89th Oscars Nominees Luncheon 2017

America has really embraced James Corden, haven’t we? It seemed to happen gradually over the course of about a year, maybe a year and a half. Nowadays, Corden gets recognized wherever he goes and his hosting job on The Late Late Show has made him into a huge, international star. And you know why? It’s not that millions of people are tuning in to watch him on TV. It’s because he instinctively understood the need for online content, specifically content that would go viral. Jimmy Fallon has an increasingly awful set of stupid games he plays with celebrities, but Corden’s Carpool Karaoke is a work of genius. Anyway, Corden covers the March issue of Esquire (US), and the interview is surprisingly light on politics (considering the time frame within which this interview was conducted) and heavy on “this is how the late-show sausage is made.” You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Long-term goals: “I’m always keen to try new things visually, with openings and sketches. I’d like to film the show somewhere else for a week. This is what I was writing just this morning,” he said, smoothing out a handwritten note-to-self. “Visually better. More ambitious. And also sillier. Those three things.”

His competition: Technically, his competitors are NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and ABC’s Nightline. But really, Corden said, “our competition is people choosing to be asleep.”

What he thinks of the conversation that he should have Stephen Colbert’s time slot: “It just seems sort of silly to me. I really love him,” Corden said, referring to Colbert. “So I always find it slightly embarrassing. I really don’t think there’s any substantial evidence at all. I really don’t think it exists.”

He doesn’t care about time slots: “The only time I get really like, ‘What are you talking about?’ is when anyone will talk about time slots. Which is like telling the time with a sundial. Just the very notion of a television schedule for a show like this is absurd to me. I got really cross when we did that Carpool with Adele and someone wrote, ‘How did a 12:30 talk-show host get Adele?’ And I’m like, ‘What world are you living in?’ That clip has been viewed 129 million times. Those are Super Bowl numbers.”

He didn’t grow up watching David Letterman or Johnny Carson: “I feel very fortunate that I grew up without those tropes, or those influences. The people who influenced me were Chris Evans, Jonathan Ross, Graham Norton, and Wogan and Parkinson. Names that will mean almost nothing to most of the people in this [LA] restaurant. In the same way that if you went into a pub in Bradford and talked about Carson, no one would have a clue about who you were talking about.”

Typecast because of his weight: “When The History Boys became the hottest play in London there were eight boys of a similar age, and they were all getting these massive film scripts. And I would get the one page of a script for a guy who drops off a television to Hugh Grant, or who works at a newsstand and sells a paper to Julianne Moore. And I was like, ‘None of this is based on ability or charisma. It’s only about how I look, and about the assumption that people who look like that don’t fall in love in as nice a way as others. People who look like that are not as interesting.’ ”

Why he chose to try an American late-night show: “The more I thought about it, the more I realized, ‘Here’s someone offering me a chance to be at home every night with my family and try something that I might do quite well.’ ”

[From Esquire]

I didn’t realize before I read this, but Seth Meyers’ show consistently outperforms The Late Late Show with viewership. More people watch Corden’s show online, through YouTube clips. I think Seth Meyers has started to understand the power of building an audience through viral content too, because in the past year, his political “A Closer Look” segments have been doing really well on YouTube. Not Adele-on-Carpool-Karaoke numbers, but it’s become part of Seth’s brand and it’s helped him carve out a wonderful niche in the late-night fray. I would argue that both NBC and CBS could switch around their late-night hosts and TV would be a lot better – Corden would work so much better at 11:30, as would Seth. But they won’t do that.

As for what Corden says about being a heavier man and how he’s typecast… I believe it. Even in this Esquire story – which was very complimentary of him overall – there are more than a few references to him being “chubby” or “heavy.” It’s like, even men’s magazines have to remind their readers: this guy doesn’t have washboard abs, BEWARE.

Proud parents Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald posed with their two baby boys – Spurgeon, 15 months, and their newborn son – in their first family photo.

The 19 Kids and Counting star, 24, and her husband, 21, also appeared in a TLC video to introduce their new addition.

“We are so excited to introduce our little baby boy to the world,” said Jessa. “I think it’s really awesome that we have two little boys so close together in age. I know they’re going to be best friends and love growing up and doing everything together, so I’m looking forward to seeing that. I know Ben’s probably going to have them out in the backyard playing football in the next couple of years!”

The proud papa also revealed that their son will probably also have a unique name, just like his brother — though they haven’t settled on a moniker yet.

Jessa introduced her newborn on Monday via Instagram.

The Counting On stars welcomed their second child on Monday, Feb. 6.

“We are so happy to announce the arrival of our sweet second son,” they shared.

The statement continued:“He was born at 4:26 a.m. this morning, weighing 8 lbs. and 11 oz. and measuring 21 3/4 in. long. Mom and baby are both doing well. We are so thankful to God for this precious new gift of life and are excited to be a family of four! Thanks to everyone for your prayers and well wishes!”

Counting On airs Mondays (9 p.m. ET) on TLC.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston have been married for 25 years, which is pretty admirable. They’ve endured quite a bit during those 25 years as well to say the least. So when Travolta attended the Aviation Awards, Extra wanted to know what their secret was. Travolta said the main ingredient to their happy union is laughing.

John Travolta is still in love with wife Kelly Preston after 25 years together!

While at the Aviation Awards in Beverly Hills, Travolta chatted with “Extra’s” Renee Bargh about his wife, saying, “We just have a great sense of humor about each other. You know we have the stress that everyone else has, but also there’s the moment… I don’t know why I’m laughing, but we have that ability to have good fun at each other, you know.”

The aviation enthusiast gushed about his children Ella and Benjamin, sharing, “They’re exceptional. That sounds like bragging… they are exceptional children. I really like them as people as much as I love them as a father.”

[From Extra]

I can co-sign all of this. All of my relationships have been heavily dependent on humor and I would certainly list it as a reason my marriage works. I recognize there is a great deal more speculation as to how the Travolta/Preston marriage actually works, however. Just my two cents but I do believe they love each other. I’m not discounting the rumors that follow Travolta like a bad smell. I’ve mentioned that I used to work with hotels. One of them was a favorite of the Travoltas. They always stayed in the same room and were seen truly enjoying themselves while on property. They were lovely to the staff, too. And she almost always left a few days before him. Legally, I think that’s all I can say. But they endured the greatest heartbreak parents can face when their son Jett died and stuck by each so I really don’t doubt that they are truly partners who have an arrangement that works for them. And my motto is, it may not work for me but if it works for them – great.

On a crueler note, I think it’s safe to say that the “good fun” Kelly has at his expense must, in large part, be due to that suffering wombat he uses as a wiglet.

Speaking of happy marriages, The Life and Death of John Gotti starring Travolta and Kelly and John and Victoria Gotti is (finally!) set to come out next year. You can see a publicity still of Travolta here. I grew up (at a safe distance) during the days of Gotti and his very existence scared the hell out of me so I am kind of interested in seeing this. I know the story will be Teflon-coated but I want to watch Gotti die a slow, painful death.

Last month my favourite, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, who writes for GQ, was photographed with Tom Hiddleston and when those pictures came out, I posted that I couldn’t wait, couldn’t f-cking wait, to read the article. As always, Taffy delivers. Like I almost don’t want to say anything more about this …

Premiere of HBO's 'Big Little Lies' - Arrivals

Here are some photos from the big premiere event for HBO’s Big Little Lies, a miniseries produced by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. What I love about this miniseries already is that the men are mostly peripheral – while most of the female characters are married, the story centers around interpersonal relationships between women. The red carpet reflected that too. Anyway, let’s talk about fashion! Nicole wore this Altuzarra Spring 2017 dress which… is not the best and not the worst. I’ve been saying for months that Kidman’s style has been all over the place, and this is another example. It’s a perfectly okay dress, but it feels like she’s been picking out her red carpet fashions at the very last minute for every event.

Reese Witherspoon wore a cute little Elie Saab cocktail dress. I enjoy this. Reese’s date was her (TALL!) daughter Ava.

Shailene Woodley also wore Elie Saab. This is flattering, simple and well-tailored. I’m surprised by how much I like this on her.

Zoë Kravitz in Vera Wang. I’m okay with this – it seems beachy and comfortable – but I really don’t understand the blonde hair.

Laura Dern in Vivienne Westwood. I love Westwood’s designs, but this just seems… bad? It looks like it was made for a shorter woman and it looks half-finished. I doubt the skirt is supposed to look like that too.
