Punky and her Brewsters!

Soleil Moon Frye posted a photo with her four children – daughters Poet, 11, and Jagger, 8, and sons Lyric, 2, and Story, 4 months – via Instagram Wednesday.

“My four babies with me all in one shot. Love my little ones with all of my heart. L’Shana Tova,” the Punky Brewster star, 40, captioned the image.

The actress and her producer husband Jason Goldberg welcomed their fourth child on May 16.

“Everybody thinks we’re insane!” she said of their big brood.

“When I was a little girl, I used to tell my mom I wanted 100 kids,” she added. “Then as an adult, I thought that our family was so big with three. Then we have this amazing, incredible surprise with four, and I’m just so thrilled and excited and literally cannot believe it.”

Katya! Claire says you just “KILLLLLLLLLED” your GRE for grad school – congratulations! She also says that no matter what you do or where you end up, you will do amazing things. And she hopes you find yourself in Minnesota at some point as she misses her “mimosa girl”. By request, the Sopranos.

Elle Magazine has about a million different cover subjects for their November “Women In Hollywood” issue. Every year, the different cover subjects multiply! And Kristen Stewart is one of those cover subjects. I actually like her cover the best, maybe? You can see the whole Elle “Women In Hollywood” package here. Elle’s only released one quote from Kristen:

Kristen on her love life: “I’m not ashamed, and I’m not confused. Things have changed. And not just with me—we’re really allowed to encourage this new acceptance to develop and be awesome.”

[From Elle]

As I’ve said before, I like that Kristen is all “Google me, I’m not hiding” about her sexuality. I like the way she’s been verbally and visually framing her relationships with women, and I do think she’s done great work in destigmatizing the reality of bisexuality to a larger audience. Now, all that being said, I still think the way she jumps from relationship to relationship is kind of shady, and I feel sorry for Alicia Cargile because I think Kristen just uses Alicia as the placeholder girlfriend in between bigger, crazier relationships.

Incidentally, Us Weekly and other outlets are now confirming that K-Stew and St. Vincent are loved up. They’ve apparently been inseparable during Kristen’s time in New York. Now I really do feel sorry for Alicia Cargile.

What else? Kristen did a Q&A session at the New York Film Festival where she revealed that she’s just as much of a stalker as everybody else:

“Much cooler, productive rad things could be happening. I know I sound ridiculous and really obvious; everyone says this, and I sound like an older person, but we could be doing way cooler s***. It’s so time-consuming…We stalk each other. I stalk people, I get stalked, we all get stalked.”

[From Movie Pilot]

I think she’s talking about social media and the nature of our celebrity-obsessed culture. And she’s not wrong.

Intro for October 13, 2016

Dear Gossips,

I was once in a meeting with an executive who made Asian jokes to my face, expecting me to laugh. And, instead of standing up for myself and doing what was honourable, I sat there and took it. Because I didn’t want to risk losing my job. Afterwards – and still now – I felt asham…

bendy EW

First: Benedict Cumberbatch is on the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly. It’s a preview of Doctor Strange, obviously, which comes out the weekend before Election Day here in the US. Will people actually leave their homes to see Benedict Strange perform magic tricks, or will we all be glued to our TVs in the final stretch of what is likely the worst, most depressing, most offensive campaign in modern American politics? I don’t know. I suspect that the true-blue Marvel fan-boys and fan-girls will see the film on opening weekend. Everybody else? They might wait a few weeks.

What does EW say? Not much right now. They released one quote from Bendy: “It’s a peculiar one — Strange by name, strange by name.” As in, prepare yourselves for a really weird story. Rachel McAdams is probably going to turn into Night Nurse, which I’m sure means something. Benedict also recently said that he thought he was going to have to turn down Marvel’s offer to play Strange because of his schedule, but Kevin Feige was so hellbent on having Cumberbatch that they completely changed the production schedule to make it work for Bendy.

Benedict and Tilda Swinton were also in Hong Kong earlier today for their first promotional stop for the film. Benedict has gotten a rather drastic haircut and I HATE IT. I’m not saying he should always have his Cumbercurls flowing in the breeze, but his face doesn’t really work with short hair. You can see some additional photos here of Benedict and Tilda Swinton. Just one thing: I really need the Daily Mail to stop referring to any Asian country or city as “the Orient.” We’re not living in an Agatha Christie novel. There’s no need.

leashape

If there’s one thing you can say about Lea Michele, she’s not fake humble nor does seem unaware of her own personality. She knows who she is, she has a high opinion of herself and she’ll tell you about it. She’ll also tell you that you can do it too, and there are no excuses. (My words, but she pretty much said that.) There’s something no-nonsense about Lea which I admire, but I can only take her in small doses. Lea covers the November issue of Shape, where she talks about setting goals, meeting goals, and loving herself and her body. These seem to be her favorite topics.

On how facing criticism has made her stronger:
“I was raised to be confident. But confidence also comes from getting knocked down. When you go through something tough, you come out of it a stronger person. We live in a social media-driven world, where people say whatever they want, and if you’re going to engage with them, you have to be confident. Everybody is always going to have an opinion, and they’re entitled to that. You just have to know who you are and what you believe in.”

On why the scale doesn’t determine her self-worth:
“As I get older, my body is always changing. Right now I have so much energy, my skin looks good, and my butt is higher than it’s ever been. I’ve been skinnier and I’ve been a little bit bigger, and I’m never hard on myself one way or the other. The fact that I’m active, eating well, and taking care of myself is all that matters—not a number.”

On why she loves her shape:
“I love my shape because it’s unique to me. I’m 5’2”, and I get a lot of compliments on my legs, which is funny for a short girl. But they’re one of my favorite things about my body.”

On how putting in the work pays off:
“I constantly set goals for myself, and then I achieve them. I’m not someone who says they’re going to do something and then doesn’t. Follow-through is a huge thing for me. It’s something I look for in friendships and relationships. I pride myself on achieving goals and constantly growing and getting stronger. It’s about not becoming stagnant or letting anything hold me back.”

On learning to listen to her body:
“If I have one of those days when I don’t want to work out, I ask myself why. I’ve learned how to listen to my body and know what I need in that moment. And I’m grateful for that. It took me a very long time to get to this place. Now I can tell when my body is saying to take a break from working out, or when it’s saying, No, you’re being a little lazy, so that I can push myself to get going.”

On enjoying what she eats:
“I was vegan for a while, I was vegetarian for 10 years, and now I’ve incorporated meat back into my diet. I eat as healthy as possible because I know food fuels me. I usually start my day with avocado toast or a green smoothie. I love a big salad for lunch; I’m always concocting recipes like kale Caesar or spinach artichoke salad. For dinner I’m flexible. If I’m going out and I want a bowl of pasta, I’ll eat it. I’m not hard on myself.”

[From Shape]

Lea isn’t apologizing or trying to take up less space, she’s got a very healthy, if inflated, sense of self. She’s not wrong, you do have to believe in yourself, set goals and give yourself credit for it. I just don’t see her as a person who has much awareness of anyone else’s viewpoints or struggles. I did relate to what she said about how she looks for friends who follow through. I don’t think my friends have to be type A or anything but they do have to show up when they say they will and be capable of making plans ahead of time. It’s really difficult for me to be friends with people who flake out on plans. Sometimes I wonder how those type of people get through life.

I don’t think I’ve ever had the opportunity to gush about how much I love Marlee Matlin. Seriously, I LOVE HER. So much. She’s a wonderful actress, a passionate activist and she just seems like a lovely person. Well, apparently Marlee appeared on one season of Celebrity Apprentice. And Donald Trump kept hitting on her. Or as Donald Trump would say, he moved in on her like a bitch. While we’re still waiting for Mark Burnett to release a supercut of all of the misogynistic, racist and terrible things Trump said on-camera during The Apprentice, it seems like some of the cast members of Celebrity Apprentice are coming forward with their own stories of Trump’s deplorableness.

Donald Trump is facing a set of negative allegations regarding his treatment of female contestants on Celebrity Apprentice, according to a new report. Former contestant Richard Hatch recently spoke to People, claiming the Republican presidential nominee made sexual comments toward Lisa Rinna and Marlee Matlin while filming season 11 of the reality competition series in 2011.

“Watching him in the boardroom making sexual comments to Marlee Matlin, to all of the women on the Apprentice, it was obvious that that’s just a part of who he is,” Hatch recalled to the magazine. “It was obvious and it was grotesque. It was blatant and it was frequent. He did it with Lisa Rinna; He did it with Marlee Matlin. He did it with whomever happened to be there at the time. He went back and forth with Marlee. No matter how she responded, no matter how politely, he would push it a step further with comments about her looks, and how she was making him feel, and about what he thought of her, and how happy he would be to do something sexual with her. It was a lot of innuendo, far beyond the norm. It was odd and weird, and people in the boardroom would look at one another, but he didn’t care. [Matlin] was with her interpreter, Jack, and I thought, ‘Gosh, I wonder if he’s comfortable with this?’”

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign dismissed the allegations, telling the mag, “Marlee Matlin is such a nice person, and Mr. Trump has great respect for her, but this report is completely false. Just take a look at Richard Hatch’s record, or lack thereof.”
Additionally, Hatch said he found issue in Trump displaying such behavior while daughter Ivanka Trump was in the same room.

“He did it in front of Ivanka,” he said. “That was not just uncomfortable for me. It was weird… He didn’t care that she was there; he didn’t seem afraid that she would hold him accountable or say anything about his boorish behavior. None of that happened. He was just that way, and it didn’t matter to him one bit that his daughter was listening in.”

[From E! News]

That’s so gross. I mean, every story we hear about Trump is disgusting, but just imagine how uncomfortable Marlee felt. It wasn’t a one-on-one situation, she was in front of other contestants, she had her interpreter there, the cameras were there. And to be subjected to that kind of sh-t, to have to watch her interpreter sign all of that disgusting sh-t… ugh. Also: Marlee has been married to her husband, Kevin Grandalski, since 1993. They have four children together. But we already knew that Donald Trump likes to take married women furniture shopping so he can move in on them like a bitch and grab them by the p-ssy. Think about how disgusting that is.

I thought this was going to be an utterly garbage day, but it seems like there is one really nice piece of news. I was so scared when I saw that “Bob Dylan” was trending on Twitter, and I said a little prayer of “please don’t let him die, please don’t let him die” before I clicked. As it turns out, he was trending for the best reason: Bob Dylan has won the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. Can you believe that??? Isn’t that amazing?

Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday. The music legend was cited for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

Dylan wrote some of the most influential songs of the 1960s. He will receive a prize of $927,740.

[From NBC News]

While it’s unusual – perhaps unprecedented? – for a songwriter to win the Nobel for Literature, think of it this way: he’s a poet. Perhaps he is one of the most famous and beloved American poets in history, right up there with Walt Whitman. Let’s spend the day listening to Bob Dylan recite and sing his best poetry!

Nicki Minaj covers the November issue of Marie Claire. I’ve become something of a Nicki Minaj fan over the past few years especially, and let me just say: she’s a lot prettier than this cover shot. She’s at her prettiest when her hair is down and she’s wearing really minimal, natural-style makeup. I don’t know what this cover is trying to do, except maybe make her look like a sexy secretary? I do appreciate the fact that she’s sort of covered up on the cover though. Minaj is a bit like Sofia Vergara in that sense: her shtick is short, low-cut and body-con. It’s nice to see her in something different. As for the interview, it’s good.

On young women’s goals: “Nowadays, I feel like [young women] see marrying into money—I think that’s a big thing now. I don’t want that to be a woman’s goal in life. I want your goal in life to be to become an entrepreneur, a rich woman, a career-driven woman. You have to be able to know that you need no man on this planet at all, period, and he should feel that, because when a man feels that you need him, he acts differently.”

On competing with male rappers: “I don’t need to read a book about [business]. I can look at someone’s career and just pinpoint the dos and the don’ts, and the one person I’ve done that with for my entire career was Jay Z. He did such a great job being an authentic street guy and a businessman, and I was like, Why aren’t there women doing that, taking the success from rap and channeling it into their empire? I felt like anything he could do, I could do.”

On the double standard that exists for women of color in the media: “When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite. So it wasn’t trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it? It’s quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down.”

On the people living with violence in our country: “We tend to not remember the black women who are mourning these men and who are thinking, Oh, my God, what am I going to tell my child now about where his father is, and the struggle it is for black women to then move on after they lose their husband or their boyfriend … The strong women in these inner cities often go unnoticed … no one really ever puts a hand out to them.”

On collaborating with Beyoncé: “Every time Bey and I do something together, I see how women are inspired, and it has nothing to do with how we look. It has to do with how we are owning who we are and telling other women you should be the boss of your own career and the brains behind your life or your decisions or your art. I just love that feeling.”

[From Marie Claire]

I’m totally cool with Minaj modeling her career after Jay-Z’s career. If I was a rapper (???) I would want to be like Jay-Z too and I would actively model my career like Jay’s. I’m also totally fine with Minaj telling her younger fans – I imagine they would be teen girls? – to aim higher than being a rich man’s wife or girlfriend or mistress. That’s always a good message. Minaj is also right about the forgotten black women in our society, the mothers, daughters, sisters, girlfriends, wives and friends of the men who meet violent ends.

My one “eh, not really” moment with this interview? The example she uses for the double standards of how white women and black women are treated in the media. Like, she’s absolutely right that race plays a huge part in the narratives we’re fed about women, sexuality, nudity, respectability, consent and more. But is Kim Kardashian’s nude photo moment the best example of that double standard? I ask because Kim got a ton of sh-t for posting a semi-nude photo. She was criticized online and in print media, she was criticized by other celebrities and it became this absurd cultural-touchstone moment about feminism, body-confidence and more. That example is also absurd when you think about how many different examples of cultural appropriation from the Kardashian-Jenners that Minaj could have used instead!
