James Cameron – the Oscar-winning director of Titanic – has an interesting new-ish interview with the Daily Beast. Cameron is currently promoting a documentary called Atlantis Rising, about a group of archeologists searching for (you guessed it) Atlantis. The conversation quickly moved to Cameron’s years of environmental work, his years furthering the technological aspects of filmmaking, and his belief that everyone in the Trump administration is flat-out crazy. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Why the awards shows lately have had bad ratings: “There have been a few times throughout the history of the Oscars where a wildly popular film was well-received, but your typical year the Academy takes the position of: “It is our patrician duty to tell the great unwashed what they should be watching,” and they don’t reward the films that people really want to see—that they’re paying money to go see—and they’re telling them, “Yeah, you think you like that, but what you should be liking is this.” And as long as the Academy sees that as their duty, don’t expect high ratings. Expect a good show, and do that duty, but don’t whine about your ratings. Titanic was a very unusual case. I’m not saying it’s a better film than films before or after, or it was necessarily a better year in general, but it was a film that made a boatload of money and got a lot of nominations. The next time we see that, we’ll see ratings go up. It’s that simple.

Actors don’t like films that are heavy on technology: “There’s definitely a bias. The Academy still has a majority of its members that are actors. Look, I love actors, but that’s how they think—they’re generally skeptical of technology. So when they see a film that’s too dependent on visual effects, they say, oh, that’s not an acting movie…Even though I’ve spent an awful lot of time on scripts and on performance, I still love doing big, visual cinema. I doubt I’ll even get nominated again, but if I did, I’m probably going to lose to a Woody Allen movie. That’s the nature of it. So you don’t try to serve two masters.”

His environmental work: “A lot of my work that’s not specifically on the Avatar films—my activism—is around climate, and sustainability, and sustainable land use, and sustainable agriculture, but climate is number one. Years ago, we sort of spotted the iceberg ahead of us and we called out the order to turn, and we’ve been slowly, slowly, slowly trying to turn this big-ass ship to not hit the iceberg, and then Trump grabbed the tiller and just plunged it right back at the center of the iceberg. So am I worried? Of course. I’m like anyone of good conscience and reasonable intelligence. I think we’re the biggest freakin’ idiot civilization in history right now, and they’ll probably be talking about us 4,000 years from now scratching their heads—like they talk about Atlantis. Who are those guys? What did they do to piss off the gods so much that they’re buried under a hundred feet of mud right now?

Trump has greenlighted Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines: “Oh, I know. And by the way, he nominated a guy to run the EPA [Scott Pruitt] who has eight lawsuits against the EPA, and refuses to recuse himself from those lawsuits! It’s basically the upside-down world right now, and the kind of dialogue coming out of these guys sounds like George Orwell. Alternate facts? There’s no such thing as an alternate fact! These people are insane. But I’m keeping my head down, doing the stuff that I thought I would be doing if Hillary was elected. I’m making my Avatar films, I’m doing my climate work, I’m doing my sustainable agriculture work. You can only do what you can do.

[From The Daily Beast]

“These people are insane.” YES. And he’s also right about how this exact moment in history will be studied 4,000 years from now. Well, I mean, if there are even still human beings and such a thing as “studying history” 4,000 years from now, where earth has been renamed Trumpus and zombies who survived the nuclear holocaust become sentient.

Also: The Daily Beast asks him at the beginning what he thinks about the prevailing theory that in Titanic, Jack could have climbed onto the plank with Rose and they both could have lived. Cameron laughs off the theory and the Mythbusters episode devoted to it, basically saying that Jack would have died from hypothermia no matter what the scenario. I think I agree with that?

I am getting really excited for Big Little Lies later this month. I haven’t figured out how I am going to watch it as I don’t have HBO. I’ll likely have to hang out in my neighbor’s bushes and watch it through the window. Up until the ending, I loved that book. Nicole Kidman was perfectly cast as Celeste, who is central to the story. Of course she is also nominated for an Oscar for Lion and gets to repeatedly touch on Dev Patel on the red carpet but if that wasn’t enough good news, Nicole has also just been named the new face of Neutrogena – you know, the fresh-faced, dermatologist recommended brand? Nicole will be their new Global Brand Ambassador.

Nicole Kidman‘s 2017 is already shaping up to be a banner year: The actress is heading back to the Academy Awards having landed her fourth Oscar nomination for Lion, and she’s gearing up for the premiere of her HBO miniseries Little Big Lies later this month. But prior to the show’s debut, Kidman’s lending her famous face to another project: teaming up with Neutrogena to become their new Global Brand Ambassador.

“I’ve always been such a believer in having good skin,” Kidman tells PeopleStyle exclusively, adding that she feels this partnership with Neutrogena is “the right marriage.”

For years she’s relied on their sunscreen with SPF 100 to protect her skin. “I’m so fair, that’s a godsend for me,” she says.

While Kidman’s steadfast dedication to raising awareness about sun protection has already earned the praise of her friend Hugh Jackman, she’s hoping through her partnership with Neutrogena to reach an even larger audience. “I’ve grown up with an awareness of it. But [I’m] still always trying to teach people about it, as is Neutrogena. What would be so great would be to reduce skin cancer in the world.“

In a new campaign with the brand, the 49-year-old actress is also getting real about her skincare needs these days.

“I think when you’re really young, there’s cleanser and moisturizer, that’s it,” Kidman says in a behind-the-scenes clip teasing her upcoming commercial, which will be revealed during the Academy Awards on February 25.

“For me now, obviously, I’m of course looking to keep my skin as young as it can be. I mean, we all are, I think. So, I’m looking for products that can help that.”

[From People]

I am actually 100% behind the sunscreen campaign. I was not raised with much emphasis on sunscreen because my parents weren’t either. My mother spent most of her youth at the beach unprotected and is now paying the price, severely. My husband is really fair like Nicole. Fortunately, his mother was fanatical about sunscreen and instilled that in him so our kids have been raised far more conscientiously than I was. Nicole said she and her husband Kieth Urban are diligent about lathering up their girls too. She’s a great ambassador for this campaign. You can see one of the early promo stills here, Nicole looks incredible in it.

But can we take just a moment with the line, “For me now, obviously, I’m of course looking to keep my skin as young as it can be… So, I’m looking for products that can help that.” Yes, Nicole, I think we are all fairly well aware of what products you favor to look young. I know sunscreen and Botox are not mutually exclusive but it will be funny to watch her try to tell us how excited she is about the product with an expressionless face.

In other Nicole news, Woman’s Day claims Nicole is planning on writing a tell-all that will discuss her supposed affairs with Ewan McGregor, Q Tip and Lenny Kravitz in addition to blowing the lid off her marriage with Tom Cruise and her views on Scientology. I don’t believe she will do any of that and for the record, I have always admired Nicole’s discretion or the sake of Keith and her children, but man would I eat that thing up if she actually did write it.

At our old house, my ma, the Squawking Chicken, had a big-bellied smiling Budda placed mid-landing up the stairs. You saw him as soon as you opened the door, which was the intention: to have a jolly Buddha greeting everyone as they walked in, like a happy blessing. Ma used to tell people that rub…

Do you think Johnny Depp is “broke”? I do not. While he has sued his ex-managers for allegedly stealing/mismanaging tens of millions of dollars, I think Depp still has money. He’s still rich, he’s just terrible at downsizing and making smart money decisions. He should spend a few dollars on a Suze Orman book or something. But Depp and his publicist want you to believe that he’s a “victim” and that his ex-managers are trying to “gaslight” the public into believing Depp is anything other than a bad-smelling, wife-beating, scarfy hobo with a major wine problem. And now this: Page Six reports that Depp has fired his long-time (and long-suffering) agent because he didn’t want to pay her exorbitant commissions anymore.

Johnny Depp is in such financial turmoil that he fired his longtime Hollywood agent, saying he couldn’t pay her any more commissions on his movie deals, and made a deal with a rival agency. Last October, Depp walked away from UTA’s Tracey Jacobs, the famed agent who in 1988 took him from TV’s “21 Jump Street” and made him into an international movie superstar.

A Hollywood source said, “Depp told Jacobs and UTA he no longer wanted to pay their commissions. But they pushed back.” So the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star jumped ship to CAA, which gave him a sweeter deal. About CAA’s lower commissions, another source said, “They don’t do blue-light specials.” But as far as Depp’s finances, the agency was “sensitive to it when he signed.” On Depp leaving UTA, the insider added, “He was with Tracey Jacobs for a gajillion years — their relationship had run its course. He was looking for a change.” CAA and UTA declined to comment.

Last week, it was revealed in documents filed by Depp’s business managers that he spends an astonishing $2 million a month. Among the examples of his excess were $75 million spent on 14 homes, $18 million on a luxury yacht, and $30,000 per month on wine. Plus, he blew $3 million on shooting the ashes of his hero, author Hunter S. Thompson, out of a cannon over Aspen, Colo.

[From Page Six]

I feel sorry for Tracey Jacobs because she really was a huge part of Depp’s success. She stayed with him during the art-house period when he wasn’t making much money, and she stayed with him through Vanessa Paradis and Amber Heard. They were reportedly very close, almost like family. And now that Depp has some money problems, he doesn’t want to give Jacobs her contractual commissions? Sounds about right. I also wonder if Depp’s new CAA deal is a full package, meaning new representation overall, from agent to manager to publicist. Because if he’s going to make any money in the next few years, he’s going to need a complete image and press-relations overhaul.

Scott Foley joins Holiday Pet Bark Box Adoption

I am somewhat gross about food. I don’t have crazy-weird eating habits, but I do have food quirks. Right now, I’m PMS-ing really hard and last night I gave into cravings and ate two packets of microwave bacon and I have no regrets. I’m not one of those “just put sriracha/BBQ sauce/ranch dressing on ~~~” people either. I like the way meat tastes without a lot of extras. I like a good-quality Italian dressing and that’s about it. I really have to be in the mood for something spicy. So basically, my food quirks are pretty bland. So, I had no idea that this was a thing, but apparently Scott Foley likes to put peanut butter on his scrambled eggs. Is this gross?

Scott Foley has an, um, interesting breakfast combination he’d like everyone to try.

The Scandal star shook up the food world after he posted a video of himself spreading peanut butter all over his scrambled eggs. His son, Konrad, 2, also appears to be a fan of the unconventional dish. “You want more peanut butter on your eggs?” he says, translating an unintelligible — yet adorable — question from his youngest child with wife, Marika Domi?czyk. “It’s a family thing. It’s a protein thing.”

The video quickly racked up 10,000 likes in 30 minutes and now has over 50,000 views. “You guys are insane — insane,” he says in a followup video. “It’s so good. Don’t knock it till you try it. Thanks! Peanut butter eggs. Dig it.”

[From People]

Please, the original “peanut butter eggs” are the peanut butter-and-chocolate eggs I get at Easter!!! ACCEPT NO IMITATIONS. I’ll admit to being a big fan of the peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, but peanut butter and scrambled eggs? I won’t try it. I’m not adventurous, I don’t eat eggs that often and just thinking about this combo makes me feel a bit sick. That being said, my mom puts ketchup on her scrambled eggs and everyone always thinks that’s so weird.

Good morn! Give it a shot. Seriously.

Earlier today Hecate reported on Kim Zolciak Bierman’s vacation, where she proudly snapchatted the fact that she argued with a woman asking her to keep her kids quiet on the beach, called the woman names and told her to move if she didn’t like it. It takes a special kind of a-hole to brag like that on social media about fighting with someone asking their kids to be behave. Enter this latest story about Kim’s social media bragging, where she shared a photo of her four year-old son Kash’s homework, written very obviously by an adult. That’s fine, kids at that age usually can’t write more than their names and you can see at the top of the page that Kash wrote his. Preschoolers also rely heavily on their parents to know right from wrong and to form opinions on things. So when Kash’s homework says he loves his dad because “he lets me hold his real gun” it’s obvious where he gets that idea.

I have a boy and was somewhat amused and alarmed to learn that some little boys love guns with seemingly no external prompting. I’m sure it’s inescapable in our culture, but guns are fun in theory when you’re a kid. While we don’t have any guns in the house, I understand a little boy’s interest in them. I also am in no way anti-gun. Personally I don’t own one, I’m a flaming liberal, but I have no problem with responsible gun owners who are trained and keep their guns stored safely – away from little kids. I agree with Obama’s executive orders which expand background check requirements to include gun shows and internet sales, but that’s another discussion and of course the Republicans are gutting those regulations.

There was just an infographic going around showing that in 2015 many more people were killed by toddlers with guns than by extremists, and Snopes verified that it was accurate. Guns are dangerous weapons and little kids shouldn’t think of the real ones as toys. I don’t know if Kim is just hoping for headlines at a time when her pro football player husband, Kroy, is out of work, but I really hope that gun is locked safely away from her son. I completely disagree with letting him hold it. Would you let a little four year-old hold a super sharp knife? Hell no and that’s way less dangerous. What’s the point of letting a kid hold a gun?!

I don’t have a problem with this Halloween costume honestly. US Magazine posted it with this story.
