Matthew McConaughey has fallen into making two kinds of movies: 1) Serious award-baity fare, and 2) whatever the hell he was doing in Wolf of Wall Street. The first trailer for his new movie, Gold, was released yesterday and it definitely looks like it’s from the second category. McConaughey is s…

Hillary Clinton has been doing events this week with actress and reproductive-rights activist Elizabeth Banks. They make a pretty good team, but I’m just saying that because I really like Banks. Banks’ presence on the campaign trail also attracted the entertainment media, and so Hillary and Elizabeth sat down for an interview with Extra this week. While Hillary talked about serious stuff – college loans, the need for millennials to become more involved in our political system – there were obviously some pop-culture questions too. They asked HRC about Kim Kardashian! HRC knows Kim – they met at a fundraiser and Kim endorsed Hillary just a few weeks ago. Some assorted quotes from HRC:

On Kim’s robbery: “I felt really bad for her. Oh, I did. She’s back now, right?” she asked. After being informed that the E! reality star was indeed safe and in New York City with Kanye West, Hillary praised the rapper for rushing to Kim’s aid in her time of need. “And her husband…he was in the middle of the concert and he ran offstage. Bless his heart. It’s horrible. I’m just glad nobody was hurt.”

On SNL’s debate spoof: “I saw it on delay, but I did see it. I’ll tell you when Kate McKinnon came out with the walker, I thought I was going to fall off my chair. She makes me laugh anyway, she is so funny just naturally. Oh, my gosh, she was amazing. I wish I could do the jumps, the splits, the somersault…I’ve been working on it.”

On Alec Baldwin’s Trump impression: “Perfect. I can’t wait to see what else they’re going to do. His look, his scowling, his staring down then muttering his response, he was perfect. I don’t know who is going to show up at the next debate Sunday night.”

Whether she’ll do another cameo on SNL: “We have a lot of ground to cover in the next 35 days, but I’m always up for standing around the bar.”

[From Extra]

I like that Hillary’s first reaction was, you know, to feel sympathy or empathy. She didn’t go to the “it’s her fault for being a famous woman!” argument, probably because Hillary has been a famous woman for decades and she knows well the kinds of threats that come with simply being a woman in the public sphere. When asked for comment, I’m sure Donald Trump said something about Kim having a fat ass.

Katie Couric, Global Anchor of Yahoo News and co-founder of Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), has been in broadcast journalism for 37 years. She was the first solo female primetime news anchor when she took over CBS Evening News. She is very well respected in her field and yet, even Katie is not impervious to Internet trolls. While appearing on Anna Faris’ Anna Faris is Unqualified podcast, Katie admitted that the online insults rattle her every time.

No matter how many fans you have, you’re always going to have haters — and Katie Couric struggles with online trolls just like any other celebrity.

“Honestly, I never get used to it,” she admitted. “[The other day] I was going through my Facebook mentions because I had posted this profile of this darling girl named Abby Shapiro who died of osteosarcoma when she was just 16 years old. … I posted this tribute to her because I was doing that in the days leading up to our [Stand Up to Cancer] event and I read this comment and some guy said: ‘Katie, I watched your interview with Tom Hanks. Clearly you’re over-tanning — your skin looks like a monkey scrotum.’ “

Recalled Couric: “I thought, Wow, really? First of all, I thought, Oh gosh, maybe I am over-tanning, but then I thought, What motivates someone to be so nasty?”

“I think when you become a public figure, per se, people completely lose sight that you’re a real person,” continued the journalist. “It’s this weird kind of objectification, or depersonalization, and when I read these mean comments it’s like a knife in my heart.”

“I think part of the embarrassment is the collective shaming you feel when other people are reading these awful comments — it feels like a schoolyard taunt that everybody is listening to and they’re all looking at you and embarrassing you and shaming you,” she said.

[From People]

Katie was also able to quote a letter she was sent back in the early 90s in which a man told her her hair looked like “a ski slope for an adventurous sparrow.” I wonder if any of us could quote a compliment verbatim that we were given in the early 90s? Not to mention whatever they said is usually taken at face value. Like when Katie said her first reaction to the tanning comment was, “Oh gosh, maybe I am over-tanning.” Katie said she tries to rationalize why people feel the need to make those sorts of comments. I think we all do this, create a backstory for our tormentors, hypothesizing what pain they must be suffering to be so cruel. I’m not sure it helps, though. When I go to bed that night their slight is on my mind, not their tortured soul.

It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the last part of the excerpt. When an insult is thrown on the Internet, your shame is on a global stage – like being in the stockades. It’s funny, however, but when someone says something nice, that seems like such a personal moment between you and the commenter alone.

I’ll bet half of the ugly comments left for Katie are Sarah Palin using pseudonyms (spelled phonetically, of course).

Would you like to see some photos of Prince Harry playing with balls? Of course you would. These are photos of Harry today at Lords Cricket Ground. He was doing an appearance for the Coach Core charity, which aims to help disadvantaged youths get the necessary skills to break into the athletic-coaching world. Our Ginger Prince wore because shades of blue, and his ginger fuzz was particularly and delightfully rumpled. He looked like he was having a great time playing with the kids and doing… cricket things (I know nothing about cricket, is that even what’s happening in these photos???).

Anyway, Harry is lovely, sexy and beautiful. My only criticism here is that he’s getting to the age (he’s past the age, honestly) where he needs to think about sunblock as a daily routine, plus it wouldn’t hurt for him to have some anti-wrinkle night cream. But even then, the eye crinkles look good on him. These photos also made me think about Harry’s wife prospects. It feels like everyone wants Harry to find a girl and settle down sooner rather than later and even Tatler is getting involved – Tatler did a special piece about “ten high society singletons who would be perfect for Harry.” Personally, I hope Harry does not end up with anyone who could be described as a “socialite.” I hope he ends up with someone workhorse charity person.

Lindsey Vonn is promoting her new book, Strong is The New Beautiful, wherein she shares her fitness and wellness tips. She’s been talking about body image and how it relates to her career as a professional skiier turned red carpet fixture. (My words.) Excuse my skepticism because while I appreciate body positivity for everyone I do get a little tired of the “thin women aren’t normal” argument that we just heard from Demi Lovato. All bodies are real, all people are real, but to be fair it’s not like Lindsey is taking that kind of extreme stance, she’s just advocating for a more athletic body type, which happens to be her own. In recent appearances, on Colbert and Access Hollywood, she talked about beauty and how we need to expand the societal definition of beauty to include athleticism:

Colbert: That is weak shaming the rest of us. What do you mean by strong is the new beautiful?
I just feel like the image in society is changing and strong is beautiful, being athletic and being confident in yourself is what makes someone beautiful, you don’t have to be model thin to be beautiful.

This isn’t a diet book or anything?
No I hate the word diet. You can have hot chocolate.

Colbert asks about the steamed fish rule
If you feel like you’re hungry, think about ‘could I eat steamed fish right now?’ If the answer is yes, then you’re probably actually hungry.

ET: On her nekkid photoshoot for the book
It was kind of my idea. That was me I’m finally confident in who I am. That’s what I do that’s my skiing position and like here I am. I’m strong, and I believe in myself and I’m happy and I’m confident.

I used to always care what people think and I really don’t anymore. I’m not the same as everyone else, I’m not skinny and I’m ok with that. I wanted to just share my experiences with everyone and hopefully they can be confident too.

On feeling insecure on the red carpet
I was like “am I too big do I need to lose weight?” It kind of got into my head. I lost sight of my goals, I lost sight of skiing. I have to be strong and big for skiing that’s just what it is.

[From Colbert and Access Hollywood]

I’ve said before that I don’t think she’s “big” by any stretch, it just feels that way to her to because in Hollywood the actresses and models are tiny. I do agree that athletic, strong women are gorgeous, but this seems off somehow like she’s seeking validation. She does care what people think or else she wouldn’t talk about it so much. She also admitted that the naked photoshoot was her idea. (She’s strategically covered and you can see that somewhat NSFW image here.) Maybe I have a hard time taking her seriously after her long association with Tiger Woods.

Here’s Lindsey’s interview with Colbert and you can see her Access Hollywood interview on their site
