is all about Gaga’s “not a model” vibe. What I’m asking is this: does Irina’s mere presence undercut the suspension of belief required to believe in the central love story of the film?

75th International Venice Film Festival - Celebrity Sightings - Day 4

Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria premiered on Saturday at the Venice Film Festival. This is actually the first time that I’ve put it all together: Guadagnino, Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson all worked together on A Bigger Splash. Tilda and Dakota became quite friendly on that film, and Guadagnino and Tilda are obviously very close as well. That explains why the three of them decided to work together on Suspiria too. Anyway, I’m kind of in love with this header photo of Tilda and Dakota. They both look like bad bitches.

There’s a lot of fashion to cover, so I’m putting photocall and premiere photos together for the cast. Dakota wore Dior for both the photocall and premiere – I actually adore both looks completely. The white dress is simple and beautiful and the red gown is so dramatic. Love it.

75th Venice International Film Festival - 'Suspiria' - Premiere

Tilda also chose the same designer for her photocall and premiere looks: Haider Ackermann, one of her go-to designers. I don’t like the citrine look – too fussy and school-marmish.

I really appreciate the fact that Mia Goth eschews the typical starlet look – she does her own thing and she looks unique. She wore a simple Valentino dress to the photocall, and an interesting Givenchy for the premiere. I’m not in love with either of these looks, but they’re not flat-out bad either. The Givenchy would be stunning without the cutouts.

Chloë Grace Moretz wore MiuMiu for the photocall and she made me laugh – a true, genuine lol at these terrible pants. OMG. They’re awful. Deliciously awful. She wore Louis Vuitton to the premiere – also terrible.
