Christian Siriano works so hard on the fashion for awards and he’s in high demand as he’s one of the few designers who dresses all women, not just the smallest ones. Last night he made headlines and history by being the first designer to dress a man in a gown for the Oscars (he said he didn’t think any man has worn a gown on the red carpet, but I remember those South Park guys wearing dresses to the Oscars in 2000 to poke fun, which is not the same). Christian said on E! that he made this gown in just a week and that it’s a strapless corseted gown underneath a jacket. He said “Billy wanted something different, wanted to push the boundaries.” It’s amazing.

Billy explained his decision to Vogue and you can read his full interview there. He said he’s always loved fashion, that he wanted to push gender boundaries and that he’s always wanted to wear a ball gown. He approached Christian about making him one, he was game and this is the result! I can’t believe it only took a week. I would say that the ruffled collar and sleeves are a bit much but that’s what they’re going for.

Also in Christian Siriano was Danielle Macdonald from Dumplin’. This is sustainable, the Siriano people sent us an email that says it’s “red cotton crepe vegetable dyed fabric with recycled tulle for the sleeves and minimal waste for the skirt and top.” It’s a great color and I like the fabric but it definitely needs fitting in the bust area. It’s like she needed another visit for tailoring.

Octavia Spencer has been loyal to Tadashi Shoji for years but she’s been branching out lately. This year she was in a navy blue sequin Christian Siriano gown with draped shoulders. This is really pretty I like it.

Here’s my theory about Oscar dresses: if you’re a favourite to win, your Oscar fashion is going to be on the safe side. Because the pictures you take that night, in that outfit, are forever. They’ll be used for a long time. And you don’t want to take the risk on a dress that doesn’t hold up. That’s …

Rachel Weisz was an Oscar nominee for The Favourite, and we have high fashion expectations for our Oscar nominees, especially when they’re famous for being fashionable. Years ago, I would have said that Rachel could wear anything and she would look stunning. That was before Givenchy gave her an orange PVC raincoat and reworked it into some kind of tragic gown. Honestly, I will feel the sting of this disappointment for a long time. To add insult to injury, that diamond headband is completely nonsensical with this dress.

Amy Adams lost again! Ugh. It felt like Glenn Close was going to be the example for Amy, that eventually Amy would win an Oscar for her career’s work when she gets older. But no, Amy can’t even have that. Amy knew she wasn’t going to win too, that’s why she chose this boring Versace. Again, it’s not a bad dress and it flatters her figure and it’s even a tad “racy” for wholesome Amy. But it’s mostly just there, kind of bland and inoffensive. The necklace is bad though.

Kiki Layne has been killing it throughout the awards season, so I actually had high hopes for her Oscar look. I was underwhelmed by this Versace though. I like that it’s not a total body-con column, but the fabric roll business at the back is just… a bad design trick.

Emilia Clarke presented the RBG song “I’ll Fight” performed by Jennifer Hudson. She was in a a striking lilac column gown by Balmain with lines of tiny sequins all over and an asymmetric neckline. This looked amazing on camera I love the way it folded and shimmered. When I see such intricate tiny work like this I wonder if it’s handmade or if the sequins are machined on. I always like seeing Emilia, she has such a great attitude and it shows.

Sarah Paulson was in a crazy pink Brandon Maxwell cinched sack gown with side cutouts. This is bad but it looked kind of interesting on screen, from the back, as it was drama. The back is open and the top was like a cape. It was definitely weird though.

Melissa McCarthy was also in Brandon Maxwell, in an expertly fitted black and white gown with a full on long cape. This wasn’t Melissa’s year to win an Oscar but she’ll get another shot at it.

Presenter Amandla Stenberg was in a flapper-like Miu Miu gown featuring tiny rows of sequin chains draped from the bodice and layers of fringe at the bottom. This was fun and I liked it on her.

91st Academy Awards

Was it just me or did Jennifer Lopez have a weird vibe at this year’s Oscars? In so many photos, she just looked rather glum and out of sorts. I got a certain feeling from her posing with Alex Rodriguez, something like… this is their last red carpet. I thought they would get married. I thought he would have proposed by now. Maybe that’s the problem – maybe Jennifer thought he would have proposed by now too. Anyway, it’s just a feeling I have, maybe I’m totally off-base. But if they breakup in the new few weeks or months, I will not be surprised.

Jennifer was the one celebrity dressed by Tom Ford at the Oscars – every year now, Tom Ford will only do one woman (he tends to dress multiple men though). This year J.Lo got to wear Tom Ford, and it looked like at least ten other gowns she’s worn before. The mirrored disco ball look has been done, and it’s been done by J. Lo many times. Snooze. (This is actually the silver version of the dress Amal Clooney wore to the Met Gala afterparties last year, btw.) Her makeup is tragique!

The Annual Academy Awards Arrivals

I was expecting Bradley Cooper & Irina Shayk to have a similarly glum vibe, but no. They seemed okay. Irina even seemed happy to be there with Bradley and his mom Gloria, who continues to be THE BEST. No shade: I personally think Bradley took a Quaalude or something to take the edge off and he was just sort of tranquil and having a nice time. He seemed really happy for Lady Gaga when she won, and their performance was easily one of the highlights of the evening. Irina’s dress is Burberry – it’s not great, but it’s far from offensive or bad. One thing though: Bradley’s hair plug situation is a MESS.

giseleheader

This is a special episode of Gossip With Celebitchy to give us time to cover the Oscars. It’s still fun! Chandra and I talk about Kim Kardashian’s plastic surgery and the fact that she claims not to have had a nose job. We reminisce about the time she got her butt x-rayed and we talk about her wonky implants. We mention shows like Botched and all the crazy plastic surgery procedures and injections people are getting. We also talk about celebrities who have had good work, like Sharon Stone and bad work, like Gisele. Then we get cracked up remembering Gisele in the burqa in Paris.

I include more of my talk with Kristy Puchko from Pajiba in which we bond over Christmas romance movies. (You may remember that she stanned for Serenity in episode 4.)The movies we both like include The Princess Switch (Kristy reviewed it here!) and A Christmas Prince. We both disliked the sequel to A Christmas Prince, The Christmas Prince: A Royal Wedding, and didn’t finish it. Kristy recommended that I watch The Spirit of Christmas, a crazy romcom in which a ghost becomes a real (hot hipster-looking) dude who falls in love with a career woman. I watched it and agree that it was fun.

I talk to my boyfriend Dave about A Star is Born. We recorded this right after we watched it and were perplexed that it was nominated for best picture. We made fun of Bradley Cooper mumbling through his lines and the fact that he seemed like a typical drunk redneck at a bar.

Chandra and I talk about The Favourite, which she loved and found so funny. We agree that all the acting nominations are deserved. I found it enjoyable, but a little too out there. Chandra liked how weird it was and thinks that’s what makes it a great movie. We also discussed Can You Ever Forgive Me, which we found delightful. I don’t think we had major spoilers in our talk, but we did discuss plot points that are clear from the trailers.

Jason Momoa, Lisa Bonet attends The 91st Annual Academy Awards Arrivals in Los Angeles

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet attended the Oscars together because he was a presenter. They wore his-and-hers Fendi, part of Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection with Fendi. That alone would make it memorable, but I genuinely loved that they MATCHED and both wore Millennial Pink. It felt like everyone on Twitter was talking about his scrunchie like it was a bad thing but I LOVED it. We actually got a promotional email about it – the scrunchie that Jason wore on his wrist was actually Fendi (for real) but Target wants you to know that they’re selling a version of the Jason Momoa pink scrunchie for $6.99. In Target stores now! Also: Lisa’s gown could have been so much better, right?

Queen Latifah in Mike Costello. I really like this? Pretty, conservative, flattering, totally appropriate for an Oscar presenter.

There were a lot of conversations coming into this year’s Oscars about how unmemorable last year’s acting winners were. It’s true for the most part, although I maintain that Allison Janney deserved her Oscar, and that she won her Oscar for decades of outstanding film and TV work. Allison returned this year as a presenter and she chose this simple Pamela Rolland gown. Classic, lovely.

It’s been hours and I’m still processing the fact that Green Book won Best Picture. I saw it in the theater, because I thought it would end up being a big Oscar contender. I was unhappy when it won the Golden Globe in January, and I thought that the conversations about the film’s white savior problems and patronizing portrayal of a jazz legend would ensure that Green Book wasn’t a contender. I thought that the fact that Peter Farrelly was snubbed for a Best Director nomination was a good sign. But then the night became a slow-motion trainwreck. The terrible script for Green Book won Original Screenplay. Then it won Best Picture and it felt like everyone in the room gasped. This is what happened right after:

Spike Lee was visibly angry when “Green Book” was announced as the winner of best picture at the Oscars, waving his arms in disgust and appearing to try to storm out of the Dolby Theatre before he was stopped at the doors. He returned to his seat when the speeches were over.

— Andrew Dalton (@andyjamesdalton) February 25, 2019

Spike has seen it before, and it’s happened before, when Driving Miss Daisy won best Picture and Do the Right Thing wasn’t even nominated. Decades later, and we’re still here. The Academy is still made up of old white people who are comforted by white savior films. They reward films in which white people conveniently and consistently “solve” racial issues. Here’s some of what Spike had to say backstage:

Oscars Still So White. Oscars Still Problematic. Oscars Still Love White Saviors. And good for Spike for being angry about it. Apparently, Chadwick Boseman was DONE about it too.

Angela Basset slayed in a fuschia Reem Acra gown with one giant puff of a shoulder. This dress reminds me somewhat of the Dior gown which Charlize Theron wore to the 2006 Oscars. I remember it because it was structurally bold, it had a giant bow on one shoulder, and because it was my first year covering the Oscars. This is a dress that might overwhelm another woman but Angela is definitely working it. I really like the gathering along the bustline and her hair and makeup are spot on. Look at her drop earrings and that phenomenal purse with the geometric patterned rhinestones! Plus she didn’t go matchy with the shoes. There were so many pink and rose-colored gowns last night.

Krysten Ritter came on stage to present and I was shocked to see that she’s pregnant! Outlets noticed on the red carpet earlier, and E! reported that she’s expecting with her partner, musician Adam Granduciel. They are cute together! I wonder if her pregnancy had anything to do with Jessica Jones ending, but given how Netflix is axing all the Marvel shows it could be a coincidence. She’s in Reem Acra also, in a lacy cranberry gown with bell sleeves. I wish the lace pattern wasn’t so large.

Danai Gurira wore Brock Collection, which I’m surprised I actually like. The idea of this, crinkled gold fabric with an empire waist, black belt and ruffle top, sounds like it would be fug but it’s a unique and modern dress. Plus she’s just gorgeous. I’m sad that Black Panther didn’t win Best Picture like it won for Ensemble at the SAGs, but at least it won for Best Costuming, for Best Production Design and Best Score. Production Designer Hannah Beachler gave one of the best and most heartfelt speeches of the night.

Speaking of Hannah Beachler, here she is looking amazing in a bright red dress with a giant side ruffle. That face jewelry is striking. Here’s a link to her speech and here’s a link to fashion designer Ruth Carter’s speech. (She also won at the Costume Designer’s Institute Awards!)

I really don’t understand Twitter sometimes.

I know a statement like that makes me sound too young, naïve, sheltered and privileged to be allowed chocolate milk, let alone unaccompanied access to one of the internet’s most reliable joke factories that sometimes doubles as a dumpster fire.
