Donnie Wahlberg and Dr. Jenny McCarthy were on the Howard Stern show yesterday, and the headline making the rounds is about Jenny and The View maybe or maybe not unofficially asking her back. Who cares.

There’s another clip floating around that is far more interesting, concerning Donnie Wahlb…

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift out last night at Katsuya. She was having a girls’ night with some friends, perhaps trying to sway the conversation away from Calvin Harris and boys altogether. The other girl in these photos is Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello. Swifty’s outfit here is cute, right? Her casual style has improved so much in the past year and a half. However, I think her hair situation is backsliding. I feel like she got a haircut recently and she asked for MOAR BANGS. And it’s just not working.

As for the continuing situation with Calvin Harris… I don’t know. Last we heard, he was in Nashville with her for several days and “sources” claimed that it was totally on. They even kissed each other in public! But Calvin did not join Swifty in LA and who even knows where this is going? Well, sources tell Hollywood Life that Calvin is ready to change his ways for Swifty. Maybe.

While Taylor Swift, 25, and Calvin Harris, 31, have yet to confirm their relationship, it’s pretty obvious that major sparks are flying between the two musicians once they were spotted holding hands while hanging out in Nashville. Now, a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that Calvin wants to do whatever it takes to make sure Taylor won’t be writing a breakup song about him!

“Calvin has enormous respect for Taylor, and he’s been incredibly gentlemanly towards her so far in their courtship,” a source explains to HollywoodLife.com. “For that reason, her friends, knowing full well about his past reputation, are going to give him the benefit of doubt and trust him with Taylor. There’s no doubt that Calvin has always had a long stream of female admirers. He’s also been a bit of a player in the past – but he wants to do the right thing by Taylor.”

[From Hollywood Life]

Eh. I don’t think Calvin is some crazy womanizer. He’s probably more of a serial monogamist, jumping from one relationship to the next. But yeah, when he’s “single,” I bet he gets around. And I still think it’s a good idea for Swifty to deal with this sort of guy, even if it is just a short-term thing. She usually goes for twee, cutesy dudes. Calvin is different.

As Maria noted in her Tidal post, Taylor Swift was probably THE biggest name not present and accounted for at the Tidal kickoff yesterday. I say THE biggest name because, love her or hate her, you cannot deny Taylor’s chart influence, not only with the latest album 1989 but her previous ones too….

Last December, Russell Crowe gave an interview to an Australian outlet and he ended up causing a controversy. His male privilege leaked out all over the place when he chatted about how actresses over the age of 35 just need to accept their age and stop trying to play the ingenue, and that it’s a total myth that actresses have problems finding parts beyond a certain age. He was widely criticized, as he should have been. Well, Rusty has a new film – The Water Diviner – and he’s on a big press tour. He sat down with The Guardian for a wide-ranging (and actually pretty entertaining) interview – you can read the full piece here. Towards the end of the interview, he was asked about those December comments, and he tries to clarify. Some highlights from The Guardian piece:

He doesn’t believe actors should do endorsements/ads: “Look, there will possibly come a time when I start doing commercials and you’ll know then that I’ve just given up. Other people can do whatever they want. It’s just my thing. But it’s just reaping, you know? We’re supposed to play different characters. We’re not supposed to lock ourselves and become an icon. I have a … A certain opinion about that level of vanity.”

His life after his Oscar win: “Even walking down the street was a pain in the arse. People want a piece of you. And something else happens, man. You build all these friendships and then you hit a certain level within the business and those people need you now, if you’re connected to their thing, their thing gets done, their life is enriched, and friendships get damaged because you say no. Suddenly I was destroying people’s hopes and dreams if I said no to something. It was rather intense.”

He never wanted to live in LA or London: “It’s not healthy as me for an individual, to sleep in the office. There’s an ease that I have living in Australia. The best things about Sydney are free: the sunshine’s free and the harbour’s free and the beach is free. Some cities, and this place [London] is one example, there’s all these clubs and you need membership and, you know, six people to tick your name and all that. F–k all that, man.”

His comments about actresses and aging: “It doesn’t matter what age you are, right? But what I said about knowing 40-year-old women who are absolutely certain that because they eat the right things, they do yoga, look after their bodies … they look sensational, but that still doesn’t mean they look 21. In their eyes, there’s not the ingenue kind of innocence. I can’t be the gladiator any more. I don’t have that kind of physicality. Look the thing that people are talking about in terms of ageism or sexism or whatever, that’s prevalent everywhere and it’s male and female. When my dad was 45, he was suddenly unemployable. He’d always been the boss, always been in control, but now, in the job he was doing, there was a 25 year old who could do it for half the money. So that’s life. But the examples I used – Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep – there’s a dozen women, Maggie Smith and whatever …I’m just saying: be comfortable in your own skin. Sure, you know, if you’re lucky enough you get to be the ingenue, but then at a certain point, you’re the dowager. But enjoy playing that role too.”

[From The Guardian]

Rusty still doesn’t get it, does he? “If you’re lucky enough you get to be the ingenue, but then at a certain point, you’re the dowager…” Yes, Rusty, that’s exactly the problem. It’s not that actresses are complaining about playing dowagers, it’s that the only roles for women in most Hollywood films are the ingénue or the hard-scrabble mom or grandmother. The issue is not with the state of mind with any particular actress, the issue is with the system that devalues female characters and the breadth of experiences of women at every age. And the fact that Russell Crowe is still considered a leading man and a go-to guy for studios at his age (50) is proof positive that the system isn’t working for actresses.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central roast aired last night. Did you watch? CC posted some clips from the episode. The sole highlight of the program appears to be this photo ^^^ of Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. Are they canoodling? I’m shipping it. Remember, these two have a history. They made Snoop’s special brownies together! Good times. (Too bad Snoop is married.)

As for the roast itself, we already discussed the jokes that leaked before airtime. Most of them were tasteless with lots of Selena Gomez potshots and jabs at other people. E! has a round up of even more offensive, NSFW jokes that I can’t repeat here. Which is fine, they’re not very funny jokes at all. I’d rather talk about this new interview that Bieber did with USA Today. He’s still on his redemption tour, and he thinks his eyes tell the tale of his repentant ways. Eyes are the window to the Swaggy soul:

On becoming a man: “Yeah, I’m growing, figuring some stuff out. As you do when you grow up. You figure out what type of man you want to be, that’s where I’m at.”

He has a new entourage: “Yeah, I left a lot of people behind who weren’t on the same journey I was on, and I’ve got a lot of new people in my life who are pouring into me, and not taking away from me.

The biggest change: “Well, my eyes. You know how you can tell a person by their eyes, their intentions and where they’re at? Well, my eyes changed, they got softer and brighter. They’re open. I have more of a grasp of who I am at this point.”

Is it hard to be Swaggy? “Unless you’re stupid, I don’t think you would think it’s easy to be who I am. Just use your head, you’ll understand that my life is not easy. Not having privacy. Growing up in front of the cameras since I was 13, 14. You need to have those mess-ups without anyone judging you, and that’s not something I was able to do. I think that people realize, they see it now, the transition. We can talk and do interviews and I can say I’m in a better place, but until they see the walk, and see the transition come to life, that’s what’s really going to matter.

Fitness, man: “It’s a big part of my life, yeah. I work out every day. Mostly it’s free weights and cardio. I don’t do that stuff where they throw logs at you, what’s it called, cross-fit. None of that. Mainly it’s just me in the gym, lifting weights.”

[From USA Today]

Even when Bieber’s trying to sound contrite, he still comes off like an ungrateful brat. If one aims to persuade an audience of character growth, it behooves one to not call his audience “stupid.” Bieber’s very insulated and coddled, but he should know right from wrong. His behavior hasn’t demonstrated that knowledge yet. Is it difficult to grow up in the public eye? Obviously. But Swaggy has had so many chances. He needs to work harder for the redemption he so desperately needs for his career to continue.

Late last week, Entertainment Weekly published a lengthy interview with Steven Moffat, the writer/director/producer who currently helms Doctor Who and Sherlock (Moffat co-created Sherlock with Mark Gatiss). You can read the piece here – Moffat throws some shade at Elementary (which is totally unnecessary because Elementary is really good and a different beast altogether), he previews the four season/series of Sherlock and he talks a lot about fan-fiction and how brilliant a lot of it is. Moffat says the fourth series – which they haven’t even filmed yet, for the love of God – will be “more of an emotional upheaval.” He also seems to be saying that the fans have “missed” some big question that will be answered. Anyway, the piece is like nerd p0rn for Sherlock-loonies. As is this, Moffat’s discussion about whether Sherlock really is gay.

A few months ago, the rumors started again: Did Benedict Cumberbatch just out Sherlock as gay?! At issue was a comment the Sherlock star made on Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast when comparing the great detective and another iconic British character, Doctor Who. “They’ve got different dress senses, different taste in the sex of their partners…,” the actor said.

Now, most would probably interpret that as a reference to Sherlock and The Doctor’s procedural partners on their respective shows: Dr. Watson is a man, while The Doctor’s companion is a woman. But some thought that Cumberbatch was hinting that Sherlock is gay, a misconception that’s the focus of plenty of online fanfiction, and that the show occasionally itself plays with. (See, for example, the season 3 fantasy scene above between Sherlock and Moriarty.)

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat wants to set the record straight, so to speak, once and for all.

“We walk into that one all the time,” Moffat tells EW. “It’s a funny thing when a character for over 100 years has been saying, ‘I don’t do that at all.’ He’s been saying it over 100 years! He’s not interested in [sex]. He’s willfully staying away from that to keep his brain pure—a Victorian belief, that. But everyone wants to believe he’s gay. He’s not gay. He’s not straight. And Doctor Watson is very clear that he prefers women. People want to fantasize about it. It’s fine. But it’s not in the show.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

In the Doyle canon, doesn’t Sherlock show SOME interest in women though? There’s Irene, of course, but I’m pretty sure he had some kind of interest in a few other women. I would err on the side of saying the original Sherlock character self-identified as straight but chose to live an asexual life. But I like that Moffat puts it into the “Victorian” context. That really was the idea back then – the Victorians were notorious prudes. You could be in love with someone and never want or need to touch them.

Yesterday was the launch of a new Jay Z-backed music streaming service, Tidal. It started with a social media takeover (which I’ll get to) and then a press conference. An awkward as hell press conference; I got the sweats watching it. Why was the crowd hollering, who did they invite to this thing…
