It’s supposed to be a football game but, obviously, it’s also become a three hour competition between companies trying to put out the best ads featuring horses, dogs, other animals, and, of course, celebrities. Following the detailed reporting around the brutal (and seemingly targeted) hate crime against Jussie Smollett, many celebrities posted messages of support and love to Jussie. A member of their acting community had been targeted in a racist and homophobic hate crime. It was awful, and most celebrities were simply offering support and well-wishes to Jussie with no real agenda. Enter Kevin Hart, who stepped down from hosting the Oscars in December because social media users brought up his old tweets and old jokes from his act. The “jokes” and tweets showed Kevin’s strain of homophobia, stuff about how he would beat up his son if he was gay, etc. Hart posted the same kind of “sending prayers to Jussie” message as everybody else. And he got dragged for it.

Let me just say right here… I think Hart still deserved to be dragged. People were dragging him before he even posted the first message, because it’s about more than Kevin Hart. It’s about the culture of homophobia, and how even though our society becomes more and more LGBTQ+ friendly with each passing year, there are still so many hate crimes against that marginalized community, not to mention the rise in racist hate crimes too. Simply saying “this is why those jokes were never funny, Kevin Hart” isn’t so much “dragging” as it is an attempt to educate and increase awareness about the issues. But… Kevin Hart made it all about him, because of course. He “responded to the backlash” by posting this (I’m including Ira Madison’s tweet because it led to Kevin’s response:

your funniest joke congrats https://t.co/N3JqxaSJMl

It’s like talking to a wall sometimes with Kevin Hart, right? The Oscar debacle showed me that – he can’t see past his own nose. He can’t get out of his own way. It could have been a moment for him to acknowledge that he was truly wrong in the past, to have a moment of self-awareness and acknowledge that publicly. “I’m sorry for contributing – however small, however large – to the toxicity of homophobia.” That’s all it would have taken. But I guess that’s too much.

Once upon a time, Ben Affleck was going to make a Batman movie. A lot of us assumed he took the Batman gig specifically because he would get to make a Batman movie. Then, as his run of movies as the caped crusader started rolling out and dividing audiences and each movie got worse than the last, he …

Ashley Graham covers the February issue of Elle Magazine to promote her brand, basically. Her brand is plus-sized modeling, reality show hosting, non-judgemental Christianity, podcasting and endorsements. She’s also got a leg in publishing and probably a million other things too. Ashley clearly wants to be the Next Oprah, only with her own vibe. And I don’t really hate it? Of all the women who try to become brands, Ashley’s pretty harmless. I like her, and I enjoyed this interview – you can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

On trying to be the Next Oprah: “I was hiking and listening to one of her podcasts. One of her producers was on, talking, and she was like, ‘If I had a dollar every time someone said, “I’ve got the next Oprah,” I’d be filthy rich.’ She was like, ‘Nobody’s gonna be Oprah, because Oprah cornered a market in her time…. Nobody was talking the way she was talking on TV.’ ” It was my aha moment. People have always put me in this box of Oprah, or Ellen, or whatever. I was like, I’m not gonna be Oprah. I’m gonna be Ashley.”

Getting Kim Kardashian to apologize for joking about anorexia: “I had to. I even talked to her beforehand. I’m not gonna just blindside people in my interview. I was like, ‘Kim, is it cool if we talk about the anorexic comment?’ She goes, ‘Oh yeah, let’s address it.’ Just like that. I let her say what she wanted to say. I’m not here to condemn; I’m just here to talk.”

She doesn’t want her podcast to become too gossipy: “I’m not a tabloid; I’m not trying to get the juicy gossip on something. I’m here to talk about what matters in the world. If you happen to have, like, five ex-boyfriends that are mad famous, okay, great. Do you want to talk about one of them? Okay! I don’t care.”

How she keeps her eight-year marriage fresh: “Just have sex! Have sex all the time. Even if you don’t feel like it, just have sex. I have found that if we haven’t had sex, we get snippy, and then if we are having sex, we’re all over each other. For us it’s like, ‘Oh, let’s have sex.’ And then we’re just right back in a great mood.”

She & her husband fast one day a week:
“When you fast and you pray, it’s bringing more sensitivity to hear from God. That’s exactly what we wanted; we were like, ‘Okay, we want more sensitivity to be able to hear from God in the big decisions that we’re making.’ We do it together because there’s a verse in the Bible that says, ‘Where two or more are gathered, He is in the midst.’ So as we do it together, it just makes it even stronger.”

She’s careful about sponcon: “If I’m not wearing it, if I’m not using it, if it’s not something that’s part of my daily routine, then I don’t want to sell it.”

She’s not planning on kids right now: “For me, being a wife and being a woman, happiness doesn’t equate to having kids. Kids will come when they come. Happiness, right now, is building with my husband and building my business.”

[From Elle]

As I said, I believe she’s harmless – she’s not a Goop or a clueless white feminist, she’s just sort of loud and TMI and fun. She’s right about Oprah too – Oprah captured lightning in a bottle, and there probably won’t ever be another Oprah. What’s weird is that too few women are actually trying to be the next Oprah – many of these celebrity women are trying to be the next Martha Stewart, or the next Goop, or the next Blake Lively. As for having sex all the time, like it’s cure-all for any problem… that sounds so boring, but whatever, it’s her life. Ashley is 31 years old, and I don’t blame her at all for focusing on her career/brand right now and putting off having kids.

A post shared by Justin Timberlake (@justintimberlake) on Jan 30, 2019 at 3:47pm PST

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel had a “date night” last night to celebrate Justin’s 38th birthday. They were in New York, so they had a car and driver and both were in the backseat. That’s when Jessica promptly fell asleep, and Justin posted this Instagram video (see above). Let’s analyze it! FOR FUN. First of all, I don’t even believe that Jessica was asleep. Her performance was unconvincing, because… I mean, she’s not the best actress? That’s one theory I have, that they wanted to do something cute and so she pretended to be asleep.

My other theory is that perhaps she did nod off for a second and that it’s rude as hell to wake her up. Wake her up when you get to the place you’re going, but not before. If she’s so tired that she falls asleep upright in a car, in that position, then chica is exhausted and needs a disco nap.

As for the “wifey” label… it’s a sign of how far they’ve come, truly. I remember a time when Justin wouldn’t even show Jessica’s face on his Instagram, and now he’s posting videos of her fake sleeping and calling her “wifey.” You know my peeve? I hate it when men call their wives of baby-mothers “mama” on social media. That bugs me. I know some men do that for the kids, so the babies will say mama and daddy, but I hate it when a man calls his partner “mama” in the public sphere. Wifey bugs too.

Ant-Man and The Wasp film premiere Arrivals

One of the biggest industry stories last year was Marvel/Disney firing James Gunn, the writer/director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. GOTG was/is a wildly popular and lucrative franchise, and it wasn’t like James Gunn screwed up the franchise at all. No, Gunn was fired after MRA dirtbags dug up dozens/hundreds of Gunn’s old tweets from 2008-2012 in which he made a lot of really gross and inappropriate jokes about rape and pedophilia. I covered it thoroughly at the time, and I came down on the side of “James Gunn deserved to be fired, even if his firing was a direct result of MAGA Deplorables waging a campaign against him.” Two wrongs, etc.

That happened about seven months ago, and a lot of people involved with the Marvel films totally caped for Gunn and argued that it was all in the past and he shouldn’t be punished for it, etc. Disney held their ground, although I remember that there was some talk about how Marvel executives were mad about how high-handed Disney was being. It’s clear though – Disney wants no part of James Gunn’s future career. And so he went to Warner Bros. He’s directing the second Suicide Squad film?

James Gunn is returning to the director’s chair. Gunn, who was fired from helming the third installment in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is in negotiations to direct the second Suicide Squad film, the follow-up to the Warner Bros. 2016 hit that featured DC Comics anti-heroes as the leads. The move is not entirely unexpected as Gunn was already writing the script for the sequel, which Warner Bros. just slotted for a August 2021 release.

The dealmaking does, however, solidify that the new Suicide Squad film will be his next directorial effort. Disney fired Gunn from his Marvel franchise in July after old tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he made insensitive and controversial jokes.

The pic has the title of The Suicide Squad and is not being labeled a direct sequel but as a relaunch. The 2016 original movie featured the characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter prison sentences. Sources say that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I eventually saw the first Suicide Squad movie and it was such a chopped-up trainwreck. You could really tell that they did a bunch of reshoots and they edited out so much of Jared Leto’s Joker, all in favor of giving Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn a bigger role. What I’m saying is that I couldn’t care less about the sequel, but I’m not the audience for it anyway. I’m also saying that for all the breast-beating about how James Gunn’s LIFE WAS DESTROYED by… facing consequences for being a disgusting pervert on social media, he still ended up with another big job. Remember, James Gunn is a white man. He only had to spend a few months with a “destroyed career/reputation” and then he was back.
