As I’ve mentioned before, I feel guilty about finding Diplo attractive. I know he’s a douchebag. I know he’s arrogant. I know I shouldn’t even think that he’s sexy. But what can I say? I would hate-bang the man so hard. Diplo covers the new issue of Billboard because Billboard named him the “Dance Artist of the Year.” Don’t call Diplo “EDM” though – he doesn’t like it. He thinks EDM is lame. He thinks DJs are lame. He says so in his Billboard cover interview. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

His success as a producer: “Beyoncé is the only artist I’ve produced for the last year, because it’s more lucrative for us to make our own music now. When we put out a song with Beyoncé, cool, we’ll get a fee, we’ll get some [publishing] splits, but Beyoncé is going to make a billion dollars touring it. If I make a song and it’s my song, like ‘Lean On,’ we’re going to make money off the synchs, the Spotify and we get to headline festivals on it. That’s the model I want to explore.”

Doing shows in Cuba & Pakistan: “In Pakistan, people were in tears. I’m not like the Red Cross, but the kids in Pakistan and Cuba want this. It feels like I’m doing something that’s important — I’m helping them create something that wasn’t there before.”

Growing up in South Florida:
“The three things I’d hear were Miami bass, reggae and heavy metal. I still wonder why anyone would listen to any other music.”

He hates the EDM scene: “The DJ world is the corniest f–ing group of people. We’re not celebrities, we’re not famous for any good reason. We’re just … really lame. Besides people like Dillon Francis, who makes fun of the whole thing, or Calvin Harris, it’s a sinking ship. It’s a really lame culture. I’m sad that I’m part of it, but I play the game.”

He worked on Beyonce’s “Hold Up” & “All Night” on Lemonade: “She’s one of the only artists who can culminate a body of work so concisely. Nobody does that anymore.” Like everyone else, Diplo heard his tracks in context for the first time on the HBO special. “I was like, ‘Oh f–, this all makes sense.’ ”

Who he’d love to work with: “I’ve been stalking [country singer] Sam Hunt. I think he can go multiformat in the Taylor Swift way.”

Working with Justin Bieber: “Justin came to Vegas one night when I played ‘Where Are U Now.’ He had just turned 21, and he was like, ‘Yo, man, I want to thank you, because this is the first time I’ve ever had adults clap for me. This is like a big deal.’ You think about that, and yeah, he was kind of like a clown on a pedestal. People just like picked on him…I think it’s hard because Justin wants to be cool. And he’s a music fan. He loves pop music just like he loves rap music. We did like five rap songs you’ll never hear. And if you were 18 or 19, can have any girl you want, have all the money you want? F–, I would be a lot f–ing crazier than him. I mean, I’m 37, and I’m just finally maturing now.”

He loves Bernie Sanders: “If Hillary [Clinton] was the only candidate, I don’t think anyone would care about politics at all. [Donald] Trump is actually exciting in a lot of ways, too. But Bernie Sanders is amazing to me because so many young kids learned about politics [through him]. And it was all because of the Internet. The traditional media never gave Bernie Sanders the time of day. But he went viral the same way hip-hop and new dances go viral. And I’m part of that culture.”

[From Billboard]

What surprised me, reading this piece, was that Diplo actually does have a really good head for business, and he has great gut-level instincts about what will become culturally popular. As for his take on the “sinking ship” of EDM, this is like the fifth reference to the waning popularity of EDM I’ve read in the past two months. If Diplo says EDM is a sinking ship, it probably is. If Diplo says DJs are lame, then they probably are. All I can say for sure is that Beyonce’s “All Night” is one of my favorite songs on Lemonade and now that I know Diplo produced it? Damn. Just another reason for me to hate-bang him.

While Lupita Nyong’o was nominated for a Tony Award for her work on Eclipsed, her turn on Broadway has not been entirely smooth sailing. Just before Eclipsed went to Broadway, sources insisted to the Daily Mail that Lupita was behaving like an unhinged diva behind-the-scenes. Sources claimed that Lupita thought she was better than her costars and she refused to socialize with them. There were claims that she’s an “ice cold untouchable diva,” etc. I shrugged off that story because it just seemed petty and untrue. Plus, if Lupita wasn’t enjoying her off-Broadway experience that much, why did she agree to an extended run of the play and the move to Broadway? Well, now Page Six claims that the play’s investors aren’t happy with Lupita’s attitude either.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is upsetting investors, fans and producers of her Broadway show “Eclipsed.” Sources tell Page Six the actress has missed some shows and unofficially requested to have Wednesdays off.

“Wednesdays are her days off, but there was never an announcement, so fans are pissed when they come to the show and she’s not there,” said the insider, who adds that Nyong’o gives “exhaustion or ‘I have a sore toe’?” as excuses for skipping work. Meanwhile, on one of her off days, the star was spotted hanging out with Misty Copeland, further angering investors. “They were banking on her fame and have not seen a return. The most disrespectful thing is taking off every Wednesday while being seen hanging out with Misty. If you’re too tired to work, stay in bed.”

Another source tells us Nyong’o “hasn’t hustled .?.?. Tony voters are coming to see her. Fans fly in to see her. This isn’t Hollywood, and she’s bringing her movie-star privilege to Broadway.”

A source close to Nyong’o told us she’s only contractually obligated to be in seven shows a week. “She’s maybe missed a show or two because she was sick and lost her voice, but she was never expected to appear in Wednesday-evening shows. And she’s done more to promote this play than other nominees. This is her passion project that she is dedicated to and proud of.”

Danai Gurira penned the tale about five African women surviving the Second Liberian Civil War. The show has earned six Tony nominations, including a Best Lead Actress nod for Nyong’o, but has earned around $300,000 a week out of a potential $800,000.

“They produced a show with a very difficult subject matter, so the box office may not be what they want it to be, but you can’t put that on Lupita. The amount of publicity she’s done, I don’t think she could’ve done more,” said another insider.

[From Page Six]

I don’t get it? Her contract is for seven shows a week and she does seven shows a week. Why are they putting it on Lupita if there was no announcement that Wednesday is her day off? And why does anyone care how she’s spending her day off? I really don’t understand the hostility of these sources. As for Lupita’s hustle, I can’t really speak to that. I think she met her media contractual obligations but not much more, mostly because Lupita sees the value in actually having some mystery. She’s not in our faces all the time, not even when she’s promoting one of her projects. Now, I do think there’s probably some finger-pointing going on with the finances. But the play – while well-reviewed – was always going to be a difficult sell because of the subject matter. And that’s not on Lupita either.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been on the move a lot in the past week. They took a vacation for Kanye’s Gemini birthday, then they returned to LA, and then they flew to Paris this weekend. These are photos of Kim and Yeezy in Paris today. Everybody is making a big deal about Kim’s body-con dress and her Yeezy Season 2 boots. Yes, Kim wears Kanye’s collection. And Kanye “designed” high-heeled peep-toe boots. These retail for $995. Would you spend that much on Yeezy boots? I would not. I wouldn’t even spend that much on boots I actually liked. I will say this though – Kim’s figure looks great here. You can really tell that she’s lost all of the baby weight. I don’t even hate the matchy-matchy dress and sweater-coat.

Kim also got pretty political on Twitter yesterday following the Orlando shooting. Kim’s spoken up in the aftermath of mass shootings before, and she’s been criticized for speaking up too. I’m sort of proud of her (if that’s the right word) for not backing down and for not resorting to false equivalencies, pettiness or threats. Here’s part of what she tweeted:

Under current federal law people on terror watch lists can legally buy guns – this is called the Terror Gap

— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) June 12, 2016

We have repeatedly called on Congress to close this loophole that makes it easy for dangerous people to get guns & kill.

— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) June 12, 2016

Nothing has changed!!!! People continue to senselessly die. When will these gun laws be changed?!?!?!?!!!!?????

— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) June 12, 2016

Mark the date on your calendar… I think most people agree with something Kim Kardashian said.
