I keep forgetting that Adam Driver is in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. That’s why Driver covers the new issue of Interview Mag, he’s promoting Scorsese’s Jesuit-priest passion project, which also stars Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson. The trailer came out last week and I honestly couldn’t even work up the energy to watch it at the time. So let’s watch it together? Here goes.

Okay, so there you go. I’m sure people will “love” the film the same way they “loved” that DiCaprio bear-rape movie, which is to say that Silence will be called “important” and a “tour de force” and everyone who sees it will be really depressed but they’ll say that they like it and it deserves all the Oscars.

Anyway, back to Adam Driver and this Interview Mag cover story. I love the photos, but I love any photoshoot with a bathtub theme. The actual interview was conducted by Driver’s friend Noah Baumbach and quite honestly, half of the interview is just two friends talking endlessly about how they know each other and that party they once went too and it’s SO boring. Driver comes across as very Actor-y and slightly neurotic, but decent too. You can read the full piece here. Here’s the only interesting part:

DRIVER: I’m looking out my window … They’re always doing stuff for the holidays—Halloween’s a big one. Do they trick-or-treat in your building? One year, Joanne [Tucker, Driver’s wife] and I bought $100 worth of mini candies, thinking that all the kids in the neighborhood were going to come by—not thinking, obviously, that no one’s going to let f–king strangers up into our building. For some reason, we didn’t put that together. We had, like, four kids come by. [both laugh] This one princess took all the candies we had hand over fist. I actually f–king hate Halloween.

BAUMBACH: It must be cool to see all these kids dressed as Kylo Ren on Halloween.

DRIVER: Yeah. I was dropping my wife off outside our building and I saw this mom holding a lightsaber—like, my lightsaber—and scarily accurate. Like, life-size. And she was handling it like she’s handled it a million times. She was juggling four kids who were all running in different directions, and she had three different bags and this lightsaber. Suddenly, the things that are great about this job came into full focus.

[From Interview Magazine]

I imagine that’s one of the coolest parts of being cast in a film or franchise with costumes and stuff, whether it’s a comic-book movie or the Star Wars franchise or whatever. It must be such a trip to see kids dressed up in your costume, or playing with your lightsaber. Anyway… Adam Driver is so jolie-laide. There are moments when I think he’s the sexiest thing ever and other times when I’m like “NOPE.” These photos are hot though.

Throw away your Holiday Shopping List because THE GIFT you need to get everyone you know has just been announced. Brooklyn Beckham is releasing his first book of photography called what i see. Brooklyn, or as some of you know him “that hot soccer player’s kid,” is actually a professional photographer. He was hired by Burberry to shoot one of their fragrance campaigns. I’ll leave it to you to speculate how he got that job.

The book’s description is as follows:

WHAT I SEE, the first book by Brooklyn Beckham, is a series of snapshots of his life. Each chapter tells a different story through pictures by and of Brooklyn, accompanied by captions and passages of text in his own words. Unique, authentic and stylish, WHAT I SEE is a glimpse behind the lens.

I love that description. You know some poor copywriter spent a week trying to come up with three sentences to describe this effort. I can only imagine the cover shot inspired the “glimpse behind the lens” bit. Let’s remember that Brooklyn is 17. How many chapters does a 17-year old need to tell his story? I wouldn’t count on using this thing as a paperweight. His author page consists of only two lines with three pieces of information – his age, that he lives in London and that photography is his biggest passion. That’s all you need to land a book, folks – passion. Okay, passion and parents named Victoria and David Beckham.

Alas, we must all wait for Brooklyn’s stylish authenticity until next year. You can preorder it though! You can even get a signed copy here. Just think how excited your Nan will be when she opens a card announcing that she only has to wait five months before her Brooklyn Beckham book arrives. I imagine after taking a moment to compose herself, she’ll look up and ask, “Who?” Even though there are no hints about whether it will contain pictures of his famous family and ex, Chloë Moretz, I, for one, can’t wait. After reading reviews for his Burberry ad campaign like, “To call his photographs a bit tame is like saying a hamster is not a very fearsome animal,” I can only imagine how mesmerizing this masterpiece will be. And add passages of his own words to that? It not just what Brooklyn sees, it’s what Brooklyn says.

Don’t take my enthusiasm for it, let some of the artistically nuanced art Brooklyn has posted on his Instagram speak for itself:

Do YOU SEE? Do you see WHAT I SEE? Oh curse you May 2017! Why must you keep me in the dark for so long? Oh dear, that just reminds of more of Brooklyn’s genius:

What does it take to make magic cool? (David Blaine has been asking this question for years.) Is it daring, Houdini-esque escapes, or sleight of hand card tricks, or elaborate illusions? Or would it be cool if every trick—sorry, illusion—ended with Criss Angel burning down a Hot Topic? Two Now Yo…

The Critics Choice Awards are, I believe, somewhere between the People’s Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. While everything is basically a popularity contest, it’s a matter of degrees and the Critics Choice – formerly the Broadcast Film Critics Awards – are basically “consensus popularity” choices. They’ve even broadened their categories so that they nominate even more movie stars. So… yeah, it is what it is. The Critics Choice Awards nominations came out this morning, and I’m not feeling particularly excited. They managed to nominate just about everybody though, so that’s something. Here are the big categories, and you can see the full list here.

BEST PICTURE
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
La La Land

BEST ACTRESS

Annette Bening – 20th Century Women

Emma Stone – La La Land

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis – Fences
Greta Gerwig – 20th Century Women
Naomie Harris – Moonlight
Nicole Kidman – Lion
Janelle Monáe – Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea

I believe that the lead actor and actress categories are going to look pretty much the same this entire awards season. The actress race seems centered now on Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Amy Adams. I’m hoping Ruth Negga gets nominated across the board, and Isabelle Huppert is the “older actress/lifetime achievement” nomination that we get most years. The supporting categories are interesting though, and I do think we’ll be seeing some movement here and there. Like, Michelle Williams will definitely get lots of nominations (she’s already campaigning heavily), and I think Nicole Kidman really wants to get recognized for Lion. Everyone says Viola Davis is a shoo-in, so we’ll see. I think it would be great if Naomie Harris had a quiet and effective Oscar campaign too.

And hey, at least there are some diverse nominees this year. Dev Patel, Naomie, Viola, Denzel, Janelle, Ruth Negga and Mahershala Ali!!! YAY.

Here’s a brief timeline of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s respective splits. Lopez broke up with boy toy Casper Smart in August, (and he hung around for a while because he didn’t want to give up the lifestyle but eventually left her mansion after she cut him off financially). Then in October we heard that Lopez and her last ex husband, Marc Anthony, were making an album together. The two performed together at the Latin Grammy Awards a couple of weeks ago and were affectionate on stage, right after which we heard that Marc had split with his model wife of two years, Shannon De Lima. So cue the inevitable stories that Marc wants Jennifer back. This is being run in US, which usually has a publicist’s blessing. This begs the question – did Jennifer or Marc sanction this?

The Latin singer is “still in love” with Lopez, 47, a source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly, and he “is trying to get back together with her.”

Though sources tell Us that Anthony’s marriage to De Lima, 28, had long been troubled, the insider says “as soon as he heard Jennifer split with Casper, he wanted out…”

The parents of 8-year-old twins Max and Emme are currently collaborating on Lopez’s untitled Spanish-language album, which Anthony is producing. The duo “have magic when they sing together,” says the pal. “That’s how they came together last time. There is just this chemistry between them.”

That chemistry was evident at the Latin Grammys. The former spouses sang a Spanish duet of “Olvídame y Pega la Vuelta,” which will be on their upcoming album. After their performance, the star of the Las Vegas residency “All I Have” presented Anthony with the Person of the Year award, and as the crowd chanted “beso” — meaning “kiss” in Spanish — they locked lips. In her speech, Lopez said: “Marc is a living legend. He is a magical and pure artist giving away classics that will stay forever. He will always be many things in my life.”

If he has his way, Anthony’s new role would be her lover. And though a Lopez source insists the “Ain’t Your Mama” singer is “happily single” and has “no plans” to rekindle the romance with her ex-husband, the source concedes, “She did make beautiful music with Marc!”

Jennifer opened up a couple of years ago about being in a controlling relationship. She didn’t name names but was widely believed that she was referring to Marc. Those kind of relationships can be addictive, and many people equate jealousy and control with love and concern. Jennifer is the kind of person who can’t stand to be alone though so I can see her romanticizing her past with Marc and forgetting about the bad times. I hope that US’s source is right and that she won’t take him back. It’s better to be single and in control than “in love” and walking on eggshells hoping to please a controlling partner. I may be wrong about Marc, but that’s the impression I get.

Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Jennie Garth stepped out with daughter Fiona, 10, on Monday (November 28).

The actress, 44, and her youngest daughter stopped for an ice cream and iced drink while running errands in Los Angeles, Calif.

Earlier this year, we spotted the mother-daughter duo, along with Jennie’s 19-year-old daughter Luca – out and about in L.A.

The actress co-parents her three daughters – including nearly 14-year-old Lola – with ex-husband, Twilight star Peter Facinelli.

The mom-of-three remarried Dave Abrams in July 2015.

She recently Instagrammed an image with former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Tori Spelling.

“Snoopy was flirting with us!” Jennie captioned the festive photo.

It’s looking more and more like this year’s Best Actress race will come down to Emma Stone in La La Land and Natalie Portman in Jackie. As much as I want to believe that Amy Adams is going to be a contender for Arrival or maybe Nocturnal Animals, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Meaning, I think Amy might get nominated for some stuff, but Emma and Natalie are going to get nominated for everything, and they’ll probably win everything. Natalie covers the latest issue of New York Magazine to promote Jackie. It’s a decent piece – she doesn’t come across as smug, or anti-America or anti-France. She even jokes about feeling at home wherever there’s a mall, so give her the Oscar please. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

She related to Jackie Kennedy’s pre-marriage years in Europe: “It’s thinking back to when you’re a young person, remembering that essential self. That time in Europe totally affected the way she was as a First Lady.”

Jackie was a branding genius: “She was very ahead of her time in having the kind of agency to tell her own story. That’s everyone’s obsession now, presenting this image that they want to show the world. That was relatively forward-thinking of her, and the fact that she coined ‘Camelot’ is crazy.”

Jackie’s weird accent: “It’s not an accent that anyone else has. It’s this mix of mid-Atlantic faux-British that must have been from finishing school and a real kind of Long Island ‘tawk.’ Half of it is people I grew up with, and half is like Katharine Hepburn. But it was great to have it, because it felt like a diagram of her past.”

Understanding the iconography of the state funeral: “Your mourning period is also an identity crisis, is also a crisis of faith, is also a moment when you have to leave your home. And it’s also a moment when even as a member of the nation, not as a private person, everyone was just scared out of their minds.”

What she learned from the disastrous production of ‘Jane Got a Gun’: “I am not a producer. This is not my talent in life.”

She doesn’t know why she has a reputation for being cold: “I actually find that I’m kind of mushy,” and to be a producer, “you have to be very steady and even-keeled about very stressful situations.” The same goes for acting. “Some people open up in the chaos,” she says. “And me, when I’m in a bad situation, I shut down.”

She went trick-or-treating in Pasadena: “It feels like ’50s suburbia. I feel so suburban. Malls are comforting to me — anywhere there’s a mall, I feel like, This is home.”

What her parents taught her: “It was something they instilled in me, that [acting] was not the biggest, best thing to aspire to, or certainly not the center of the world. I think it makes the low points, like when you mess up or get horrible reviews — it just kind of takes all the weight out of it. It’s just a movie.”

She’s nostalgic for a time when actresses had great roles: Films from the ’50s and ’60s “have such strong female roles all the time,” she says, citing Sunset Boulevard and Marnie. “Even if they’ll make the occasional sexist comment, they still have a central woman character who has a personality … Now I feel like movies are all about white men and then you get a couple that happen to be about women.”

[From NY Magazine]

The interview took place just before the election, and Portman was talking excitedly about her hopes for a Hillary Clinton presidency. NY Mag followed up with Portman after the election and she emailed back that she is “very upset about the results” but “extremely energized to get more involved.” As for the rest of it… I think she learned a lot while she and Benjamin lived in Paris. I think she mostly realized that she wanted to move back to America. Perhaps because we have more comforting malls full of nice Americans?
